How to choose based on the devices you already use
Choose Apple Home if your home is already Apple-centered
Apple presents the Home app as a way to control compatible accessories across Apple devices. If your household uses iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, or HomePod regularly, Apple Home may be the more natural fit. A HomePod, HomePod mini, or Apple TV can serve as a home hub, which Apple says enables remote access and automations. See Apple’s Home app overview for its current product details.

Choose Google Home if your household is Android-first or mixed
Google’s Matter setup documentation supports Android and iPhone/iPad, so an iPhone is not by itself a reason you cannot use Google Home. Google also supports partner products through its Works with Google Home program. Check the Google Home Matter setup guide and Works with Google Home compatibility information for the current requirements and supported products.

What Matter does—and does not—make compatible
Matter is an interoperability standard: a compatible accessory may be set up and controlled by more than one certified smart-home app. Google says Matter-enabled devices can be controlled simultaneously in multiple certified apps, including Google Home and Apple Home. That does not mean every Matter product exposes the same functions in every app. Platforms may add support for a device category at different times, and an accessory’s implementation can affect the features available.
#1 Best Overall
- 【Easy Setup, One Control】With Matter, Skip the step of downloading and registering multiple manufacturers' apps every time you buy a new device. Instead, head straight to certified smart home platforms like Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home, SmartThings, or AiDot to control all your Matter devices.【TIP】Matter-certified hub or controller (HomePod, Echo Dot, Nest, SmartThings Hub) is required for Apple Home/Alexa/Google Home/SmartThings platforms. Alternatively, the AiDot app can be used without hub
- 【Offline-Ready Control】Once you've set up your Matter-certified devices on your LAN, they'll be able to communicate with each other directly, using the Matter protocol. This means that if your home internet connection goes offline, your Matter-certified devices will still be able to communicate and be controlled within your LAN, without relying on the internet or cloud services.
- 【Remote Control from Anywhere】Use the app to turn electronics on before you arrive home and off after you leave, no matter where you are. Using the smart plug that work with alexa manage your power usage and save money.
- 【Hands-free Voice Control】Control linkind homekit plug using simple voice commands through Apple HomeKit, Siri, Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and SmartThings, without the need for physical input such as buttons or switches.
- 【Flexible Scheduling & Timer】Effortlessly reduce energy usage with automatic device shutdown after a set time. For example Chrismas Tree, TV, Lamp, Fan, Humidifier,Blenders, Lightbulbs
Before buying, verify the exact model in the platform’s current compatibility information. Check both that the category is supported and that the specific functions you want—such as the controls or automations you expect—are available in that app. Apple’s Home app information describes Matter support and supported accessory categories; Google’s Matter compatibility guide and Works with Google Home page provide Google’s current compatibility references.
When you need a hub, and what to check on your network
Apple Home hubs
Apple identifies HomePod, HomePod mini, and Apple TV as devices that can be set up as home hubs. Apple says a home hub provides remote access and enables automations. Confirm the current requirements for the particular accessory and the Apple hub model you own in Apple’s Home app documentation.

Google Home Matter hubs
Google requires a Matter-enabled hub to add Matter devices, control them locally, and control them remotely when you are away. Supported hub types listed in Google’s guidance include speakers, displays, Wi-Fi routers, and streamers. Thread accessories require a hub with a built-in Thread border router; a hub that supports Wi-Fi Matter devices is not automatically suitable for a Thread accessory.
Google Matter setup requirements
Google’s setup guide lists a Google Account, home Wi-Fi with IPv6 enabled, a Matter-enabled hub, a compatible mobile device, Bluetooth Low Energy for pairing, and a current Google Home app. A Thread accessory additionally requires a Thread border router. The page accessed for this comparison lists Android 8.1 or later and iOS/iPadOS 16.5 or later, but consult the current setup guide for updated requirements.

Privacy and local control: compare the claims carefully
Apple says Home accessories are controlled by Apple devices rather than the cloud and that communication is end-to-end encrypted. That is Apple’s description of its Home app approach, not an independent comparative security audit. Its privacy statement is available on Apple’s Home app page.
Google says Matter commands can travel locally over the home network without going through Google’s or the manufacturer’s cloud. It contrasts this with some non-Matter Works with Google Home integrations, where commands may pass through Nest cloud services and a partner’s cloud. These descriptions apply to different integration paths, so consider which specific accessories and services you plan to use and review their current privacy terms. Google explains the distinction in its Matter information.

A practical decision checklist
- Start with your household’s devices. If Apple devices are already central, evaluate Apple Home first; if the household is Android-first or mixed, evaluate Google Home first.
- List the accessories and functions you need. Check each exact model and the features you intend to use in the target app, rather than relying on the Matter logo alone.
- Check hub availability. For Apple, see whether you have a supported Home hub for remote access and automations. For Google Matter, confirm a compatible Matter hub; for Thread, confirm built-in Thread border-router support.
- Check the network and setup prerequisites. For Google Matter, verify IPv6, Bluetooth Low Energy pairing support, the current app and mobile requirements, and the correct Wi-Fi or Thread path.
- Decide how much you value local control and review the actual integrations. Matter and non-Matter partner integrations can use different command paths, and vendor privacy descriptions are not independent audits.
