On a Mac, Apple also builds multiple malware defenses into macOS. Consider a third-party suite when you can identify a specific extra feature or management need, then verify that the product provides it and performs well on your operating system.
What built-in protection actually does
Windows: Microsoft Defender and Windows Security
On Windows 10 and Windows 11, Microsoft Defender Antivirus is part of a broader set of protections, not just a scanner that checks files when you run it. Microsoft documents real-time monitoring of files and programs as they are accessed or launched, cloud-delivered protection, and security-intelligence updates through Windows Update. Windows Security also includes ransomware-related protection. Controlled folder access can prevent unknown apps from changing files in protected folders. Availability and behavior depend on Windows version and configuration, so check the controls on your own PC rather than assuming every feature is enabled.
Windows web and app safeguards
Microsoft’s reputation-based protection and SmartScreen can warn about malicious sites and downloads, including malicious-site and tech-support-scam warnings when using Microsoft Edge. Some related features have narrower availability: Windows 11 phishing protection covers certain password-entry and password-reuse cases, while Microsoft says it is not available in Windows 10. Smart App Control is limited to eligible new Windows 11 installs. Microsoft documents these distinctions in its App & browser control guide.

Mac: several layers, not one scanner
Apple describes macOS protection as a combination of measures. Gatekeeper and notarization help prevent unsafe apps from launching; XProtect detects and blocks known malware and can remediate malware that has run. Apple says XProtect uses YARA signatures, updates them automatically independent of system updates, and checks for updates daily by default. On macOS 10.15 and later, it checks apps when first launched, after an app changes, and when signatures update. Apple also describes behavioral analysis for unknown malware and remediation delivered through system data and security updates. These are Apple’s descriptions of its own platform, not independent head-to-head lab results. See the Apple macOS Security Guide.
Apple’s guide also says that on macOS 15 or later, third-party developers can receive Endpoint Security API events when a user bypasses Gatekeeper and insights into XProtect detections. That describes a way supplementary software can integrate with macOS; it is not evidence that every Mac user needs another antivirus product.

What the latest cited Windows test says—and what it does not
In AV-TEST’s January–February 2026 consumer evaluation, Microsoft Defender Antivirus (Consumer) 4.18 scored 6.0 out of 6 in protection, performance, and usability on Windows 11 Professional (English), 64-bit. The report recorded 100% zero-day protection in each of January and February and 100% detection of its recent widespread-malware reference set in both months. Those are results in that lab’s test, not a promise of perfect detection in everyday use.
AV-TEST evaluated 16 home-user security products continuously during January and February 2026, using default settings and the then-current publicly available versions; products could update and query cloud services. The results are specific to that period, platform, product version, and setup. They do not establish that Defender will lead every future test or that products tested on other systems can be ranked against it from unrelated reports. Read AV-TEST’s full report.

When built-in protection is a sensible choice
Stick with the built-in option if you use a currently supported operating system, keep it and its security updates current, and do not have a specific need that the built-in tools do not meet. For Windows, check Windows Security to confirm protection is active and review the controls relevant to you, such as real-time protection and Controlled folder access. For a Mac, keep macOS and security updates current and pay attention to app-launch warnings rather than bypassing them casually.
Built-in antivirus cannot make risky behavior harmless. Be cautious with unexpected attachments and downloads, use reputable software sources, and avoid dismissing security warnings without understanding them. Protection also depends on current software and settings; an old or unsupported operating system is not made safe merely by installing another scanner.

When a third-party suite may be worth considering
A paid product is worth evaluating when you can name the capability, device coverage, or management feature you need and confirm that the specific product supplies it for your system. Examples of needs to investigate include protections or controls beyond the built-in features, or managing security across several devices. This comparison does not verify which current products offer particular extras, supported-device limits, or subscription terms, so check those details directly with the vendor before buying.

What happens to Defender if you install another antivirus?
Microsoft says a compatible third-party antivirus automatically turns Microsoft Defender Antivirus off. Check Windows Security to see which antivirus is active; do not assume two full real-time antivirus products will normally operate as equal primary scanners. This automatic behavior applies to compatible antivirus software, and Microsoft’s documentation is the place to confirm current Windows details: Virus & threat protection in Windows Security.
