Does my car support CarPlay or Android Auto?
Check the exact year, model, trim and installed factory stereo—not just the car brand or model name. Support can differ across configurations and countries. Apple directs owners to its supported-car information and the vehicle maker; Google publishes lists for compatible vehicles and stereos. Their product-page model counts are broad vendor claims, not confirmation for a particular car.

- Identify your phone: CarPlay requires an iPhone; Android Auto requires a compatible Android phone.
- Look up the exact vehicle year, model and trim in the relevant platform’s compatibility information, then confirm with the automaker or the vehicle manual.
- Check whether your specific car supports the platform over USB, wirelessly, or both. A car that supports one connection mode may not support the other.
- If the car has an aftermarket receiver, check the exact stereo model against the platform’s stereo compatibility information and confirm vehicle fitment and installation needs.
For CarPlay, Apple also says to check that the feature is supported in your country or region. Its iPhone CarPlay connection guide covers prerequisites and setup.

Does Android Auto work wirelessly?
Yes, but only when the Android phone and the car or supported aftermarket stereo are compatible with wireless Android Auto. - Connection mode: confirm whether your car supports the wired or wireless setup you want.
- Apps and features: compare the navigation, messaging and media apps you actually use, including whether they are available in your region and vehicle.
What if the car does not support your preferred system?
Try a cable only for a supported wired connection
A cable can help establish a wired connection when the car supports the chosen platform; it cannot add CarPlay or Android Auto support to an incompatible vehicle. Use the correct USB port and a data-capable cable where required. For Android Auto, Google recommends a high-quality USB cable.
Consider an aftermarket stereo
An aftermarket receiver can add CarPlay to some cars, and compatible aftermarket stereos are an option for Android Auto as well. Apple names Alpine, Blaupunkt, Clarion, JVC, Kenwood, Pioneer and Sony among its aftermarket system brands; Google’s stereo information includes Alpine, JVC, Kenwood, Pioneer and Sony. Before buying, verify the exact receiver supports the platform you want, fits your vehicle and meets its installation requirements. No specific receiver model is established here as a recommendation.
Troubleshoot a connection that will not start
- Confirm that both the phone and the exact car or stereo support the selected platform and connection mode.
- For a wired setup, use the correct CarPlay-marked or smartphone USB port and check the cable; a charging-only cable may not provide the data connection required.
- Check the platform’s phone requirements, including the Android version requirements for Android Auto.
- For wireless setup, confirm that the car or stereo supports it; for CarPlay, check that iPhone Wi-Fi is enabled.
- Check for available phone and vehicle software updates and follow the relevant platform and vehicle instructions.
A failed connection by itself does not show that one platform is generally less reliable than the other; reliability has not been established by a comparative test here.
