An antivirus engine identifies and contains malicious software by combining several techniques: known-threat signatures, heuristic analysis, real-time behavior monitoring and, in some products, cloud-assisted or machine-learning review. It can block many attacks, but it cannot guarantee that a device will never be infected. Effective protection also requires software updates, cautious handling of files and links, backups and appropriate organizational controls.
What an antivirus engine actually does
An antivirus engine is the detection and response component inside security software. It examines files, downloads, running processes and other activity, compares what it sees with threat intelligence and looks for behavior associated with malware. When it reaches a sufficiently confident verdict, the product may block execution, quarantine the item or otherwise contain it. NIST defines the purpose broadly as preventing or containing malware incidents.

How detection works
Known-pattern signatures
A signature is a pattern associated with previously identified malicious code. The engine compares scanned content with those patterns, making signatures highly useful against known threats. Their weakness is that a brand-new or substantially modified sample may not match an existing signature. CISA recommends keeping antivirus current and warns that signature-only detection cannot adequately address every new or advanced threat.
Heuristic analysis
Heuristics look for suspicious characteristics rather than requiring an exact match. Examples can include an unusual combination of file properties, code structure or actions associated with malware. Microsoft documents generic and heuristic detection as complementary methods in its security products. Heuristics improve coverage for previously unseen samples, but aggressive rules can produce false positives and still cannot identify every threat.
#1 Best Overall
- THREAT DETECTION – Stay one step ahead. Suspicious links, risky sites, viruses, and scams, caught automatically before they reach you.
- PERSONAL INFO PROTECTION – Keep your personal info safer. Identity monitoring watches for your exposed info and tells you what to do about it.
- SECURE CONNECTIONS – Just a few easy clicks, and we'll automatically protect your info on public Wi‑Fi, every time you connect.
- GUIDED ACTION – Know what matters and what to do next. Clear alerts and simple guidance make it easy to take action.
- MORE THAN ANTIVIRUS – Scam protection, identity monitoring, VPN, web protection, and antivirus work together to protect you, all in one place.
Real-time behavior monitoring
Behavior monitoring watches activity as it happens instead of waiting for a scheduled scan. In Microsoft’s implementation, monitoring observes process, file and service activity in real time and can flag suspicious actions that do not match a known signature. This is a Microsoft feature description, not a guarantee that every vendor uses the same scope or controls.
Cloud-assisted analysis
Some products use a local client together with a cloud service. Microsoft’s documentation describes metadata queries and, depending on configuration, sample submission for additional cloud analysis when the local client cannot confidently classify a file. Availability, network dependence, administrator settings and privacy implications vary. Review sample-submission controls before enabling a product on sensitive systems; not every antivirus engine uploads files.
What happens after a detection
- Inspection: The engine scans a file, process or activity when it is accessed, created, downloaded or executed.
- Classification: It compares the item with signatures and threat intelligence, applies heuristic rules and evaluates behavior; some products also request cloud analysis.
- Decision: The product assigns a risk verdict. Uncertain items may receive additional analysis or a warning rather than an immediate deletion.
- Containment: Depending on the product and settings, the item can be blocked, quarantined or otherwise prevented from running.
- Recovery: You review the alert, restore a legitimate file only when its source is trusted, update the security software and investigate related activity if compromise is possible.
Why antivirus is still needed
CISA describes current antivirus as an important protection against known malicious threats and recommends it for computers and mobile devices on home networks. Its industrial-control-system guidance says:
“When properly deployed and up-to-date, antivirus software is an important part of a defense-in-depth strategy to guard against malicious software (malware) in industrial control systems.”
That quotation applies specifically to industrial control systems. For ordinary home and business devices, the same defense-in-depth principle means antivirus is one protective layer, not the entire security plan. Keeping its engine and threat intelligence updated helps it recognize newly catalogued threats and receive product fixes.
Rank #2
- ONGOING PROTECTION Install protection for up to 3 PCs, Macs, iOS & Android devices - A card with product key code will be mailed to you (select ‘Download’ option for instant activation code)
- TOP-PERFORMING VPN Faster speeds, more server locations, and greater connection control to protect your privacy across all your devices, including Smart TVs.
- ADVANCED SCAM PROTECTION Help spot hidden scams online. With the built-in Genie AI assistant, you’ll never wonder if a message or email is suspicious again.
- REAL-TIME PROTECTION Advanced security protects against existing and emerging malware threats, including ransomware and viruses, and it won’t slow down your device performance.
- DARK WEB MONITORING Identity thieves can buy or sell your information on websites and forums. We search the dark web and notify you should your information be found.
What antivirus cannot do
- It cannot promise zero infections. New, polymorphic or carefully targeted malware may evade signatures and other detections.
- It cannot replace patching. Operating-system and application updates close vulnerabilities that malware may exploit.
- It cannot make unsafe actions safe. A user can still disclose credentials, approve a malicious macro or follow a fraudulent link.
- It cannot substitute for backups. Offline or otherwise protected backups are essential when ransomware or destructive malware succeeds.
- It cannot remove every organizational risk. Businesses and industrial environments also need access controls, segmentation, logging, incident response and configuration management.
How to compare antivirus protection
There is no current independent ranking or protection percentage established by the available evidence, so choose by capability and fit rather than an unsupported “best” label.
| What to compare | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Compatibility | Does it support your operating system, device types and edition, including the versions you actually maintain? |
| Detection layers | Does it combine signatures with heuristics and real-time behavior monitoring? |
| Cloud analysis | Is cloud-delivered review available, and can you control sample submission and related privacy settings? |
| Updates | How are engine, software and threat-intelligence updates delivered, and can administrators enforce them? |
| Management | Does the product provide the reporting, policy controls and alert workflow needed for a home user, small team or regulated organization? |
| Terms and cost | Which features are included in the current plan, and are prices, renewals and regional availability clearly stated by the vendor? |
A practical protection checklist
- Keep antivirus enabled and allow its engine and intelligence updates to install.
- Keep the operating system, browsers, applications and firmware patched.
- Use real-time protection where the device and workload support it.
- Treat unexpected attachments, downloads, macros and links as untrusted until verified.
- Maintain tested backups that malware cannot easily rewrite or delete.
- For organizations, apply least privilege, network separation, centralized monitoring and an incident-response plan.
- Check cloud-analysis and sample-submission settings before deploying protection on confidential systems.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do signature updates still matter if an antivirus product uses behavior monitoring?
Yes. Signatures provide efficient, high-confidence recognition of known malware, while behavior and heuristic methods extend coverage to unfamiliar or modified samples.
Should I allow cloud sample submission?
It depends on your privacy and compliance requirements. Cloud review can help classify uncertain files, but submission settings determine what data leaves the device; inspect the vendor’s controls before enabling it.
Does installing antivirus make a device safe?
No. Antivirus is one layer. Patching, careful handling of links and files, protected backups and—where relevant—organizational controls remain necessary.
