Anthropic says its updated Usage Policy will prohibit sustained and needless abusive or cruel behavior toward its models, with the change taking effect November 12, 2026. The company describes Claude’s ability to end rare conversations with persistently abusive users as the primary enforcement mechanism. It says ordinary frustration, pushback, dark creative themes, and model testing or research are outside the new prohibition.

What Anthropic’s policy update changes

Anthropic announced the Usage Policy update on October 8, 2026. Its announcement says the policy adds a prohibition on “sustained and needless abusive or cruel behavior toward our models.” The effective date is November 12, 2026. Anthropic’s announcement describes the focus as extreme cases in which users repeatedly behave cruelly toward models with no discernible purpose.

The wording matters: the announcement frames the rule around conduct that is both sustained and needless, rather than a general ban on criticism, disagreement, or unpleasant subject matter.

What the announcement says is not covered

Anthropic says the new prohibition does not cover common user frustration or pushback. It also excludes dark creative themes and model testing or research. Those examples distinguish ordinary interaction and legitimate uses from the extreme, repeated cruelty the company says it is targeting.

Can Claude end a chat if I criticize it or get frustrated?

Anthropic says common frustration and pushback are outside the new prohibition. Its stated target is extreme, repeated cruelty without a discernible purpose—not simply a user criticizing Claude or disagreeing with an answer.

Anthropic also says Claude can end rare conversations with persistently abusive users on Claude.ai and Claude Code, and calls that ability the “primary enforcement mechanism.” The announcement does not provide a specific trigger threshold, procedural details, or statistics on how often conversations are ended. Its description is Anthropic’s account of the policy and its enforcement, not an independent assessment of how the rule is applied.
