Which protection should you turn on?
These features address different situations. A phone may identify a caller, ask an unknown caller why they are calling before it rings, silence a call, move it to a separate list, or warn about suspicious behavior during a call. Those actions are not interchangeable: screening unknown numbers can affect legitimate callers, while spam identification depends on the carrier or service recognizing the call.

- Unknown-caller screening or filtering applies to numbers the phone does not recognize, not necessarily numbers known to be fraudulent.
- Spam identification uses carrier or service data to label likely spam. Depending on the setting, the phone may warn, silence, or filter the call.
- Scam-pattern detection can look for suspicious behavior during a call or in supported app notifications. It is limited by device, location and feature eligibility.
Use these as layers, not proof that a call is safe. If a caller asks for money, credentials, a verification code or urgent action, end the call and contact the organization through a number or channel you already trust.
iPhone: screen unknown callers and filter carrier-identified spam
On current iPhone software, open Settings → Apps → Phone. Apple’s iPhone call controls guide documents settings for screening or silencing unknown callers and filtering calls. Menu presentation can differ by iOS version.

Choose how unknown callers are handled
Apple documents choices including Never, Ask Reason for Calling and Silence. Ask Reason for Calling prompts an unknown caller for their name and reason before the phone rings. Silence sends the call to voicemail. If you need calls from new customers, delivery drivers or medical offices, screening may be less disruptive than silencing every number not in your contacts.
Separate unknown calls from spam
For a separate list of missed calls and voicemails from numbers you do not know, go to Settings → Apps → Phone → Call Filtering and enable Unknown Callers. For calls identified as spam or fraud by your carrier, enable Spam in the same area. Apple says carrier-identified spam calls are silenced, sent to voicemail and moved to the Spam list; that behavior depends on the carrier identifying the call.

Check caller identification sources
Open Settings → Apps → Phone → Call Blocking & Identification to review caller-identification options. Identification can come from Apple Business Connect, supported carriers and supported call-identification apps. Save important numbers in Contacts if you want them recognized as known callers. Apple’s unknown-call guidance notes that call screening is unavailable while roaming and turns off for 24 hours after a call to emergency services.
Pixel: enable spam warnings, Call Screen and eligible Scam Detection
Pixel has three distinct call protections. Google documents their settings in its Pixel spam and scam detection overview, Phone app Scam Detection help and Call Screen guide.

Caller ID and spam warnings
In the Phone app, tap More → Settings → Caller ID and spam. Google says caller ID and spam protection is on by default in the documented app flow. The optional Filter spam calls control can suppress missed-call and voicemail notifications while leaving filtered calls in call history. Google notes that call information may be sent to Google for caller ID and spam protection.
Automatic Call Screen
Look in the Phone app under More → Settings → Spam and Call Screen or Call Screen → Call Screen; the exact path varies. On supported devices and in supported countries, Call Screen can screen selected categories of calls, including spam, possibly faked numbers and first-time callers on supported Pixel generations. Review the available protection levels on the phone rather than assuming every option appears on every Pixel.

Scam Detection during a call
Scam Detection is a separate feature that can alert you to scam-like behavior during calls. Google lists availability for Pixel 6 and later in the US, and Pixel 9 and later in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, India, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Singapore, Spain and the UK. It also lists Pixel 9a and Pixel 10a in the US. An eligible SIM and presence in a supported country are required, so a supported model alone may not be enough.

Google explicitly cautions: “Not all scam calls can be detected. Scam Detection is not 100% accurate and scammers constantly change their tactics.” See the eligibility and limitation details.

For scam texts and supported app notifications
Call settings do not cover every message threat. Google documents spam detection in Google Messages and a separate Scam Detection feature for supported app notifications in eligible regions and languages. Google says notification detection runs in a secure isolated environment and message content is not sent to Google unless the user chooses to share it; this is Google’s description of its privacy behavior, not an independent audit. Samsung’s relevant settings are documented on US support pages, so availability elsewhere can differ. Carrier and device support can also affect whether Smart Call appears. See Samsung’s Smart Call guide.
Smart Call caller ID and spam protection
In the Phone app, open More options → Settings → Caller ID and spam protection. Depending on what your device and carrier support, choose to block all identified spam and scam calls or only high-risk scam calls. Samsung notes that some carriers require a system update for Smart Call.

AI Scam Detection on newer software
Samsung’s guide limits AI Scam Detection to Galaxy phones running Android 16 with One UI 8.5 or higher. Where available, Samsung says it is on by default. Review it in Phone → More options → Settings → Scam detection; tone and vibration alerts can be customized. An alert gives you a chance to decide whether to answer or block—it is not a guarantee that a call is fraudulent or safe. See Samsung’s AI Scam Detection guide.
Unknown-caller screening is a separate setting
Samsung also documents automatic screening for unknown callers. It is distinct from Smart Call’s caller identification and spam blocking, and from AI Scam Detection during a call. Consult Samsung’s call screening instructions if you want unknown callers screened rather than relying only on spam identification.

What to do if a setting is missing or a call still gets through
- Check the software and app first. Update the operating system and Phone app, then search Settings for the feature name if the documented path does not match your menus.
- Check country, carrier and model eligibility. This is especially important for Pixel Scam Detection and Samsung Smart Call or AI Scam Detection.
- Save numbers you need to recognize. Add trusted doctors, schools, work contacts and service providers to Contacts; filtering unknown callers can otherwise hide or silence useful calls.
- Use the call history and voicemail. A filtered or silenced call may still be listed or sent to voicemail rather than blocked from reaching you entirely.
- Treat alerts as clues, not authentication. A displayed name or a call that passes screening does not establish who is really calling. Verify unexpected requests independently using a known official channel.
