Get the phone out of the water and turn it off. If it is wet, do not charge it or use external heat to dry it. Google gives these steps for Pixel phones; for another Android model, follow that manufacturer’s instructions.
What to do immediately
- Remove the phone from the water and turn it off. Google lists these as the first actions for a Pixel phone that falls in water. If the phone is already off, leave it off.
- Dry the outside gently. Use a soft cloth, as Google advises for Pixel phones. Do not try to dry the inside by probing a port or taking the phone apart.
- Leave it on a flat surface at room temperature. Google says to let a wet Pixel finish drying this way. Its guidance does not give one drying time that applies to every exposure or device.
These directions are from Google’s “Help prevent water damage to your Pixel phone” page, reviewed October 7, 2026. Other Android manufacturers may specify different procedures, so check the support guidance for your exact model.

What not to do
- Do not charge the phone while it is wet. Google warns that charging with moisture present can cause fire, electric shock, injury, or property damage. See its Pixel safety and regulatory guide.
- Do not use an external heat source. Google explicitly warns against using one to dry a wet Pixel. Avoid treating heat as a shortcut.
- Do not put anything into a wet charging port. Google’s Pixel port-warning instructions say not to probe the port. They do not recommend inserting a tool or cloth to remove moisture.
If the phone shows a liquid or debris warning
For a Pixel showing “Liquid or debris in USB port” or an “Unplug charger” message, Google says to disconnect the charger. If the port or cable is wet, turn off the phone and let it dry on a flat surface at room temperature; do not insert anything into the port. If the warning remains for two hours or more, contact Google support. The exact steps are in Google’s “Fix ‘Unplug charger’ or ‘Liquid or debris’ message” guidance.

When to seek repair help
Contact the phone’s manufacturer or a qualified repair provider if it remains damaged or does not work normally. Google advises Pixel owners not to attempt self-repair and directs them to customer service and repair options. Ask a provider whether it can assess liquid damage on your model and what the repair could mean for stored data; a drying step is not a promise that the phone or its data can be recovered.
