Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAppGeek is a free Windows updater that checks your installed desktop programs and Microsoft Store packages against the winget catalogue, then shows the available updates in one list so you can choose which ones to run. That combined review step is the part most people want. What it does not do is guarantee coverage: according to its developer, it matches apps rather than updating everything, and Microsoft’s own Store rules still decide whether a Store package can be downloaded at all. The details below separate what TechyGeeksHome says AppGeek does from what Microsoft documents about winget and the Store.
What AppGeek does, according to its developer
TechyGeeksHome describes AppGeek as a free, open-source app updater for Windows. Its product page says the tool:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- reads the installed-program registry and the list of Microsoft Store packages on the PC;
- matches those applications against winget;
- displays the updates it finds in a single list;
- runs the updates you select, one after another (sequential execution).
The developer also describes a catalogue of 67 common applications that AppGeek can help you install on a new or rebuilt PC. That count is a product feature claim stated by TechyGeeksHome in 2026 and checked on its product page on 7 October 2026; it is not an independently measured figure.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The SourceForge project listing adds one implementation detail: it says AppGeek detects whether an application is installed per user or machine-wide and pins winget to that scope. Neither the developer page nor the listing describes how that matching performs on a particular PC, and this article has not tested it on a live system.

How winget and the Microsoft Store fit together
Winget is Microsoft’s command-line package manager. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance states that winget can install or manage Microsoft Store apps, so it is not accurate to say winget cannot touch Store packages. The Store also runs its own update channel. Microsoft Support explains that when App updates is turned on, the Store can install app updates automatically, and that some publishers manage updates through their own app instead.
That overlap is why one app can appear to be reachable from two places. AppGeek’s contribution is the unified review list and the matching layer that connects installed programs and Store packages to winget entries. It is not evidence that winget and the Store are otherwise disconnected.
Requirements and prerequisites
The developer lists the following requirements for AppGeek:
- Operating system: Windows 10 version 1809 (build 17763) or later, or Windows 11, 64-bit.
- Rights: administrator rights. This is AppGeek’s own stated requirement, not a rule that applies to every Windows updater.
- winget: the developer says AppGeek can offer to repair winget if it is missing.
The prerequisite depends on which build you download:
| AppGeek build | Prerequisite stated by the developer |
|---|---|
| Standalone | None |
| Light | .NET 8 Desktop Runtime |
| Installer and portable | Not stated on the product page (the page lists these as available distributions) |
If you pick the light build, install the .NET 8 Desktop Runtime before running it. If you pick the standalone build, the developer says nothing else is needed.

When winget is missing or broken
Microsoft documents App Installer as the package that contains the winget client. If winget is unavailable, Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance lists two routes: install App Installer from the Microsoft Store, or install it manually with a package installer. The Microsoft Learn page on installing and updating App Installer covers the same package. AppGeek’s repair offer should be read as the developer’s convenience feature, and the Microsoft routes are the documented fallback.
Running one update pass
The developer’s page does not publish exact button labels or screen layouts, so the steps below describe the workflow in general terms. Confirm the wording on your build.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Start AppGeek with administrator rights, as the developer requires.
- Let the initial scan finish. It reads installed programs and Store packages, then compares them with winget.
- Review the list of updates. The developer says AppGeek does not install anything on its own; scheduled scanning can report findings, but installation requires you to tick applications and proceed.
- Tick only the applications you want to update, then start the run. The selected updates execute one after another.
- Check the result for each application. If a Store package fails or an app is missing from the list, use the checks in the next section.
The developer’s own tagline for this behaviour is “It only ever installs what you tick” (TechyGeeksHome, AppGeek product page, accessed 7 October 2026).
Where a single run stops
- Not every Store app is guaranteed. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance says Store download and update failures can depend on Store registration, Store download policy and access, and the network endpoints the Store needs. Nothing in the sources indicates that AppGeek overrides those conditions.
- Matching depends on winget. By the developer’s description, an application that winget does not list cannot be matched through this method, so it will not appear as an update.
- Scope matters. Per-user and machine-wide installs are handled differently according to the listing’s description, so an app installed for another account may not appear in the same way.
- Developer claims are untested here. Scanning, matching, scope handling and privacy statements come from TechyGeeksHome and its project listing. This article did not install or audit AppGeek.
For Store-specific failures, start with Microsoft’s guide to troubleshooting Microsoft Store app download failures, which covers the registration, policy and network checks described above.
Trust, licensing and distribution
The developer describes AppGeek as licensed under GPL-3.0, free for home and work use, and available as installer, portable and light builds. It also says the builds are not code-signed and that each release publishes SHA-256 checksums. These are publisher statements. They are not independent security verification.

Because the build is not code-signed, Windows will not show a verified publisher name for it. If you download AppGeek, compare the file’s hash with the checksum on the release page. In PowerShell, run Get-FileHash -Algorithm SHA256 .AppGeek.exe in the folder containing the download, using the actual file name, and check that the output matches the published value.
