A 403 response from APITemplate.io does not, by itself, reveal the cause. The official references available for its REST API and older image endpoint do not document a screenshot-specific 403 fix. Start by confirming which API version and endpoint your request actually uses; then check that version’s authentication and request requirements. Do not assume a missing or invalid key is the cause: the older reference associates an invalid key with 401.
Check the endpoint and API version first
APITemplate.io documents a current REST API using the https://rest.apitemplate.io/v2/ base and regional hosts. An older API reference describes a v1 image-creation endpoint. The paths and authentication details are version-specific, so first compare the exact URL in your failing request with the documentation for that endpoint. Do not combine v1 request details with a v2 URL.

- Record the full request URL, including its host, path, and version.
- Confirm whether the request goes to the documented REST API or to a direct image-generation URL.
- If you use a regional host, verify that it is the host specified for your integration.
Check authentication for that endpoint
The current REST API guide specifies an X-API-KEY request header. The older v1 reference also documents Authorization: Token [API_KEY]. Use the authentication method documented for the endpoint you are calling, rather than sending both methods or assuming one applies across versions.
- Verify that the key is present in the deployed environment, not only in a local configuration.
- Check that your client sends the header on the request that reaches APITemplate.io.
- Redact the key before sharing logs or a request sample.
The older reference labels an invalid key as 401. That is useful when interpreting a response, but it does not establish why a particular request returned 403.

Match the request method and body to the endpoint
For the older v1 image-creation endpoint, the reference specifies a POST request, a required template_id, and JSON data. Treat those as v1 requirements only. Check the current endpoint reference before applying them to a v2 request; the available information does not establish that the same request shape applies to every version.

Make sure your client follows redirects
The older v1 reference tells API clients to follow redirects. If your integration calls that endpoint and stops at a redirect instead of following it, enable redirect following in the client and retry. This is a version-specific check, not a documented explanation for every 403.

Inspect the response before changing integrations
Capture the actual response body alongside the status code. The official references describe some other statuses, including 401 and 429, but do not explain a screenshot-specific 403. A status alone is not enough to identify whether the problem lies in endpoint selection, request handling, or an access policy.

Troubleshoot by symptom
- The request receives 401: Check the key and the authentication method documented for the selected endpoint. The older reference identifies a wrong key as a 401 condition.
- The request receives 429: The current REST guide documents 429 for rate-limit excess. Check your request rate and the applicable API guidance.
- The request receives 403: The official references discussed here do not identify a screenshot-specific cause. Verify version, host, authentication method, request shape, and redirect handling as applicable, then use the response body and redacted request details when contacting support.
- You are considering direct image URLs: The integration overview documents GET-based direct URLs that do not require an API key in the URL itself. Switch only if that method suits your application; it is not presented as a way to bypass authorization or cure every 403.
