An “Apple ARM CPU” is an informal way to describe an Apple-designed processor based on the 64-bit Arm-family arm64 architecture. For Macs, Apple calls its platform Apple silicon. The CPU is one part of an integrated chip, not the name of a single Apple processor model.
What does “Apple ARM” mean?
The phrase combines two ideas: Apple silicon is Apple’s name for its designed silicon platform, while arm64 is the architecture target Apple documents for native Apple silicon software. Apple does not use “Apple ARM CPU” as the formal name of one product. The phrase is useful shorthand, but it does not identify a particular chip or Mac model.

In this context, “Arm” refers to the architecture family; arm64 is Apple’s spelling for the 64-bit target used by native Mac software. Apple’s Apple silicon developer documentation describes the software architecture and notes that developers may need to review code that relies on hardware-specific behavior.

No. An Apple silicon chip in a Mac is a system-on-chip (SoC), integrating the CPU with other components. Apple’s WWDC20 architecture session describes CPU and GPU access to unified memory and discusses specialized components such as video encoders and decoders and the Neural Engine. Those details explain the approach Apple presented in 2020; they should not be taken to mean every Apple silicon generation has identical hardware.

Apple engineer John described the design in the WWDC20 session on Apple silicon Mac architecture: “The new Apple Silicon Macs combine all these components into a single system on a chip, or SoC.”
How does Apple silicon differ from an Intel Mac?
The key software distinction is the processor architecture: Apple silicon Macs use arm64, while Intel Macs use x86_64. A universal macOS application can include both versions, and macOS selects the native version for the computer. Apple explains these architecture slices in its guide to building a universal macOS binary.

An Intel application can also run on Apple silicon through Rosetta translation, but that is not the same as running a native arm64 build. Whether an app runs natively, runs through translation, or requires another compatibility option depends on the app and its available build.
Apple’s 2020 announcement described the Mac’s transition to Apple silicon as a move toward a common architecture across Apple products. That is historical context, not a claim that Macs and other Apple devices use identical chips or configurations.

How can you tell whether a Mac has Apple silicon or Intel?
Use the Mac’s built-in system information rather than relying on its appearance or marketing name:
- Open the Apple menu and choose About This Mac.
- Look for the hardware label. An Apple silicon Mac shows Chip followed by the chip name. An Intel Mac shows Processor followed by an Intel processor name.
Apple’s Mac computers with Apple silicon support page describes this identification method and lists supported Mac families; its model list may change as Apple releases new computers.

Does “ARM” tell you how fast a Mac is?
No. The architecture label alone does not establish performance. Performance depends on the specific computer, chip implementation, workload, and software. Apple’s developer guidance recommends adapting and measuring software on target hardware rather than relying on architectural assumptions. Its Apple Silicon CPU Optimization Guide covers topics including instruction-set features, SIMD and floating-point instructions, cache and CPU topology, asymmetric multiprocessing, and performance measurement. It is developer guidance, not a ranking of all Apple silicon and Intel Macs.

What does the term mean in practical use?
- If someone says a Mac has an “Apple ARM CPU,” they usually mean it has Apple silicon and runs native software for the
arm64architecture. - If you are checking app compatibility, look for an
arm64or universal build; an Intel-onlyx86_64app may instead rely on Rosetta on Apple silicon. - If you are comparing computer speed, use results for the specific models and workload rather than treating “ARM” or “Intel” as a performance verdict.
