Apple should make Find My a consistent option across the products it builds—but not by putting the same tracker in every object. The strongest case is for products people carry, wear, or rely on away from home, where losing them is costly and recovery is practical. Apple already covers many devices; the gap is that features vary substantially by product.
What Find My covers today—and what varies
Apple’s Find My overview includes iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Mac, AirPods, AirTag, and compatible third-party products. That is a broad ecosystem, but not a single uniform feature set. Apple’s feature matrix lists different combinations of location viewing, sound, Lost Mode, remote erase, notifications, nearby finding, and Activation Lock depending on the product. Availability can also vary by country or region. Apple’s Find My overview and feature-by-feature support table are the right checks for a specific product.

| Product category | What Apple documents | What that means for the proposal |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone and iPad | Location viewing, sound, Lost Mode, remote erase, notifications, and Activation Lock. | These already receive a relatively broad set of recovery and protection features. |
| Mac | Core location and recovery functions; Notify When Left Behind is listed for Apple silicon MacBooks. | Even within a category, hardware generation can affect availability. |
| Apple Watch | Location viewing, sound, Lost Mode, remote erase, Notify When Found, and Activation Lock. | Wearables merit recovery tools, but their feature set is not identical to an iPhone’s. |
| Apple Vision Pro | Activation Lock is listed. | Find My-related protection does not necessarily mean the full set of location-finding functions. |
| AirPods, AirTag, Apple Pencil Pro, iPhone Wallet with MagSafe, and compatible third-party items | Each has its own narrower or different combination of features. | Apple already supports more than conventional computers and phones, but implementation is product-specific. |
The table summarizes Apple’s published feature matrix; it is not a promise that every function is available in every region or software configuration. Check Apple’s current matrix before relying on a particular function.
Where broader Find My support would make sense
“Everything” is an effective demand, but a sensible product policy needs a test: does locating the item solve a real problem, and can it be done without compromising the product or its owner’s safety? A feature is most valuable for portable, expensive, frequently misplaced products that are used outside a controlled space.
#1 Best Overall
- FIND YOUR ITEMS ON FIND MY — AirTag (2nd generation) helps you keep track of what matters. Attach one to an item you want to keep track of using the Find My app.*
- EXPANDED PRECISION FINDING ON IPHONE AND APPLE WATCH — Get step-by-step directions to your lost item on iPhone and, now, Apple Watch.*
- ENHANCED SPEAKER — With a 50% louder speaker and a new, distinctive chime, it’s easier than ever to hear and find AirTag.*
- PING FROM FAR AND WIDE — Upgraded Ultra Wideband and Bluetooth chips allow you to find your items from even farther away than ever before.*
- SHARE ITEM LOCATION — Share AirTag location access temporarily and securely with trusted contacts, third parties, or over 50 airline partners if you lose something important.
- High priority: mobile products whose loss strands the owner or risks substantial replacement cost. These should offer a dependable way to locate, alert, or secure the device.
- Conditional: small accessories that are easy to misplace. A nearby-finding feature or last-known location may be useful, but it should be proportionate to the item and its design.
- Low priority: stationary or inexpensive products for which location tracking adds little practical recovery value. A blanket requirement could add complexity without helping users.
This is a product-fit argument, not a claim that Apple has announced a plan to expand Find My. Apple’s published support pages describe current capabilities, not a commitment to add them to every future product.
Make the experience consistent, not identical
Apple’s existing options illustrate why “Find My everywhere” should mean a coherent recovery experience rather than identical hardware or menus. A device with its own power source and network connection can support functions that a small accessory cannot. An item may be locatable nearby, show a reported location, play a sound, or offer a way to mark it lost; those capabilities are not interchangeable.

AirTag is Apple’s dedicated item-finding product, while compatible third-party items can join the Find My ecosystem. Neither is a substitute for integrating appropriate recovery features into every Apple product: attaching a separate tracker adds another item to manage and does not provide device-specific protections such as remote erase or Activation Lock. Apple’s feature list distinguishes these implementations. Review the supported functions by item type.

Apple should explain limitations plainly rather than letting the Find My name imply identical functionality.

Offline finding helps, but it is not a guarantee
Apple describes the Find My network as using nearby Apple devices and Bluetooth to detect supported missing devices or items and relay an approximate location to the owner. Apple says the process is anonymous and encrypted. It also describes the network as comprising over a billion Apple devices; that is Apple’s own scale claim, not an independent count. Apple’s Find My overview and Find My privacy notice explain the company’s account of how it works.
Network finding depends on a supported product and nearby participating devices; it should not be presented as live GPS coverage or a guarantee of recovery. Apple also says some iPhones can continue reporting location for up to 24 hours after shutdown or when the battery is low. This is a qualified capability for some iPhones, not a general promise for all Apple products. See Apple’s description of offline finding and supported devices.

Privacy safeguards must expand with the feature
A location system that helps recover a lost device can also be misused to follow someone. Apple warns that AirTag, Find My network accessories, and certain AirPods should not be used to track people or property without permission. Its guidance documents unwanted-tracking alerts and says such conduct is a crime in many countries and regions. Apple’s unwanted-tracking guidance describes the safeguards and response steps.
That warning should shape any expansion, not sit in a footnote. Apple should make consent and anti-stalking protections part of the design for every new category: clear alerts for people who may be tracked, usable steps to identify and disable an unwanted tracker, and careful limits on who can see a device’s location. Apple describes its network as anonymous and encrypted, but that does not mean location technology has no safety risks.

What Apple should standardize
The practical goal is a baseline of predictable recovery, with product-specific functions where they make sense. Apple can apply the following standard to each new product and major redesign:
- Decide whether location recovery is useful. Prioritize items that travel with users and are costly or disruptive to lose; do not add tracking to a product simply to satisfy an “everything” slogan.
- Choose a fitting implementation. Determine whether the product can use its existing hardware or whether a different approach is needed. Battery life, size, and cost are legitimate engineering questions, but Apple’s public Find My documentation does not quantify their trade-offs for prospective products.
- Publish the exact capabilities. State whether the product supports location viewing, sound, Lost Mode, remote erase, alerts, or other functions, and identify software, hardware, and regional limits.
- Build in safety protections. Include unwanted-tracking detection and response appropriate to the new product type, and make the consent boundary clear.
- Keep setup current and explicit. For example, Apple’s setup documentation says AirTag (2nd generation) requires iOS or iPadOS 26.2.1 or later. Check Apple’s current requirements before setup because compatibility can change with software releases. AirTag setup and compatibility requirements.
The case for “everything” is really a case for fewer blind spots
Apple has already built a substantial Find My ecosystem, including its own devices, AirTag, and compatible third-party items. The remaining argument is not that every object needs a tracker, or that every product should offer the same tools. It is that customers should not have to guess whether an Apple product can be found, what “Find My” means for that particular item, or what safety protections apply.
Apple should make Find My support a deliberate design question across its entire lineup, then include the right recovery functions wherever they are useful, technically appropriate, and safe. That would deliver the spirit of “Find My in everything” without pretending that a laptop, a pair of earbuds, and a stationary device have identical needs.
