First check whether Git is still in the middle of a merge or rebase. If the pull completed, treat the app error as a separate troubleshooting problem: inspect what changed, then follow the repository’s setup and test instructions. Don’t rerun the pull or discard local changes until you know the repository’s state.
Check what Git is doing before changing anything
git pull fetches remote changes and integrates them into your current branch. As the Git project’s git-pull documentation puts it, “First, git pull runs git fetch with the same arguments (excluding merge options) to fetch remote branch(es).” The integration may fast-forward, merge, rebase, or use a squash-style workflow, depending on options and configuration. An app error after a successful integration is not, by itself, evidence that Git malfunctioned.

Start with read-only inspection:
git status
Note the current branch, whether Git reports conflicts or an operation in progress, and whether you have modified or untracked files. Preserve local work before attempting recovery. Git may stop a pull or merge when overlapping uncommitted changes could be overwritten; its merge documentation explains this safeguard. If you are unsure what a command will discard, pause and make a separate copy or commit safe work according to your team’s workflow.
If a merge or rebase is still in progress
Do not troubleshoot the app as though the integration were complete. Inspect the files Git identifies as conflicted, and check whether the operation is a merge or rebase. Conflict markers such as <<<<<<<, =======, and >>>>>>> show competing file content that needs a deliberate resolution; they are not meant to remain in the finished file. The Git user manual describes resolving conflicts by editing the files and staging the resolved versions.

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- Edit each conflicted file to keep the intended content and remove conflict markers.
- Review the result, then stage each resolved file with
git add <file>. - Follow the instructions Git gives for the operation in progress to finish the merge or rebase.
If you decide the in-progress operation should be abandoned, use the command matching the actual state: git merge --abort for a merge or git rebase --abort for a rebase. The Git pull documentation documents these abort options. Check the status and local files afterward before taking another action.
If local and remote history diverged
When both your branch and its upstream have new commits, Git needs a reconciliation strategy. A fast-forward-only pull refuses to proceed when histories have diverged; it does not choose a strategy for you. The right choice depends on the team’s shared history policy, not on a universal rule that every developer should merge or rebase.

| Approach | What it does to history | Useful consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Fast-forward-only | Moves the branch pointer forward when no divergence needs reconciliation. | Stops rather than integrating divergent histories. |
| Merge | Can record the two lines of history together in a merge commit. | Preserves existing commit identities and makes the integration explicit. |
| Rebase | Replays local commits on top of the updated upstream and rewrites their history. | Coordinate with team policy, especially for commits already shared with others. |
| Squash | Combines changes without recording the same merge relationship as a merge commit. | Use it only where the project’s workflow calls for that history shape. |
Check the project’s contribution guidance or ask the team which strategy is expected before resolving divergence. The Git git-pull documentation covers these integration choices and their options.
If the pull completed, trace the app failure to the changes
Once git status shows no integration in progress, compare the new commits and changed files with the failure. The repository’s README, setup guide, and team instructions are the authority for the app’s commands; Git documentation cannot tell you which dependency manager, configuration, build command, or test suite this project uses.

- Identify the change. Review the commits and file list brought in by the pull. Look first at files named in the error, then at related code, dependency manifests, lockfiles, configuration, migrations, and build scripts.
- Read the project’s setup instructions. Follow its documented dependency-installation and environment-configuration steps. Do not guess a package command from the language or use a generic install command that could alter dependency versions.
- Run the documented build and tests. Use the project’s prescribed commands and compare the first failing output with the error you saw when starting the app.
- Separate project failure from local state. If your team’s workflow allows it, check whether the issue also occurs from a clean checkout at the pulled commit. A failure reproduced there points toward the shared code or setup; a failure limited to your working copy makes local changes or configuration worth checking.
Use the first concrete error as a clue rather than treating every later message as a separate cause. A missing module, a changed configuration key, a compilation error, and a failing test suggest different parts of the setup or code to inspect. This is general troubleshooting practice, not a diagnosis supplied by Git itself.

An abort command is for an operation that is still underway; it is not a general undo for a completed pull. After completion, inspect the resulting history and local changes, then decide with your team whether to keep the integration, create a corrective commit, or move the branch back. Preserve any work you need before choosing a reset mode.

Git’s reset documentation describes materially different effects: git reset --hard resets tracked files and discards local changes, while the documented recovery example for git reset --merge keeps local changes. The manual also discusses ORIG_HEAD as recovery context. These details do not make any reset command risk-free or appropriate in every repository state; inspect the current status and the manual before using one. Avoid git reset --hard as reflexive first aid.
