Apple still accepts one to ten screenshots in each supported screenshot set, but the exact pixel dimensions depend on the device family, display group, orientation, and sometimes the device generation. There is no single App Store screenshot size that fits every device.
Use Apple’s live screenshot specifications immediately before exporting assets. The examples and workflow below explain how to choose dimensions, prepare files, and upload them without confusing screenshots with optional app previews.
What Apple requires for App Store screenshots
Apple treats screenshots as still images attached to a platform and device-size set in your app record. The current rules are:
- Count: one to ten images per supported screenshot set.
- File types: JPEG/JPG or PNG.
- Transparency: alpha channels and transparent backgrounds are not allowed.
- Dimensions: accepted pixel sizes vary by platform, display-size group, orientation, and device generation.
Apple states in its upload guide, “You can upload a minimum of one and a maximum of ten screenshots in .jpeg, .jpg, and .png formats.” That count applies to each platform/device-size set you submit, not to your entire app record across every platform.

The dated 2026 minimum is not the complete device matrix
Apple’s September 2026 release notes say that a submission needs only one 6.5-inch or 6.9-inch iPhone screenshot and one 13-inch iPad screenshot. This is a minimum coverage rule announced for September 2026; it does not replace Apple’s broader table of accepted dimensions or remove the option to provide additional device-size and localization assets.
Apple also announced new specifications for iPhone Duo, iPhone 18 Pro Max, iPhone 18 Pro, Apple Watch Ultra 4, and Apple Watch Series 12. The release note says iPhone Duo asset uploading would become available later in 2026, so verify availability in App Store Connect before relying on that group.
Accepted App Store screenshot dimensions by device family
Apple’s specification page is the authority for the complete and changing list. The table below records representative current groups documented by Apple without pretending that one value is universal.

The numbers in the first two rows are examples from Apple’s current specification, not universal export settings. A screenshot can be rejected even when its aspect ratio looks close if its pixel dimensions do not match an accepted group.

Can one screenshot size cover every device?
Sometimes. Apple says that when the app interface is the same across device sizes and localizations, you can provide the highest-resolution screenshots required and let App Store Connect scale them down. Apple’s fallback mapping is device-group specific, so inspect the live specification table instead of assuming every larger image will be accepted everywhere.
When scaling is reasonable
- Your layout, text, and navigation are genuinely the same at the target aspect ratios.
- The source image is at least as large as the accepted size Apple requests for the set.
- Downscaling will not make captions, labels, or accessibility text illegible.
When to create a separate set
- The iPad layout rearranges controls or adds a sidebar.
- Portrait and landscape compositions tell different stories.
- A localization changes line breaks or requires different marketing copy.
- Your app supports a platform with a substantially different canvas, such as Apple TV or visionOS.
Media Manager lets you maintain custom sets for other sizes and localizations. Treat the 2026 minimum as a submission floor, not as a reason to discard useful device-specific artwork.
How many screenshots should you prepare?
You may upload up to ten screenshots for each supported set. Apple’s September 2026 minimum means a new submission can be covered with one qualifying iPhone image and one qualifying 13-inch iPad image, but additional images can explain the product more completely.
A practical sequence for a set
- Lead with the screen that communicates the app’s primary job immediately.
- Show the most important workflow or result next.
- Use later frames for differentiating features, integrations, or settings that a reviewer or customer needs to understand.
- Keep every frame readable at the displayed size; do not turn screenshots into dense instruction posters.
These are presentation choices, not additional Apple limits. The hard limit remains one to ten images per set.

Preparing screenshot files
Capture at the target canvas
Build or run the app on a device or simulator that matches the screenshot group you are targeting. Capture portrait and landscape separately when both orientations matter. Do not crop a portrait capture into a landscape canvas; the resulting composition and pixel dimensions may not match Apple’s accepted row.
Export without transparency
Save as JPEG/JPG or PNG and flatten any transparent layers onto an opaque background. A PNG with an alpha channel can fail even when its visible pixels look correct. Check the exported file’s pixel width and height, not just the design-tool frame name.
Keep localized text intentional
Prepare a separate localized set when translated strings change the layout or promotional message. Media Manager is the place to associate those custom assets with a device size and language.

- Open App Store Connect and select My Apps, then choose the app record.
- Open the platform section for the app version you are preparing.
- In the screenshots area, select the device-size set and add one to ten JPEG/JPG or PNG files.
- Use Media Manager to create or select custom device-size and localization sets when the default set is not sufficient.
- Review the rendered order, orientation, and any warnings before saving the version metadata.
Apple says screenshots can be uploaded while the app is in Prepare for Submission, Invalid Binary, Rejected, Metadata Rejected, or Developer Rejected status. After approval, changing screenshots requires creating a new app version.

“Invalid dimensions” or an unaccepted file
Compare the file’s exact pixel dimensions with the device-group row in Apple’s specification. Do not rely on a generic iPhone or iPad preset. Export again at an accepted size and re-upload.
The file uploads but transparency is flagged
Inspect the PNG for an alpha channel. Flatten the artwork against an opaque background, export again, and confirm that the new file contains no transparency.
The screenshot is assigned to the wrong device group
Open Media Manager and check the set’s platform, display-size label, orientation, and language. Move the asset to a custom set when the app’s layout differs from the default group.

You supplied only one size and the smaller device looks wrong
Apple can scale suitable larger screenshots for certain smaller groups, but the mapping varies. If text or layout breaks, create a separate accepted-size image for that group instead of depending on fallback scaling.
You cannot replace screenshots on the live version
Once an app is approved, Apple requires a new app version for screenshot changes. Add the revised assets to that version and submit the updated metadata with the binary when required.
App screenshots versus app previews
Screenshots are still images. App previews are optional videos with separate rules, workflow, and limits. Apple allows up to three previews per supported device size and language for iOS, macOS, tvOS, and visionOS apps. Each preview must be 15–30 seconds and no larger than 500 MB; the full encoding and resolution requirements are in Apple’s preview specification.
Apple’s upload guide describes a preview-production workflow involving a Mac running macOS 10.10 or later, Safari 8 or later, video-editing software, and a compatible Apple device. Those requirements apply to making and uploading preview videos, not to the still-image screenshot rules above.
