Town panchayats in Prayagraj, Kaushambi, Pratapgarh and Fatehpur districts have been directed to intensify sanitation work and inspect drinking-water infrastructure under a time-bound plan reported by Hindustan Times on October 2, 2026. The instructions include checks of overhead tanks and pipelines, ward-wise waste-management reporting, worker protections and deadlines for cleaning roads and drains. The report records directions—not completed work or water-test results.
What the plan covers
Prayagraj divisional commissioner Lokesh M. issued the directions after a review meeting with town-panchayat executive officers, according to Hindustan Times’ October 2, 2026 report. The four districts covered are Prayagraj, Kaushambi, Pratapgarh and Fatehpur. The report describes the directives but does not reproduce the underlying government order.

Sanitation, roads and drains
- Town panchayats were told to identify sanitation black spots and submit reports by October 2, 2026.
- Drain cleaning was to be completed by the following Thursday. The report does not specify a year for this relative deadline.
- Mud, silt and overgrown vegetation were to be cleared from main roads within three days, and sanitation work across entire town areas was to be completed by October 10.
- Anti-larval spraying and fogging were also directed.
Waste collection and disposal reporting
By October 3, town panchayats were asked to submit ward-wise information on door-to-door garbage collection, waste segregation and scientific disposal. They were also to provide photographs showing material recovery facility (MRF) operations. The report does not give collection or segregation rates, or confirm whether the submissions were made.

When are drinking-water inspections due?
Overhead water tanks were to be inspected on October 4 for chlorine dosage and water quality. Officials were also directed to identify damaged or contaminated pipelines. Photographs of tank inspections were due that evening, while detailed pipeline-inspection reports were due within 10 days. The article does not specify the year for that relative deadline.

No chlorine readings, laboratory results or other water-quality measurements are included in the report. The announced inspections therefore do not establish whether water in any town panchayat is safe or unsafe to drink.
Worker protections and public-space measures
- Sanitation workers were to use gloves, jackets and other protective equipment and be covered by insurance.
- Street vendors and roadside vending zones were to receive dustbins and proper disposal arrangements within 15 days.
- Fresh encroachments on ponds were to be removed immediately; older encroachments were to be addressed according to rules.
- By October 6, officials were to submit a list of town panchayats with many ponds and an action schedule.
- Kanshi Ram Awas Yojana colonies were to be kept clean, with occupancy limited to eligible beneficiaries.
- Where possible, safe shelters were to be arranged for stray cattle, and reflective paint or collars used to make them more visible to motorists.
What is—and is not—known about follow-through
The October 2 report is an account of instructions and deadlines. It provides no subsequent compliance update, inspection findings, sanitation performance statistics or water-test results. Any claim that the work was completed, or that local drinking water passed or failed testing, would require evidence beyond the report.
