HomeKit Secure Video is a strong fit if you already use Apple Home and want camera footage analyzed at home and encrypted end to end in iCloud. It is not a universal camera standard: you need a camera that supports Secure Video specifically, an iCloud+ plan, and a compatible home hub. Google Nest and Ring offer different history options and app ecosystems, so compare the exact camera, plan, recording mode, and ongoing cost—not just the brand.
How HomeKit Secure Video works
HomeKit Secure Video (HKSV) is a recording feature for compatible cameras added to Apple Home. It is separate from basic HomeKit camera compatibility: a camera described as HomeKit-enabled does not necessarily support Secure Video.

Apple says the home hub analyzes camera video locally to determine whether it should be recorded to iCloud. Apple describes the process this way: “Recordings from security cameras that use HomeKit Secure Video are analyzed privately on your Apple devices at home and then sent securely to iCloud through end-to-end encryption.” The recordings do not count toward your iCloud storage quota. How many cameras and days of history does HomeKit Secure Video include?

How Google Nest and Ring compare
Google and Ring organize video history around their own subscriptions, camera models, and recording modes. Their figures are not directly interchangeable with Apple’s 10-day activity window: event history and continuous recording are different kinds of coverage.
Google Nest and Google Home Premium
As of October 1, 2025, Google-purchased Nest Aware (2nd gen) subscriptions are called Google Home Premium. Google’s Standard plan provides 30 days of event video history. Advanced provides 60 days of event history and 10 days of 24/7 video history for eligible cameras. Older subscriptions bought through partners may still use the Nest Aware name. Recording options depend on the exact camera and how it is powered. Some eligible battery cameras provide up to three hours of event video history without a subscription. Continuous history has restrictions: the Nest Cam (battery) must be connected to power for 24/7 history, while the battery Nest Doorbell does not offer 24/7 history even if installed with optional wiring. Ring
Ring’s subscription plans include video storage and other features, and its plan comparison lists 24/7 recording for eligible cameras. Availability depends on the camera, plan, and—in some cases—location. Apple’s accessory catalog includes Logitech Circle View as a HomeKit-enabled camera and describes Eve Outdoor Cam as designed for HomeKit Secure Video. Treat those listings as starting points, not a guarantee that every product revision or regional version has the same features.
