API Gateways in Microservices: What They Do, Tradeoffs, and How to Choose

An API gateway can simplify client access and centralize selected controls in microservices, but it adds latency, operational work, and an availability dependency. Learn when it fits and how gateway options differ.

An API gateway gives clients a centralized entry point to backend services, routing requests and applying selected shared controls. It can simplify a microservices architecture, but it is not mandatory for every system: it adds a network hop, an operational dependency, and another layer of policy to secure and maintain.

What is an API gateway in a microservices architecture?

An API gateway is a reverse proxy between API clients and backend services. It receives a request, routes it to the appropriate service, and returns the response. In a typical flow, the client calls the gateway, the gateway calls a selected backend, and the response travels back through the gateway. This can shield clients from changes in internal service locations or implementations. Microsoft describes the gateway as a centralized entry point and router; Google Cloud documents a flow in which an OpenAPI specification defines the public endpoint and backend.

Depending on the product and configuration, the gateway may also check credentials, enforce authentication or authorization policies, limit request rates, validate or transform requests, cache responses, and collect telemetry. These capabilities are implementation-specific, not guaranteed features of every gateway. The backend remains part of the security boundary: Google notes that backend access settings are defined by the backend implementation, not automatically secured by the gateway.

Why use an API gateway?

  • Reduce endpoint sprawl: Clients can use a stable, client-facing endpoint instead of tracking each service address.
  • Reduce coupling to backend topology: Teams can change service locations or implementations without requiring every client to learn those internal details.
  • Apply selected shared policies: A gateway can centralize controls such as throttling, request validation, or credential checks where consistent enforcement is useful.
  • Shape requests for client needs: Routing or aggregation can simplify client interactions in suitable designs, provided the gateway does not become a home for excessive application logic.

Centralization is useful only when the policies belong at that boundary and the added hop meets the workload’s performance and availability objectives. Microsoft recommends evaluating the latency impact of API policy logic and aligning gateway service-level objectives with workload objectives. Its architecture guidance also advises preferring platform-provided gateway and ingress options when they meet security and control needs, and using custom solutions when necessary flexibility is unavailable in built-in options.

Do microservices need an API gateway?

No. A gateway is a design choice, not a defining requirement of microservices. It is most helpful when clients would otherwise need to know about many backend endpoints, or when a team needs shared API controls at a managed boundary. A simpler system may not need a dedicated gateway, and a platform’s existing ingress or networking capabilities may be sufficient.

Decide based on concrete requirements. If you add one, account for the extra network hop, configuration that must follow service changes, capacity planning, and the gateway’s availability as a dependency. Keep business logic out of the gateway unless there is a clear reason to place it there; excessive edge logic can make routing and policy changes harder to govern.

What security and reliability work does a gateway require?

Use authentication controls, not API keys as identity

API keys can help meter or limit usage, but AWS explicitly cautions that keys should not be used for authentication. Its API Gateway documentation lists IAM/SigV4, Cognito bearer-token validation, and Lambda authorizers as authorization options for AWS REST APIs; those are AWS-specific examples, not universal requirements. Choose identity controls appropriate to the gateway and protect the backend as well as the public entry point. AWS explains the role of API keys and usage plans, while its security guidance describes API Gateway as a shared-responsibility service.

Design for failures and load

Plan how clients and backends behave under faults rather than treating the gateway as a cure for them. Depending on the API and workload, consider quotas and rate limits, retry policies, backend circuit breakers, load balancing, and exception handling. Monitor gateway resource usage and throughput, and use cache-hit ratios and sampled traces or logs where applicable. Measure performance and reliability against the workload’s own targets, not generic assumptions. Microsoft’s API Management guidance covers these reliability and monitoring considerations.

What is the difference between Kubernetes Gateway API and an API gateway?

Kubernetes Gateway API is a Kubernetes SIG-Network project that defines role-oriented resources for service networking. It is an interface that providers implement; it is not itself a gateway product or a complete API-management service. Some API gateways can be programmed through Gateway API, but adopting the Kubernetes interface does not automatically provide all the product capabilities associated with API management. The Kubernetes Gateway API project describes its resources and role-oriented model.

Ingress controllers and service-mesh ingress gateways can provide network entry and routing. They may not offer the same capabilities as a dedicated API gateway for web application firewall (WAF) protection, API productization, request transformation, or global routing. Choose an additional product only when those capabilities are actually required; compare the exact implementation rather than assuming every ingress or mesh has the same limitations. Microsoft discusses these distinctions in its gateway guidance.

How do I choose an API gateway?

Start with the API behavior and operational controls you need, then compare options against those requirements. A managed cloud API-management service, a self-hosted gateway, and Kubernetes Gateway API solve different problems and are not interchangeable categories.

Option What it provides Main tradeoff
Managed cloud API management Cloud-operated gateway and, depending on product, management plane and developer portal. Azure API Management supports routing, credential checks, quotas, transformations, optional caching, and telemetry; AWS API Gateway and Google Cloud API Gateway are other managed services with distinct integrations and capabilities. Feature sets and pricing differ. Verify required capabilities and costs for the intended region and traffic pattern rather than assuming parity. Azure API Management concepts, AWS API Gateway documentation, and Google Cloud API Gateway documentation describe their respective services.
Self-hosted gateway Azure API Management’s self-hosted gateway is a Linux-based Docker container that can run in Kubernetes or hybrid environments and be managed through Azure API Management. Deployment location is flexible, but the operator takes on local infrastructure and operational responsibilities. Microsoft documents the self-hosted gateway model.
Kubernetes Gateway API A standard set of Kubernetes resources for service networking, implemented by providers. It is an API/interface, not a full API-management product; available capabilities depend on the implementing provider. The project documentation explains its scope.
Ingress or service-mesh gateway Network entry and routing within a Kubernetes or service-mesh environment. Capabilities for WAF, API productization, transformations, and global routing vary; add a dedicated gateway only if requirements call for it. Microsoft’s guidance compares these roles.
