There is no single screenshot size that works for every App Store or Google Play listing. Apple specifies accepted dimensions by device and display class; Google Play sets a broad pixel range, then adds separate guidance for particular device types and recommendation eligibility. Correct dimensions are only part of the job: screenshots also need to represent the app accurately.

Apple App Store screenshot sizes
Apple does not use one universal iPhone screenshot size. Its current specifications list dimensions by device model and display class, and portrait and landscape versions reverse width and height. Check the device table before exporting rather than assuming a size accepted for one iPhone will cover every iPhone.

iPhone examples
For the 6.9-inch display class, Apple lists portrait dimensions of 1260 × 2736, 1290 × 2796 and 1320 × 2868 pixels. For the 6.3-inch class, it lists 1179 × 2556 and 1206 × 2622 pixels. These are examples from the device-specific reference, not a complete list of accepted iPhone sizes. Other Apple device families and scaling
The reference also covers iPad, Mac, Apple TV, Apple Vision Pro and Apple Watch. For many device classes, Apple can scale screenshots from another display class when custom screenshots are absent. When the interface is the same across device sizes and localizations, Apple says you can supply the highest-resolution screenshots required and have them scaled down; you can also add custom sizes or localizations in Media Manager. Scaling can reduce asset work, but it does not remove the need to satisfy required device assets for submission. Apple’s upload guidance.

Apple file rules and submission errors
- Upload one to ten screenshots in JPEG, JPG or PNG format.
- Images must not contain an alpha channel or transparency.
- Some screenshot sizes are required for review submission. Apple says App Store Connect returns an error at submission if required assets are missing. Apple App Screenshots API documentation.
Google Play screenshot sizes and recommendations
General publishing constraints
Google Play’s general screenshot rule accepts images from 320 to 3840 pixels, provided the longest dimension is no more than twice the shortest. Use JPEG or 24-bit PNG without alpha. Google says a listing needs at least two screenshots across different device types to publish. These broad limits are not a substitute for checking rules tied to the device types you distribute to. Recommendations for apps and games
Google labels these as highly recommended requirements that can affect recommendation and promotional eligibility; they are not the same as the general minimum to publish.

Tablet, Chromebook, Wear OS and other device rules
- Chromebook and tablet listings: Google’s large-screen guidance calls for at least four images between 1080 and 7680 px, in 9:16 or 16:9.
- Wear OS: screenshots must accurately show the current app interface, use a 1:1 ratio and be at least 384 × 384 px. Google says not to add device frames or decorative material.
- Android TV and other form factors: check the relevant device-specific section in Google Play’s asset guidance; the general range alone may not satisfy those rules.

Why dimension-valid screenshots can still cause problems
Apple: missing required device assets
Apple explicitly documents one submission failure: if required screenshot sizes are missing, App Store Connect returns an error when you submit the app for review. The required assets depend on the applicable device classes, so check the current specification for your app rather than relying on a generic export preset. Apple screenshot API documentation.
Google Play: imagery that misrepresents the app
Google requires listing imagery to reflect the app’s real functionality. Its policy says that metadata, including screenshots, must precisely reflect what the app does; its publication tips warn that a discrepancy between listing promises and the delivered app can lead to rejection. Misleading, irrelevant, improperly formatted, excessive or inappropriate metadata can also violate the Developer Program Policy.

Google Play: technical and presentation problems
Stay within the format, transparency, dimensions and aspect-ratio limits. Google’s preview-asset guidance also calls for images that are clear, undistorted and correctly rotated. Avoid blurry, pixelated (unless intentionally part of the design), stretched, sideways or skewed screenshots, as well as repetitive or inappropriate imagery. For screenshots with a status bar, Google advises removing excess notification-bar elements such as service providers or notifications, and ensuring battery, Wi-Fi and cellular indicators are full. A practical checklist before upload
- Identify every target platform and device family. Separate iPhone and iPad assets from Google Play assets, and account for any tablet, Chromebook, Wear OS, Android TV or other form-factor listing.
- Check the current platform table. For Apple, match each image to the correct device class and orientation. For Google, validate both the general pixel limits and any form-factor-specific requirements. Platform specifications can change, so re-check them before submission.
- Export in an accepted format. Use JPEG or PNG as permitted by the relevant store; remove alpha and transparency where required. Confirm the image’s actual pixel dimensions and rotation after export.
- Separate mandatory rules from recommendations. On Google Play, distinguish the two-screenshot publishing minimum from the four-app or three-game recommendation guidance. Do not treat recommendation eligibility as a universal upload requirement.
- Review what the images claim. Make sure every screen shows the current app and that captions or visual treatment do not promise features the app does not deliver.
- Verify the assets in the console before submission. Confirm that the selected device slots are populated and that the console accepts the files; for Apple, missing required assets can block review submission.
How to choose between scaled and custom screenshots
Scaling can save production time when the interface is genuinely the same across device sizes and localizations. Apple allows high-resolution screenshots to be scaled down in that circumstance. Custom assets make sense when layouts, content, language, or the relevant device experience differ; they also let you tailor framing to each display class. Whichever approach you use, verify the exact current device requirements and ensure the result remains clear and representative.

What the official guidance does—and does not—establish
The cited Apple material specifies accepted technical assets and documents the submission error for missing required screenshots; it does not establish an exhaustive list of every Apple App Review policy reason that might involve screenshots. Google’s documentation explicitly covers inaccurate listing imagery and metadata-policy risks. Neither platform’s cited guidance supplies a screenshot rejection or approval rate, so a percentage should not be inferred from these rules.
