Android Trackers Have a Network Problem Apple’s Find My Solved Years Ago

A small 2025 study measured more and more accurate Apple Find My reports than Google Find My Device reports on its test routes, while Google’s reports arrived sooner.

Android Bluetooth trackers can help you find lost items, but their usefulness depends on how often nearby phones detect and report them. A small 2025 study found that Apple’s Find My network produced five to six times as many location reports as Google’s Find My Device network—now called Find Hub—and more accurate locations on the routes tested. Google reports arrived sooner, though, and the study does not prove that every Android tracker performs worse everywhere.

Why a tracker can stop updating

A Bluetooth tag does not usually send its own location to you over the internet. Instead, nearby compatible phones detect the tag and relay its location through a finding network. If few participating phones pass near a lost tag—or their network participation is limited—the location may be sparse, delayed, or unavailable.

That means a tag’s performance depends not only on its hardware, but also on the finding network around it. Google describes Find Hub as a crowdsourced network of Android devices. Apple says its Find My network includes “hundreds of millions of Apple devices around the world”; that scale figure is Apple’s own description, not an independent device count. What the 2025 comparison found

The strongest direct comparison available is a peer-reviewed, small-scale study published in 2025. Across its evaluated routes, the authors reported five to six times more location reports from Apple Find My than from Google’s Find My Device network, along with consistently more accurate locations. Google’s locations were more current, arriving faster for retrieval. The study, “Okay Google, Where’s My Tracker? Security, Privacy, and Performance Evaluation of Google’s Find My Device Network”

Walking-route results

On the study’s walking route, the researchers recorded these results. They describe the comparison as small-scale; the numbers are specific to that route and test setup, not service guarantees.

Measure Google Find My Device (now Find Hub) Apple Find My
Location reports recorded 242 1,218
Median actual location accuracy 49.08 m 33.13 m
Average delay from location to retrieval 78.05 seconds 1,244.05 seconds

On those measures, Apple produced more reports and better reported actual accuracy, while Google’s reports were retrieved sooner. A location arriving quickly is not necessarily a more precise location, just as a more precise report is not necessarily the newest one.

What the results do—and do not—show

The study authors discuss polling and query behavior, rate limiting or throttling, and observations that network participation was not enabled on every supported Android device they saw as possible factors. The study does not isolate one cause, establish current performance in every country or setting, or show that Android’s broader phone-market presence should translate directly into more tracker reports. Its evidence supports a measured disadvantage for Google’s network under the tested conditions—not a universal claim that Android trackers do not work.

Check Find Hub’s offline-finding setting

Google’s support instructions place the relevant option at Settings > Google > All Services > Find Hub > Find your offline devices. Menu names and paths can vary by Android version and device maker, so search Settings for “Find Hub” if you do not see that path. Google says a screen lock (PIN, pattern, or password) is required for network finding of offline devices, and that location information is end-to-end encrypted. Google’s Find Hub help page

The available network settings are:

  • Without network: your phone does not use the crowdsourced network to find offline devices.
  • With network in busy places only: network finding is limited to busy places.
  • With network everywhere: network finding can operate in busy and remote areas, subject to account and device setup.

Google’s help page says that, under its described configuration, an Android device participates by default. The setting is still worth checking if you are troubleshooting, but changing it cannot by itself resolve differences in network density, participation, or implementation.

Choose a tracker made for Android’s network

For ordinary item finding, buy a tag specifically compatible with Find Hub rather than assuming any Bluetooth tracker will work. Google’s 2024 announcement named Chipolo and Pebblebee as makers of tags built for its network. Current Android guidance says to look for the “Works with Android” badge; confirm that the exact model and region are supported before buying. The manufacturer names do not establish that every model from either company works with Find Hub. Google’s 2024 Find My Device network announcement · Android’s Find Hub guidance

Finding your own tag is different from detecting someone else’s

Unknown-tracker alerts are a safety feature, not a shared item-finding network. Google says Android 6.0 and later can alert users to supported Find Hub-compatible tags, headphones, and Apple AirTags when a tracker separated from its owner is moving with them. Google provides steps to review an alert and locate a nearby tracker. Google’s unknown-tracker alerts help page

Apple reported in May 2024 that cross-platform unwanted-tracking alerts were implemented in iOS 17.5 and Android 6.0 or later under an industry specification. That interoperability helps phones warn about unwanted tracking; it does not make an AirTag a Google-network tracker or let Android users use an AirTag for ordinary owner tracking.
