The best Android TV device for a smart-home upgrade depends on what you need beyond streaming. Google TV Streamer (4K) is the clearest fit if you want a Google Home, Matter and Thread hub; NVIDIA SHIELD TV Pro is better suited to USB expansion, local media, advanced audio and gaming. If you are replacing your television, a model with Google TV built in may make a separate streamer unnecessary.
Which Android TV device fits your needs?
There is no evidence-based way to name five definitive Android TV streaming devices across regions and use cases. The available official specifications support two distinct add-on streamers and the option of a television with Google TV built in. Treat these as use-case choices, not a universal ranking.

Google TV Streamer (4K): best fit for Google Home, Matter and Thread
Google lists the Streamer as an Android TV OS device with 4K HDR output, 32 GB of storage, 4 GB of memory, Gigabit Ethernet, Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 5.1. Its built-in Thread border router and Matter support make it the most directly relevant option here for someone who wants a streamer to also serve as part of a Google Home setup. NVIDIA SHIELD TV Pro: best fit for expansion and advanced media
NVIDIA’s specifications list Android 11 with Android TV, Gigabit Ethernet, two USB 3.0 ports, expandable storage and GeForce NOW support. For an audio system that depends on passthrough, NVIDIA lists Dolby TrueHD, DTS-X and DTS-HD among the supported formats. These features make the Pro a more natural match for buyers who want to connect peripherals, expand storage or build a more involved media setup than a basic streaming stick typically allows. When a Google TV television is the simpler upgrade
If you are shopping for a new television, a separate streaming box may be redundant: Google’s device catalog includes televisions with Google TV built in from Hisense, Philips, Sony and TCL. That catalog establishes that these options exist, but it does not compare their panels, sizes or picture quality. Choose a TV based on screen size and display characteristics as well as its built-in software, and check the exact model and regional availability with its manufacturer.
Check compatibility before you buy
For 4K and HDR playback
- Google says a display must support HDCP 1.3 or higher for its streaming devices; HDCP 2.2 is required for 4K.
- For 4K content, Google specifies a 4K-capable display and an internet connection of at least 20 Mbps.
- HDR playback also requires an HDR-capable display.
These are Google’s stated requirements; they do not guarantee that every app, title or network condition will deliver 4K or HDR. Review Google’s device requirements and confirm that your TV and the rest of the connection chain support the formats you want.

Why this is a use-case guide, not a top-five ranking
A meaningful top-five list would require comparable, current specifications across five distinct add-on streamers and consistent consideration of price, availability, smart-home features, media support and support horizon. That comparison is not established here. The strongest grounded choices are therefore the Streamer for its listed Google Home, Matter and Thread features, SHIELD TV Pro for its expansion and media capabilities, and a built-in Google TV television for buyers replacing their display.
