Apple’s AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) offer a useful middle ground: they reduce some surrounding noise without silicone tips sealing the ear canal. That open fit can suit people who dislike the plugged-ear feeling, but it also limits passive isolation and makes comfort and stability highly individual. Expect helpful noise reduction, not the hush of sealed noise-canceling earbuds.
What makes the ANC AirPods 4 different?
The earbuds sit in the ear without silicone tips, so they do not form the tight seal found on AirPods Pro and other sealed in-ear models. For some listeners, that feels less intrusive. The trade-off is that fit depends more on ear shape, and outside sound has a more direct path into the ear.

Apple introduced the AirPods 4 range in 2024. Both versions use Bluetooth 5.3, but the ANC model adds several features beyond noise cancellation. Apple lists the model’s specifications at AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation tech specs.
How effective is the noise canceling?
The ANC version can reduce some environmental sound despite its unsealed fit, but it cannot compensate fully for the lack of passive isolation. SoundGuys describes the overall effect as middling: its measurements found about 20 dB of cancellation in mid and high frequencies, while low-frequency noise can remain. That 20 dB figure is SoundGuys’ outlet-specific measurement, not an Apple specification or a result that applies uniformly to every listener. See its AirPods 4 ANC review for the test context.

RTINGS likewise finds that sealed in-ear alternatives isolate better. In practice, these earbuds are more suitable if you want some reduction of everyday background noise while avoiding a sealed feeling than if your priority is blocking as much sound as possible. ANC may also feel less effective when the earbuds do not sit securely in your ears.
Fit and comfort depend on your ears
There are no tips to size or swap. The open design avoids the tight, plugged sensation some people dislike, but it does not guarantee a comfortable or secure fit for everyone. SoundGuys reports materially different comfort and retention experiences among its reviewers; one wearer’s result is not a reliable prediction for another. RTINGS contrasts this fit with the more stable, tip-based fit of sealed models.

If the earbuds tend to loosen or fall out, the open shape may be a poor match regardless of its comfort advantage. People who want a more secure seal, longer-session fit stability, or stronger isolation should consider sealed options such as AirPods Pro instead.

Battery life: Apple’s ANC claim and an independent test
Apple rates the ANC AirPods 4 for up to four hours of listening on a charge with ANC enabled, or up to 20 hours total using the case. With noise control off, Apple lists up to five hours per charge and up to 30 hours with the case. Apple also says a five-minute case charge provides around one hour of listening. These are manufacturer “up to” figures, not guaranteed runtimes.
Apple says its battery testing took place in July and August 2024 with pre-production AirPods and iPhone 16 Pro Max units, pre-release software, 50% volume, and a 358-track AAC playlist. Apple’s published test-mode details apply to the corresponding battery result. As Apple notes, “Battery life depends on device settings, environment, usage and many other factors.”

SoundGuys measured 6 hours 21 minutes in its single-charge test with both noise cancellation and Transparency off. That is an independent test under a different mode, so it is not a contradiction of Apple’s ANC-on estimate or a measure of ANC-on endurance. RTINGS characterizes ANC battery life as short. For comparison, the clearest expectation is Apple’s lower, mode-specific ANC figure rather than the SoundGuys result with noise controls disabled.
Charging, durability, and device compatibility
The ANC model’s case charges through USB-C, an Apple Watch charger, or a Qi-certified wireless charger. Apple says the USB-C cable is sold separately. Its case also has a speaker to help locate it with Find My.

Apple rates the earbuds IP54 for dust, sweat, and water resistance. That is not a waterproof rating; SoundGuys cautions against wearing them in the shower.
They can work as Bluetooth headphones with non-Apple devices, but Apple warns that functionality may be limited. SoundGuys also identifies Apple-device integration as a major part of the appeal, so buyers using Android should not assume they will get the same feature experience as with an Apple device.
