Apache HTTP Server 2.4.69 Fixes Security Issues, Including a mod_vhost_alias Stack Overflow

Apache HTTP Server 2.4.69 fixes CVE-2026-63292, a mod_vhost_alias stack overflow with a specific VirtualDocumentRoot and request-size configuration trigger. Here’s what administrators should check before upgrading.

Yes. Apache HTTP Server 2.4.69 fixes the mod_vhost_alias stack overflow tracked as CVE-2026-63292. The project identifies 2.4.69 as its latest stable release, released October 1, 2026, and recommends upgrading. Does Apache HTTP Server 2.4.69 fix the mod_vhost_alias stack overflow? Yes—but whether your server matches the flaw’s described trigger depends on its version and configuration.

What CVE-2026-63292 affects

Apache rates the mod_vhost_alias stack overflow as moderate severity and lists it as affecting Apache HTTP Server through 2.4.68. The issue is triggered by a remote HTTP request with a Host header longer than 8192 bytes when VirtualDocumentRoot uses a hostname format specifier and LimitRequestFieldSize is set above its default. Apache describes denial of service or potentially arbitrary code execution as possible outcomes. See the Apache HTTP Server 2.4 vulnerability list.

Am I affected by CVE-2026-63292?

Check the version and the relevant configuration together. A server running through 2.4.68 is within the listed affected range, but the described trigger also requires the hostname-format VirtualDocumentRoot setup and a raised LimitRequestFieldSize.

  • Installed version: Determine whether the server is Apache HTTP Server 2.4.68 or earlier.
  • Virtual host mapping: Check whether VirtualDocumentRoot uses a hostname format specifier.
  • Request field limit: Check whether LimitRequestFieldSize is configured above its default.

If all of these conditions apply, the configuration matches the trigger Apache describes. If one does not, that specific trigger is not established by the vulnerability description; that is not a substitute for applying the security update.

What changes in Apache HTTP Server 2.4.69?

The Apache project identifies 2.4.69 as its latest stable release as of October 1, 2026. Its September 29, 2026 announcement describes the release as a feature and bug-fix release and recommends that users of prior versions upgrade. The official security list says 2.4.69 fixes CVE-2026-63292.

The assignment title says the release fixes 20 flaws, but the official material cited here does not give a standalone aggregate count. The vulnerability list contains entries fixed in 2.4.69; the number 20 should not be treated as an independently verified total without counting those entries. Consult the Apache download page for the release announcement and change lists.

What to check before upgrading

Confirm APR and APR-Util compatibility

The release announcement specifies APR and APR-Util 1.5.x as minimum versions; some features may require 1.6.x. It also says the APR libraries must be upgraded for all features to operate correctly. Check the versions in the target environment and follow the release announcement’s compatibility guidance.

Check modules used with threaded MPMs

If the deployment uses a threaded Multi-Processing Module (MPM), confirm that every module used with it is thread-safe. This includes third-party modules, not only components maintained with Apache HTTP Server.

Account for the end of the 2.2.x branch

The project states that Apache HTTP Server 2.2.x is end of life and will receive no further activity, including security patches. A server still on 2.2.x needs a migration plan to a supported release, rather than treating the move as a routine point-version update.
