Angular NG8117: How to Fix an Uninvoked Function in Text Interpolation

NG8117 flags a function reference where Angular interpolation expects a call. Learn how to invoke the function and, if needed, suppress the diagnostic in tsconfig.json.

Angular’s NG8117 diagnostic means a text interpolation refers to a function without calling it. If you want to display the function’s return value, add parentheses: change {{ getValue }} to {{ getValue() }}. The diagnostic appears when strictTemplates is enabled, and Angular documents no additional requirement for this check.

What NG8117 means

NG8117 detects an uninvoked function in text interpolation. A template expression such as {{ getValue }} refers to the function itself; it does not call the function to obtain the value it returns. As a result, the interpolation will not work as expected.

Angular describes the rule as: “Functions in text interpolation should be invoked to return a value.” Angular’s NG8117 documentation shows a component method named getValue() that returns 'value' and flags a template that writes {{ getValue }}.

How to fix NG8117

Call the function in the interpolation when the intended text is its return value:

{{ getValue() }}

The parentheses invoke getValue, so Angular can use the returned value for the interpolation. The issue is the difference between a function reference and a function call:

  • {{ getValue }} refers to the function without invoking it.
  • {{ getValue() }} invokes the function and interpolates its result.

When does Angular report NG8117?

Angular’s extended diagnostics require strictTemplates to be enabled. The NG8117 documentation lists no additional prerequisite for this diagnostic. The page does not specify the Angular versions that emit NG8117 or when it was introduced.

Can you suppress NG8117?

Yes. Angular documents a setting in tsconfig.json that suppresses this check:

    "extendedDiagnostics": {
      "checks": {
        "uninvokedFunctionInTextInterpolation": "suppress"
      }
    }
  }
}

This setting prevents the diagnostic from being emitted; it does not call the function or make its return value appear in the template. If the interpolation is meant to display that result, fix the expression by invoking the function.
