You can add a quantized on-device reranker to an Android RAG pipeline, but the documented MediaPipe LLM Inference API does not provide a turnkey reranking feature. Treat reranking as a separate inference stage after vector retrieval, and independently verify that your chosen model, tokenizer, artifact format, and runtime work together on your target devices. Also account for the lifecycle decision: Google says MediaPipe LLM Inference is in maintenance-only mode and recommends LiteRT-LM for continued support.
Where reranking belongs in an Android RAG pipeline
Retrieval and reranking solve different problems. Vector search quickly finds a candidate set using embedding similarity. A query–document reranker then scores each query alongside a candidate passage and reorders those candidates before the best context is sent to the language model.

- Ingest: split source material into chunks using a policy suited to the content.
- Index: embed each chunk and store its vector and associated text locally.
- Retrieve: use the query embedding to find a broader set of likely relevant chunks.
- Rerank: score the query–chunk pairs with a separate reranker and order the candidates by its output.
- Generate: select a smaller context set and pass it to the LLM.
Google’s Android RAG guide documents chunking, embeddings, local SQLite vector storage, retrieval, and supplying retrieved passages to a generation model. It does not document a cross-encoder reranking stage. The sequence above is an integration architecture, not a feature attributed to that sample.

What the Android sample provides
Local and cloud embedding routes
The Android RAG guide describes Gecko as an on-device embedder and also offers a cloud-based Gemini embedder that requires a Gemini API key. It lists Gecko files including Gecko_256_f32.tflite and Gecko_1024_quant.tflite; the number indicates the maximum token sequence length. Inputs longer than the configured sequence length are truncated. The guide describes CPU/GPU compatibility and says the sample defaults to GPU for Gecko embeddings.

Gecko is an embedding model, not a reranker. Its quantized file does not establish that it can score query–document pairs or be loaded through the LLM Inference API.
Generation and sample dependencies
The guide’s example generation model is Gemma 3 1B in a 4-bit quantized model package. That RAG guide lists com.google.ai.edge.localagents:localagents-rag:0.1.0 and com.google.mediapipe:tasks-genai:0.10.22 as sample dependencies. These are versions shown by that guide, not a statement that they are the latest releases. The separate Android LLM Inference guide lists tasks-genai:0.10.27; the pages differ, so choose versions based on the release and compatibility requirements for your project rather than treating either example as universally current.
Keep reranker inference separate from LLM Inference
Do not assume that an arbitrary .tflite model can be loaded by MediaPipe LLM Inference. The LLM API expects compatible language-model bundles, and the cited guidance does not establish the input/output contract or runtime support for a selected reranker. Build and validate the reranker as its own inference component.

Before wiring it into the pipeline, check the exact exported artifact and its contract:
- Whether the artifact format is accepted by the runtime you intend to use.
- The tokenizer, text preprocessing, input tensor signatures, output shape, and sequence limits.
- Whether the output represents a relevance score and how scores should be interpreted and ordered.
- Which CPU, GPU, or NPU execution paths are supported by the model and runtime combination.
- How model loading and inference failures are surfaced so the app can use a defined fallback.
These properties are model- and runtime-specific; the Android RAG sample does not supply them for a reranker. Do not infer that two components are compatible merely because both are described as on-device or use quantized model files.
Choose quantization for the model and hardware
Google’s LiteRT AI Edge Quantizer documentation distinguishes post-training quantization approaches with different execution and calibration tradeoffs. Quantization can reduce storage needs, but it can also affect accuracy; the size of that effect depends on the method and model.

Those are general recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular reranker export will run on a particular Android accelerator. Validate the exact artifact with its intended runtime and device path. Do not assume a quantized model will be faster or retain a particular ranking quality without measuring it.

A reranker is useful only if it improves the context ordering enough to justify its added latency, memory use, and engineering complexity. Evaluate the unquantized and quantized versions, where both are available, on the same representative queries, documents, and candidate sets.
- Ranking quality: use relevance judgments for your domain and compare the ordering and selected context against the retrieval-only baseline.
- Latency: measure the reranker and the complete retrieve–rerank–generate path on target devices.
- Resource use: record peak memory, model size, throughput, and thermal behavior during realistic sessions.
- Robustness: test long inputs, candidate limits, model-load errors, and inference failures; define a retrieval-only fallback if reranking is unavailable.
- Concurrency: keep inference off the UI thread and bound the number and length of candidate passages.
The official pages reviewed for this integration publish no benchmark for a quantized on-device reranker wired into this Android RAG pipeline. There is therefore no documented speedup or quality gain to quote; measure both on the device tiers and workload you intend to support.

Chunking and candidate limits shape the result
Reranking cannot recover information that was lost during chunking or omitted from the retrieved candidate set. Google’s RAG guide cautions that very large chunks can lose specificity while very small chunks can lose context. Its sample uses explicit chunk markers, but a production app needs to choose and test a chunking policy for its own content.
Set candidate count and passage length deliberately. More or longer candidates increase the work required of a pair-scoring stage, while overly tight limits can exclude relevant evidence. The appropriate limits depend on the reranker’s sequence constraints and the measured behavior of the full pipeline; the cited guides do not prescribe a universal value.
Account for MediaPipe’s maintenance-only status
Google’s LLM Inference documentation says the Android, iOS, and Web API is in maintenance-only mode and recommends migrating to LiteRT-LM for continued support. That makes the choice of generation runtime a lifecycle decision as well as an integration decision: existing projects may need to maintain their current path, while new work should assess the recommended migration target before committing to MediaPipe-specific dependencies.

Google describes LiteRT-LM as an orchestration layer for LLM execution using LiteRT, with Android support and hardware acceleration. The current Semantic Retriever Android guide directly depends on LiteRT-LM. That may be relevant when evaluating a newer retrieval stack, but the Semantic Retriever documentation reviewed here describes embedding and vector search—not cross-encoder reranking. Do not treat semantic retrieval as if it included a reranker.
Test on physical devices, not only an emulator
The Android LLM Inference guide names higher-end physical-device examples such as Pixel 8, Pixel 9, Samsung S23, and S24, and warns that emulators do not fully support the API and may crash or behave unexpectedly. These are examples from the guide, not universal minimum requirements. Test the complete pipeline on the device tiers you plan to support: model loading, vector retrieval, reranking, and generation all draw on limited memory and compute.
