Use UiAutomator2 for Android and XCUITest for iOS; identify every target explicitly, then assign unique driver ports and, for iOS, a separate WebDriverAgent derived-data path. You can coordinate sessions through one Appium server process or run multiple server processes.
What each parallel worker needs
Think of a worker as a complete pairing of one test execution, one target device, and one isolated set of session resources. A device name alone is not enough: two sessions can target different devices yet still compete for the same port or generated build data.

| Target | Driver and device identity | Resources to make unique per active session |
|---|---|---|
| Android emulator | UiAutomator2; set appium:udid. An emulator AVD identity can also help identify the target. |
appium:systemPort; appium:chromedriverPort for Chrome or webview automation; appium:mjpegServerPort if capturing video. |
| iOS simulator | XCUITest; set appium:udid, or use a unique deviceName and platformVersion pair. |
appium:wdaLocalPort and appium:derivedDataPath; appium:mjpegServerPort if streaming video. |
Use the W3C appium: namespace for driver-specific capabilities when required by your client and server combination. Capability names and behavior are driver-version-sensitive, so check the README matching the driver you have installed rather than relying on older general capability documentation: UiAutomator2 driver README and XCUITest parallel-test guide.
Prepare Appium and the device targets
Install the platform drivers and prerequisites
Install Appium and the driver for each platform you intend to test. UiAutomator2 requires Android SDK Platform Tools, a configured ANDROID_HOME or ANDROID_SDK_ROOT, Java, and an installed emulator platform image. Its documentation lists Windows, Linux, and macOS as supported host operating systems. To check many Android prerequisites, run appium driver doctor uiautomator2; the UiAutomator2 README says this command has been available since driver version 2.39.0.

Start and identify distinct targets
Start the emulators and simulators that your workers will use before launching the parallel run. For Android, run adb devices -l to see connected-device identifiers. Set an explicit udid for each UiAutomator2 session: if it is omitted, the driver can select the first connected device, which risks sending a worker to the wrong emulator. For iOS simulators, use xcrun simctl list to find simulator identifiers.
Choose how Appium serves concurrent sessions
There are two supported layouts: one Appium server process can handle multiple session requests, or you can run multiple server processes, each listening on a different server port and serving one session. The driver guides describe the single-process approach as using fewer resources and offering better control. Multiple processes remain an option when they fit your runner’s orchestration. In either layout, your test framework must maintain a reliable mapping from each worker to its intended device and capability set.

- Detailed image quality comparable to professional thermal imagers
- Full temperature range analysis
- Real-time image sharing, communication without barriers
- Small and portable, it takes a second to get started
Appium server ports and driver ports are separate concerns. If you run multiple server processes, give each process its own server port. Regardless of server layout, do not let active sessions reuse a host-side port required by the same driver feature.

Create one session configuration per worker, with a distinct target identity and explicit values for every resource that worker uses. A conceptual Android allocation might give two emulators different UDIDs and system ports; if both run webview tests, give them different ChromeDriver ports too. An iOS allocation needs a different simulator UDID, WDA local port, and derived-data path for each worker. Add unique MJPEG ports only when video streaming is enabled.

The Android UiAutomator2 README describes an automatic systemPort selection range of 8200–8299. Treat that as a selection range, not a safe value to copy into every worker: check that each chosen port is free and unique among active sessions. The XCUITest parallel guide documents defaults of 8100 for the local WDA port and 9100 for the MJPEG port; concurrent sessions that use those features need distinct values to avoid contention. See the current UiAutomator2 README and XCUITest parallel guide for driver-specific details.
Keep optional features out of a worker’s configuration if its tests do not need them. For example, Android webview automation introduces a ChromeDriver port to allocate; enabling unused port-using features creates more opportunities for collisions.

Scale up in stages and verify the mapping
- Inventory targets. Start the intended emulators or simulators, record each UDID, and confirm that every worker has a distinct target.
- Assign resources. Reserve the necessary driver ports and, for iOS, distinct
derivedDataPathvalues before launching sessions. Include ChromeDriver or MJPEG ports only where those features are enabled. - Start a small run. Launch a limited number of workers and confirm from the session behavior and server logs that each one reached the intended device.
- Increase concurrency gradually. Watch for port-binding errors, device readiness problems, server failures, and host resource saturation as you add workers.
- Record the working allocation. Keep the worker-to-device mapping and its capability values together in your test-runner configuration so a later run does not silently reuse an active resource.
This staged approach follows the drivers’ isolation requirements; it does not establish a guaranteed number of sessions or a particular speedup. The viable concurrency level depends on the targets, startup time, host capacity, and the reliability of your actual app and test workload.
Troubleshoot common parallel-run failures
“Address already in use” or a session fails during startup
Check for duplicate allocations among active sessions and stale processes that still hold ports. Audit every port the enabled features use: Android systemPort, chromedriverPort, and mjpegServerPort; iOS wdaLocalPort and mjpegServerPort. Confirm that each value is unique where sessions run concurrently.

An Android test runs on the wrong emulator
Set appium:udid explicitly for each UiAutomator2 session and compare it with the identifiers shown by adb devices -l. Without an explicit UDID, the driver may select the first connected device.
iOS sessions conflict during build or launch
Give each XCUITest session a distinct appium:derivedDataPath as well as a unique WDA local port. Separate paths prevent concurrent sessions from sharing generated build data.
Sessions pass alone but fail together
Compare each worker’s complete capability set, not just its device name. Verify target identity, every port used by an enabled feature, and iOS per-session paths. A setup that works sequentially can still collide when sessions are active at the same time.
