App Store Optimization (ASO) Basics: A Practical Guide for Apple and Google Play

A practical guide to App Store Optimization: choose relevant metadata, make the listing clear, test creative changes, and measure results separately on Apple and Google Play.

App Store Optimization (ASO) is the ongoing work of helping the right people find an app in a store and understand its value once they land on its listing. It combines relevant, accurate metadata with clear visuals, then uses store analytics and controlled tests to improve discovery and listing conversion. Apple’s App Store and Google Play use different fields and tools, so optimize each listing separately; neither platform guarantees a particular ranking or download increase.

What ASO can—and cannot—do

ASO addresses two related but distinct parts of the path to an install:

  • Discovery: Store metadata can help an app appear for relevant searches. Apple identifies elements such as the app name and keywords as part of product-page discovery guidance; Google recommends a distinctive title and a description focused on user value. Neither source promises a particular placement. Apple’s product-page guidance and Google’s Play search guidance describe their respective approaches.
  • Conversion: Once someone visits the listing, the name, icon, description, screenshots, and other preview assets help them decide whether the app fits their needs.

More visibility alone does not ensure more installs: visitors must also see a credible match between what they searched for and what the app actually does. Likewise, a persuasive page cannot help people who never find it. Treat ASO as improving the listing and learning from results, not as a way to guarantee rankings or a download lift.

Know which store listing you are changing

Apple’s App Store and Google Play expose different metadata, policies, experiments, and reporting. Limits and field purposes do not transfer from one store to the other.

App name or title Part of Apple’s product-page guidance; the cited guidance gives a 100-character limit for the separate keyword field, not a matching app-name limit. See Apple product-page guidance. 30 characters. See Google Play app setup guidance.
Additional searchable or descriptive text Keyword field: 100 characters total. Promotional text does not affect search ranking and should not be used to display keywords. See Apple product-page guidance. Short description: 80 characters; full description: 4,000 characters. See Google Play app setup guidance.
Listing tests Product Page Optimization compares eligible creative treatments with the original page; it is not available for custom product pages or Apple Watch and iMessage product pages. See Apple’s test overview. Store listing experiments can test supported graphics and text, including localized listings, with up to two variants against the current listing. See Google’s experiment guidance.

Apple’s metadata and policy

Apple documents a total limit of 100 characters for the keyword field. Choose terms that accurately describe the app and its functions. Apple warns against irrelevant terms and unauthorized protected terms. It also says promotional text does not affect search ranking, so use that field to communicate timely information rather than to insert keywords. Apple’s product-page guidance explains the roles of the name, icon, keywords, screenshots, previews, and description; Apple’s search guidance describes monitoring store performance.

Google Play’s metadata and policy

Google Play allows 30 characters for the app name, 80 for the short description, and 4,000 for the full description. Use the short description to convey the main user benefit, then use the full description to explain features and context in readable language. Google warns that misleading, irrelevant, excessive, or inappropriate metadata is not acceptable; repetitive or irrelevant keyword use can lead to suspension. See Google’s app setup guidance and Play search guidance.

A practical ASO workflow

  1. Start with the audience and use case. Identify who the app serves, what they are trying to accomplish, and which features genuinely solve that need. This gives you a basis for choosing relevant search terms and deciding what the listing should explain.
  2. Choose terms by relevance, not repetition. Build a short list of phrases a prospective user might use, then keep only terms that accurately match the app. Use Apple’s keyword field within its 100-character total limit. On Google Play, write for people within the separate title and description limits rather than copying Apple’s keyword-field approach.
  3. Write the listing around the user’s decision. Make the app’s purpose and distinguishing value clear. Explain features in plain language and avoid claims the app cannot support. On Google Play, place the central benefit in the short description and expand on it in the full description. On Apple, use the available product-page elements for their documented purposes; do not use promotional text as a ranking keyword field.
  4. Make the visuals prove the promise. Use an accurate icon, screenshots, and available preview assets to show the app and its real experience. The images should make the app’s fit and core use understandable rather than imply capabilities it does not have. Google specifically recommends useful screenshots that accurately show the app; Apple also identifies screenshots and previews as product-page elements. See Google’s discovery guidance and Apple’s product-page guidance.
  5. Establish a baseline before editing. Record the store-side traffic and conversion measures available for the listing, along with the date and exact fields or assets currently live. If a change is made, keep a dated change log so later movement can be interpreted against what actually changed.
  6. Test a focused change and review the relevant metric. Use the store’s first-party experiment tools where eligible. Change one asset at a time when possible, especially on Google Play, which recommends this approach for clearer interpretation. Compare the metric connected to the change and account for traffic volume and uncertainty.
  7. Keep the listing current and compliant. Revisit the listing when the app’s core value, supported features, or audience changes, and review performance regularly rather than treating optimization as a one-time launch task.

Use first-party experiments carefully

Apple Product Page Optimization

Apple’s Product Page Optimization can compare up to three alternate app icons, screenshot sets, and app previews with the original page; treatments can be localized. The app must be Ready for Distribution. The feature is unavailable for custom product pages and Apple Watch or iMessage product pages. Treatment display applies on iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 or later. See Apple’s overview of Product Page Optimization.

In App Analytics, Apple reports estimated conversion, lift, and confidence. Results appear after at least five first-time downloads are attributed to the test. Apple may label a treatment “Performing Better” or “Performing Worse” when its result reaches 90% confidence relative to the baseline. That is a platform reporting threshold, not a guarantee that a test will identify a winner or that the outcome will generalize to every audience. Details are in Apple’s Product Page Optimization analytics help.

Google Play store listing experiments

Google Play experiments support default graphics and localized listing tests. Depending on the experiment type, supported test elements include icons, feature graphics, screenshots, and descriptions. You can test up to two variants against the current listing. Available metrics include unique user install clicks, open clicks, or pre-registration clicks. Play Console estimates the time and volume needed for a statistically significant result, and experiments stop collecting data after six months. See Google’s store listing experiment guidance.

Google recommends testing one asset at a time to make results easier to interpret. If several meaningful elements change together, you may not know which one affected the measured outcome. An experiment’s reported result applies to the tested listing, audience, and period; it is not a universal ranking rule.

Measure the funnel, not just a rank

A ranking position is only one signal and may not explain whether a listing is attracting the right people. Track the stages you can observe:

  • Impressions or listing visitors: whether people are encountering or opening the store page, using the available store reporting.
  • Listing conversion or install actions: whether visitors take the store’s relevant install, open, or pre-registration action.
  • Downloads or acquisitions: whether those actions result in app acquisition, as reported by the store.
  • Post-install activation and retention: whether acquired users reach meaningful in-app milestones and continue using the product. These are product analytics measures, not claims about store ranking.

Match the measure to the change. If you changed screenshots to clarify a feature, examine listing conversion and the relevant experiment outcome; if you changed discovery metadata, review available store traffic and acquisition measures. Apple’s search guidance points developers to impressions, conversion rate, downloads, and other App Analytics measures. Google’s experiment guidance describes experiment-specific action metrics.

A maintenance checklist

  • Keep Apple and Google Play metadata separate, respecting each store’s fields and limits.
  • Use terms that describe the app accurately; avoid irrelevant repetition, misleading claims, and unauthorized protected terms.
  • Make the value clear in copy and show real app functionality in visuals.
  • Use App Store Connect and Play Console reporting before assuming paid ASO software is necessary; third-party tools are optional aids, not official ranking authorities.
  • Log listing changes with dates and test one interpretable asset change at a time where practical.
  • Review traffic, conversion, acquisition, and—when relevant—product activation or retention instead of relying on rank alone.
  • Refresh the listing when the app or the needs it serves materially change.
