Appium finds mobile UI elements through WebDriver lookup commands in an active session. The locator strategy is interpreted by the session’s driver, so first check which platform and driver your test uses, then use a strategy that driver supports.
How Appium element lookup works
Your client sends a WebDriver command such as findElement or findElements to the Appium server during a session. Most WebDriver endpoints are then proxied to the active driver, which implements them. Appium therefore does not apply one universal locator engine to every Android and iOS app.

A driver may support only some standard WebDriver locator strategies, or it may provide additional custom strategies. A request for a strategy outside that driver’s allowed set is rejected. Check the current locator-strategy reference for the exact driver and version in your test setup before choosing a selector: Appium driver locator strategies.

Android with the UiAutomator2 driver
The official Appium Python quickstart configures an Android session using UiAutomator2Options and automationName='uiautomator2'. It locates the Settings screen’s “Apps” element with XPath, then clicks it:

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.

This is specifically a Python, Android, UiAutomator2, and XPath example—not an iOS recipe or evidence that XPath is fastest or best for every app. The surrounding quickstart shows session setup and test structure: Write a Test (Python).

Single match or multiple matches
Use the client’s single-element lookup when you want one match, or its multiple-element lookup when you need to collect matches. The WebDriver protocol documents findElement, findElements, and element-scoped lookup endpoints; exact method spelling depends on the client language.

Choose a locator for your driver, not in the abstract
To answer “Which locator should I use for a mobile app element?”, begin with the driver’s supported strategy list. Then compare eligible choices based on how directly the selector identifies the intended target, how much the relevant UI may change, and lookup time measured in your own test setup. The cited sources do not establish a universal ranking for speed, stability, or maintainability.

- Confirm the target platform, active driver, and driver version used by the session.
- Check that driver’s current locator reference for supported standard and custom strategies.
- Choose a selector that identifies the intended element clearly in the app you are testing.
- Validate the selector against the actual screen and app state exercised by the test.
- If lookup performance matters, measure it in your own setup rather than assuming one strategy is always fastest.
Troubleshoot failed element lookups
The request is rejected as an unsupported strategy
Cause: the active driver does not allow the requested locator strategy. Fix: consult that driver’s reference for its current supported set and use an allowed strategy or a driver-supported custom one.
The lookup returns no match
Cause: the selector may not match the screen state or element being tested. Fix: confirm the test is on the expected screen, check the selector against that app’s UI, and verify that the strategy is supported by the session’s driver.

The same locator behaves differently across platforms
Cause: locator interpretation and implementation belong to the active driver, and platform drivers need not expose identical strategy support. Fix: treat platform examples as scoped recipes; check the Android or iOS driver documentation for the setup you actually run.

Appium is for automating mobile apps; ScreenshotNeo is a separate website screenshot API and MCP server for capturing web pages. If your task is to capture a website rather than locate an element in a native mobile app, one GET request returns an image or PDF. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.
