Short answer: Choose Apple Home if your household is already built around iPhone, Apple Watch, Mac, Siri, HomePod, or Apple TV; choose Google Home if you already use Google Home devices and Google’s assistant ecosystem. Matter can let some accessories work across both platforms, but it does not guarantee identical features or controls.
One important naming clarification: Apple’s documented smart-home experience is Apple Home, not a currently established, shipping platform called “homeOS.” Apple’s published materials describe Apple Home, HomeKit, Matter, and Apple home hubs; they do not establish homeOS as a product you can buy or use today.

Start with the phones and devices your household already uses
Apple Home is controlled through the Home app on Apple devices. Apple identifies HomePod, HomePod mini, and Apple TV as devices that can be set up as a home hub, supporting away-from-home access and automations. See Apple’s Home app overview.
Google Home is the more natural starting point when your household already uses Google Home devices and Google’s assistant ecosystem. In either case, the platform choice affects more than the app: check the accessories you want, the hub or network equipment they require, and the controls and automations you expect to use.

Compare the setup requirements that can change your decision
| What to check | Apple Home | Google Home |
|---|---|---|
| Platform fit | Home app and Apple devices; Apple lists HomePod, HomePod mini, and Apple TV as possible home hubs. | Google Home devices and Google’s assistant ecosystem; exact accessory and assistant support varies by device and availability. |
| Matter support | Apple says iOS 16.1 and later supports Matter. Accessories can be added through Home or a HomeKit-based app. | A Matter-enabled hub is required for setup, local control, and remote control. Hub connectivity must match the accessory. |
| Network considerations | Check the accessory’s specific connectivity and Apple Home feature support before buying; Apple’s developer guidance does not replace a model-specific compatibility check. | Google says IPv6 must be enabled for Matter to work properly. Thread accessories need a Thread-capable border router; pairing requires Bluetooth Low Energy 4.2 or higher. |
| Phone prerequisites stated in support materials | Apple’s Matter documentation identifies iOS 16.1 and later as supported. | Google’s setup page lists Android 8.1 or later with the specified Google Play services version, or iOS 16.5 or later, plus a current Google Home app. |
| Voice-assistant availability | Siri is part of Apple’s ecosystem; the cited Apple sources do not establish a comparable regional rollout schedule. | Google says Gemini for Home voice assistant is rolling out in early access, so availability depends on rollout and supported devices. |
Google’s listed setup requirements come from its current instructions and can change. Check Google’s Matter setup instructions before configuring a device.
Understand what Matter does—and what it does not promise
Matter is intended to help supported smart-home accessories work with more than one compatible ecosystem. Google says Matter-enabled devices can be controlled simultaneously in multiple Matter-certified apps, including Google Home and Apple Home. That can reduce platform lock-in for supported device types, but it is not a guarantee that every accessory works in every app or exposes the same functions.

Google notes that platforms add support for Matter device categories at different times. A Matter label alone therefore does not establish that a particular model’s advanced controls, automations, or vendor-specific features will appear in both Apple Home and Google Home. Before buying, verify the exact model’s current compatibility and feature list for each app you intend to use. Apple’s developer guidance explains interoperability, but it is not a buyer-facing catalog of every supported accessory: Apple Matter accessory interoperability guidance.

When Thread matters
Thread is a low-power mesh networking technology used by some smart-home accessories. For a Thread accessory, the platform needs suitable Thread border-router capability; a Wi-Fi-only hub is not enough. Google describes Thread devices as communicating through the home network and cites mesh coverage and routing resilience as benefits. Those are Google’s descriptions, not an independent comparison test.

Choose a hub based on the control you need
For Apple Home
Apple says HomePod, HomePod mini, or Apple TV can be configured as a home hub for remote access and automations. Apple also describes these devices as building blocks for its Matter experience. Check the current requirements for your intended accessories and automations rather than assuming a hub is needed for every basic control scenario.
For Google Home
Google requires a Matter-enabled hub for Matter setup, local control, and control while away. Its support page lists devices with Matter over Wi-Fi and Thread support, including Google Home Speaker (2026), Nest Hub (2nd generation), Nest Hub Max, Nest Wifi Pro, and Google TV Streamer (4K). The list is a changing compatibility detail: confirm the live Google Matter hub and setup information and whether the specific hub supports the accessory’s connection type.

- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
Account for assistant features and rollout timing
Google announced Gemini for Home on October 1, 2025, describing changes to smart displays, speakers, the Google Home app, and camera-related products. Its compatibility page describes the Gemini for Home voice assistant as rolling out in early access, not as universally available. Check Google’s current compatible-device information for the products and features supported where you live.

Use this buying checklist before you commit
- List the accessories you plan to use. Check each exact model’s current compatibility with Apple Home or Google Home, including the specific features you need—not just whether the box says Matter.
- Check connectivity and hub needs. Identify whether each device uses Wi-Fi or Thread. For Google Matter setup and control, confirm a compatible Matter hub; for Thread, confirm Thread border-router capability.
- Verify your home network and phone. For Google Matter, confirm IPv6 is enabled and your phone, Bluetooth, app, and Google Play services meet Google’s stated setup requirements.
- Decide what “works in both” means for you. If you want to add an accessory to multiple ecosystems, verify the maker’s current setup instructions for each app and which controls carry over.
- Choose around household habits. Prefer Apple Home when Apple devices and Apple’s home-hub setup are central to your household; prefer Google Home when your devices and routines are centered on Google Home.
