HomePod and HomePod mini qualify as home hubs automatically when set up. Apple TV can qualify once you assign it to a room in the Home app. An iPad can still control accessories, but it is not supported as a hub in the latest Apple Home architecture. For Matter and Thread accessories, the right choice also depends on the accessory’s connectivity requirements.
Which devices can act as an Apple Home hub?

How to make an eligible device a hub
HomePod and HomePod mini
Set up the speaker in the Home app. Apple says it becomes a home hub automatically; there is no separate room-assignment step described for these speakers.

Apple TV
- On Apple TV, open Settings > AirPlay and Apple Home > Room.
- Assign Apple TV to a room in your Home. Apple says it becomes a hub after it is added to a room.
To check which hub is active, open Home Settings > Home Hubs & Bridges in the Home app. Apple says the active device appears at the top. You can turn off Automatic Selection there to choose a preferred hub manually. Apple’s setup guide

What Apple TV generation do you need?
There is no single model rule that covers every hub feature in the cited Apple guidance. For remote-control examples, Apple’s iPad user guide names Apple TV 4K (4th generation or later). For Thread-enabled Matter accessories, Apple’s setup guide names Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) with Wi-Fi + Ethernet. These are different feature contexts, not conflicting requirements.

Apple’s reviewed guidance does not provide a complete model-by-model matrix for all Apple TV hub functions. If you have an older Apple TV, check Apple’s current instructions for the exact feature you need rather than assuming that every model supports every hub capability. Do Matter and Thread accessories need a special hub?
Apple says a home hub is required to add Matter accessories to the Home app. A Thread-enabled Matter accessory additionally needs a Thread-enabled hub. Apple lists HomePod mini and Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) Wi-Fi + Ethernet as Thread-enabled examples, and also names a supported third-party Thread border router as an option. Apple’s setup troubleshooting calls for the hub to be at home, powered on, connected to the home Wi-Fi network, and updated. - Confirm the HomePod is set up or the Apple TV is assigned to a room.
- Check that the device is on, at home, connected to Wi-Fi, and running current software.
- Verify iCloud Keychain and two-factor authentication for the Apple Account.
- Make sure the person adding the device is the Home owner.
- For Thread Matter, confirm Thread support and the required Apple TV configuration, if applicable.
