Swipe down and tap the indicator to see which app or service is using—or recently used—the sensor. The dot signals access, not malicious intent, but it gives you a useful starting point if the activity seems unexpected.
What the green dot means
Android’s platform guidance says an icon appears in the status bar when an app accesses the microphone or camera on a device running Android 12 or higher. Google’s user help describes the indicator as green and located at the top right of the screen. The exact presentation and settings labels can vary by manufacturer and device.

The indicator tells you that a sensor was accessed. It does not tell you why, whether the access was appropriate, or what the app did with any captured audio or video. A video-call app using the camera during a call is expected; the same access when you are not using that feature may be worth checking.

- When the green indicator appears, swipe down from the top of the screen to open the notification shade or Quick Settings.
- Tap the indicator to see which app or service is using the camera or microphone. On supported devices, tap it again to open controls for managing permissions.
- If the indicator is gone, check your device’s Privacy Dashboard for recent permission activity.
These steps follow Google’s Android help guidance. If the indicator, labels, or menus look different, search Settings for “Privacy,” “Privacy Dashboard,” or “Permission manager”; manufacturers can change the interface.

Why the indicator may remain briefly
A dot that stays visible just after you stop recording or leave a call does not necessarily mean the sensor is still active. Android’s platform documentation treats camera and microphone use as recent for a 15-second window. Active and recent access can overlap in the display, and when multiple apps accessed a sensor within that window, the dialog may show only one as the recent source. The indicator is therefore a prompt to investigate, not a complete forensic record.
Review the permission-use timeline
The Privacy Dashboard helps you compare an app’s sensor access with what you were doing at the time. Google documents a history of the last 24 hours on Android 12 and the last seven days on Android 13. Those windows are version-specific; check your device’s dashboard for the history it provides rather than assuming the same period on every Android version or manufacturer build.

Restrict unexpected camera or microphone access
Change an app’s permission
From the indicator’s permission controls, or through your phone’s app settings, change the relevant Camera or Microphone permission. Depending on the Android version and device, options may include allowing access only while the app is in use, asking each time, or denying access. Denying permission can stop features that rely on that sensor from working.

Turn off sensor access system-wide
Supported Android 12-or-later devices also provide system-wide Camera access and Microphone access controls, commonly in Quick Settings or Privacy settings. Turn the relevant control off to block access across apps, then turn it back on when you need those features. Availability and labels vary by device, and disabling a sensor can interrupt camera, video-call, voice-recording, or other functions that use it.

Use the app’s purpose and the timing as context. Access during a video call, voice message, or recording is usually consistent with the feature in use. If an unfamiliar app appears, or a familiar app accesses a sensor at an unexpected time, review its permission and consider changing or denying it. The green dot alone cannot establish spying or other wrongdoing.
