On September 30, 2026, it announced that Claude for Government was generally available to federal and state agencies. Neither announcement shows that every agency—or every branch—has adopted Claude.
What “all government arms” means
The phrase refers first to Anthropic’s August 12, 2025 offer to eligible organizations in the federal executive, legislative and judicial branches. That was a time-limited offer, not evidence of universal deployment. A later announcement, dated September 30, 2026, said Claude for Government had become generally available to federal and state agencies after a public beta that began in July. Anthropic’s current product page also describes state and local governments and qualifying public-sector organizations as potential customers.

These are availability and eligibility statements from Anthropic, not an agency-by-agency adoption count. The company has not established in these announcements how many agencies use Claude or whether it is deployed across all branches. Anthropic’s 2025 announcement and its September 2026 announcement describe different initiatives and should not be read as one continuous price or deployment claim.

What Claude for Government offers
Claude for Government is an administered software service. Anthropic describes desktop workflows using files, skills, plugins and projects, with examples such as drafting memos, reviewing requests for proposals and handling casework. Claude Code is intended for software development and modernization work. The September 2026 announcement describes access to capabilities comparable to commercial offerings alongside public-sector controls.
#1 Best Overall
Anthropic’s product page says the service supports Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) and FIPS 199 High Impact data. Those statements do not give agencies blanket permission to put any information into Claude: each agency must apply its own authorizations, contracts and data-handling rules. In particular, Anthropic identifies AWS Bedrock GovCloud for Department of Defense Impact Level 4 and 5 use, and says Claude for Government running through Vertex AI is not an IL5 environment. Anthropic’s government product and procurement documentation describes the current distinctions.
Choose the route that matches the workload
“Claude” can refer to services delivered through different providers and authorization boundaries. The route matters as much as the model: an agency should confirm that the specific service, cloud environment and workload are approved for the data it plans to use.

| Route | What Anthropic says it supports | What an agency should verify |
|---|---|---|
| Claude for Government | Dedicated government offering described as FedRAMP High authorized, with desktop workflows and government administration, identity, audit and usage controls. | Eligibility, permitted data, enabled models and seat tier, procurement terms, and authorization for the intended use. |
| Claude through AWS Bedrock in AWS GovCloud | Anthropic identifies this route for FedRAMP High and DoD IL4/IL5 workloads; its data guidance points to it for ITAR-controlled data and IL5 use. | Whether the agency has the required AWS environment and whether the specific model and service are authorized for the workload. |
| Claude through Google Vertex AI Assured Workloads | Anthropic identifies a FedRAMP High environment. Its government model guidance says Claude for Government inference routes through Vertex AI’s FedRAMP High-authorized environment. | Whether Vertex is within the agency’s approved boundary and the chosen offering meets the workload’s classification and contract terms. |
| Claude Enterprise or the direct Anthropic API | Anthropic says these options are not FedRAMP authorized today. Enterprise may suit government work that does not require FedRAMP authorization. | Whether the work requires a particular federal authorization and whether the product configuration is appropriate for the data and contract. |
FedRAMP authorization applies to a defined service and environment; it should not be treated as a general approval for every Claude access route. Anthropic’s government documentation distinguishes the government service from Enterprise and the direct API. Confirm the current authorization and model availability against the agency’s requirements before procurement or use.
Pricing: distinguish the old offer from current terms
Anthropic said its August 2025 package for eligible organizations across the three federal branches would cost $1 for one year. That was a dated offer, not the current general price for Claude for Government.

In its September 30, 2026 announcement, Anthropic described Claude for Government billing as prepaid usage with no per-seat fee and a hard not-to-exceed cap; specific pricing is available by contacting sales. The product page also describes procurement directly from Anthropic or through Carahsoft. These are vendor-stated terms, and procurement and usage details may vary by arrangement. Anthropic’s 2025 announcement separately said the Department of Defense selected Claude through an agreement with a $200 million ceiling with its Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office, and that 10,000 Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory scientists and researchers used Claude daily. Both figures are the company’s claims, not independent totals or adoption statistics.
Models and seat tiers
Anthropic’s government model guidance, updated during the week of October 3, 2026, says Lite seats include Sonnet and Haiku but not Opus; Standard seats include all available models, including Opus. It also says organizations will move to an updated Claude for Government desktop offering by October 4, 2026. Because that transition date is immediately after the guidance’s update, agencies should verify the current desktop offering and model access rather than assume the transition status. See Anthropic’s model availability guidance.

What the announcements do—and do not—establish
Anthropic is trying to make Claude available through routes suited to different public-sector security and procurement needs, and it has named federal, state and local government as prospective customers. Availability is not proof of adoption, an authorization for every workload, or a government endorsement. The practical question for an agency is whether its selected route, data boundary, models and contract meet the requirements of the particular work.
