Apple Intelligence is built into supported iPhone features and can process requests on-device or through Apple’s Private Cloud Compute. The ChatGPT extension brings OpenAI’s service into selected Apple workflows; when you use it, your chosen request and any permitted attachments are sent to ChatGPT. Whether you’re signed in to a ChatGPT account changes the stated data handling.
Here’s what each option does, what the iPhone can send, and where to manage the integration. Features and controls vary by iPhone, iOS version, language, region, and ChatGPT service availability.

How Apple Intelligence and ChatGPT differ
Apple Intelligence is Apple’s suite of system-integrated features. Some tasks run on the iPhone; Apple says more complex requests can use Private Cloud Compute. ChatGPT is an OpenAI service. If you enable its extension, supported Apple features can pass selected requests to ChatGPT rather than handling every task solely with Apple’s models.

What ChatGPT can do inside iPhone features
Apple’s iPhone guide documents these integration points. Which ones appear depends on your device, software, language, and region.
- Siri: Siri can refer some questions to ChatGPT, including questions about photos and documents.
- Writing Tools: ChatGPT can help generate text or images from a description.
- Image Playground: ChatGPT can provide additional visual styles.
- Visual intelligence: You can ask ChatGPT about what the camera sees.
- Shortcuts: A model can be used in more complex requests.
Apple says connecting a paid ChatGPT account can provide access to paid capabilities more often. That does not mean every paid feature is available in every Apple workflow.
Which iPhones and software support it?
Apple’s iOS 27 iPhone guide lists Apple Intelligence support for iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPhone 16 models or later. Do not assume that eligibility list applies unchanged to earlier iOS releases; check the guide for your installed version and the Apple Intelligence settings on your iPhone.

Apple cautions that Apple Intelligence is not available in every language or region, usage limits may apply, and the ChatGPT extension is available only where the ChatGPT app and service are available. Apple recommends keeping iOS current for the latest features. The live requirements and your iPhone’s settings are the best checks for your particular configuration.
How to enable or disable ChatGPT on iPhone
In Apple’s iOS 27 guide, the path is Settings > Siri > ChatGPT. Earlier Apple guide versions and OpenAI setup instructions use Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri > ChatGPT. If the labels on your phone differ, look under Siri or Apple Intelligence & Siri for ChatGPT or Extensions.
- Open Settings, then go to Siri > ChatGPT or Apple Intelligence & Siri > ChatGPT, depending on your iOS version.
- Enable the ChatGPT extension. You can use it without signing in, or connect a free or paid ChatGPT account. Signing in is needed if you want requests saved to your ChatGPT chat history.
- Review Siri’s confirmation setting. By default, Siri asks before sending a request to ChatGPT. You can begin a request with “Ask ChatGPT,” or turn off the confirmation control if you want Siri to send requests without asking.
- To stop using the extension, switch it off in the same settings area. You can also turn off Setup Prompts to stop Siri from suggesting it.
Files still require your permission before they are sent, according to Apple and OpenAI. Turning off the extension prevents those ChatGPT handoffs through Apple’s integration; it does not remove or disable the standalone ChatGPT app or website.

What data does the iPhone send?
The answer depends on which processing path handles the task. Apple Intelligence processing and a request sent to ChatGPT are distinct, and ChatGPT’s stated handling also differs between signed-out and signed-in use.

Apple Intelligence on-device or through Private Cloud Compute
Apple says many Apple Intelligence tasks run entirely on-device. For more complex requests, Apple Intelligence can use Private Cloud Compute. Apple says that service processes data to fulfill a request, does not store it or make it accessible to Apple, and does not retain it after returning results. These are Apple’s descriptions of its system, not an independent audit of its architecture.
Using the ChatGPT extension without an account
Apple says the extension is off until you enable it and that you choose what to send. When you make a request, the request and attachments may go to ChatGPT along with limited context, such as your time zone, country, device type, language, and the feature in use. Apple says your IP address is obscured from ChatGPT, while general location is provided for fraud prevention and legal compliance.

For this unauthenticated Apple integration, Apple says OpenAI must process the data to fulfill the request and must not retain the request or response except where required by law, or use the request to improve or train its models. OpenAI describes the same signed-out integration as not providing it with your IP address, storing requests, or training on them.
Using the extension while signed in
When you connect an account, the account’s existing data preferences and OpenAI’s privacy policies apply, according to OpenAI; Apple likewise points to connected-account settings and OpenAI policies. OpenAI says interactions can be saved in your ChatGPT history. The no-account retention and training terms above should not be treated as a blanket promise for signed-in use.

OpenAI says conversations started through Apple can be continued in its apps or website. Once you continue there, OpenAI’s ordinary privacy policy applies.

Choosing whether to use the extension
The practical decision is whether ChatGPT’s capabilities are useful in a supported Apple workflow and whether you want those particular requests handled by OpenAI. You can leave the extension off, enable it without signing in, or connect an account; Siri’s confirmation prompt and file-permission checks provide additional control over what is sent.
Neither service is categorically “more private” based on these vendor descriptions alone. Apple Intelligence may use on-device processing or Private Cloud Compute; a ChatGPT handoff sends the selected request to OpenAI, with different stated handling depending on account status. Decide based on the workflow you want and the data path you are comfortable using.
