Android’s built-in storage tools can help you find what is taking up space, from temporary files to downloaded media and offline photo copies. The amount you can recover depends on what is stored on your phone; Google’s guidance does not establish that any one cleanup trick will free gigabytes for everyone. Start by checking storage categories, then review each deletion before confirming it.
Check what is using storage first
Phone storage holds items such as photos and music; memory is where programs run. Google says an Android device may start having issues when less than 10% of its storage is free, but that is general guidance, not a guaranteed threshold or a diagnosis for every phone. (Google Android Help)

Open Settings > Storage and review the categories before removing anything. Labels and menu locations vary by manufacturer and Android version. On supported devices, Google’s storage guide also describes Settings > Storage > Free up space, where you can select items from categories such as files, photos, videos, and apps. Clear junk files with Files by Google
- Open Files by Google and tap Menu > Clean.
- Find the Junk files card and tap its clean control.
- Review the confirmation dialog. Continue only if you are sure the listed files can be discarded; this cleanup permanently deletes them.
Google says clearing junk files does not affect app settings. That does not make every file disposable, so read the confirmation before proceeding. (Google Files Help)

Clear cache without erasing app data
Use your phone’s Settings app to find the storage controls for a specific app; the exact path differs by device. Cache is temporary data, and clearing it may make an app slower the next time it opens while it rebuilds that data.
Do not confuse Clear cache with Clear storage or Clear data. Google describes clearing storage as permanently deleting all app data. If an app offers a way to remove downloaded or saved content inside its own settings, use that first when you want to preserve other app information. (Google Android Help)

Review downloads and offline media
Look through the Files app and the apps that save content for offline use. A file visible in Downloads may be safe to remove if you no longer need it, but some media is managed by the app that downloaded it. Google’s instructions include removal controls for Google TV and YouTube Music downloads; remove content from other services in their own apps. (Google Android Help)

Google Photos’ Free up space feature removes device copies of photos and videos that have been backed up. Check that backup is complete before using it. After removal, those items remain accessible in Google Photos when you are online, but they will not be available in the phone’s built-in gallery or offline. If you rely on either, keep the device copies. (Google Photos Help)

Keep large files by moving them off the phone
If a large file is taking space but you want to keep it, Google describes transferring files to a computer over USB and deleting the phone copies afterward. Confirm the transfer completed and that the files open from the computer before deleting the originals from the device. (Google Android Help)
