Either can host a small home service, but neither is automatically the lower-power choice. An Android phone you already own can be a low-cost way to experiment with command-line services through Termux. A Raspberry Pi is the more conventional dedicated host, with documented model options and hardware connections. Choose according to the service, uptime requirements, networking and storage—and measure the complete systems at the wall if electricity use is the deciding factor.
Can an Android phone run a home server?
Yes. Termux is described as an Android terminal emulator and Linux environment, which can provide a way to run some command-line services on a spare handset. That does not mean every Linux server package, peripheral, or service-management approach will work in Termux; check the requirements for the particular software you want to run.

The key operational question is whether the service stays reachable when the phone is unattended. Android has background-execution limits, and the practical effect depends on Android version, the phone maker’s power-management behavior, and how the service is built. Test your actual handset after the screen turns off, after a reboot, and with its normal power-saving settings. Android’s developer guidance explains the platform’s background execution limits, but does not establish 24/7 reliability for a specific phone or server workload.
How a phone and Raspberry Pi differ
| Decision | Android phone with Termux | Raspberry Pi |
|---|---|---|
| Starting hardware | May use a spare phone you already own, avoiding a new board purchase. | Requires a board and an appropriate power supply; storage, case, network adapters, or other accessories may add cost and power draw. |
| Software environment | Linux-like command-line environment within Android; package and service compatibility must be checked for the workload. | Dedicated computer board with official documentation for hardware, power, boot, and peripherals. |
| Long-running operation | Android background execution and handset power policies can affect persistent services; test the specific device and Android version. | A conventional dedicated host, though reliable operation still depends on suitable power and peripheral choices. |
| Networking | Uses the handset’s Wi-Fi or supported accessories and Android configuration; universal wired-network compatibility is not established. | Networking depends on model. Raspberry Pi setup guidance describes USB-to-Ethernet for boards without built-in Ethernet. |
| Best fit | A lightweight service, an available spare phone, and willingness to validate uptime and access. | A separate host where documented hardware choices and physical I/O matter. |

What do Raspberry Pi power figures show?
Raspberry Pi Ltd. lists the following typical bare-board active current consumption figures in its hardware documentation. They are current values for boards, not direct wall-power measurements of complete phone and Pi servers.
| Raspberry Pi model | Typical bare-board active current |
|---|---|
| Raspberry Pi Zero | 100 mA |
| Raspberry Pi Zero W | 150 mA |
| Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W | 350 mA |
| Raspberry Pi 3 Model B | 400 mA |
| Raspberry Pi 4 Model B | 600 mA |
| Raspberry Pi 5 | 800 mA |
The same documentation includes approximate average idle-current figures from older Raspberry Pi OS setups: 0.10 A for Pi Zero, 0.30 A for Pi 3 Model B, and 0.6 A for Pi 4 Model B. The measurements used older OS images (2016 for Zero and Pi 3B; June 2019 for Pi 4B), with a monitor and input peripherals connected, and do not include additional USB devices. Treat them as historical setup measurements, not a current universal server benchmark.

- KEEP YOUR PROCESSOR COOL: The busier a processor gets the more it heats up, leading to sub-optimal performance. To prevent this common issue, this kit includes an aluminum alloy case with a pre-installed fan. The aluminum alloy actively draws the heat from the pi board, while the fan further cools the board and case. These cooling mechanisms will help push the limits of your processor and increase its flexibility.
- SIZABLE RAM: This Raspberry Pi 4 comes equipped with 4GB of RAM, which is the same amount of RAM or more RAM than many mainstream laptops contain. With 4GB of RAM, your processor will be capable of running retro gaming setups and common computer applications, media players, and much more!
- SIMPLE TO TURN ON & OFF: This kit includes a USB-C Raspberry Pi 4 compatible power supply with an easy-to-use on/off switch that was designed specifically for the Raspberry Pi 4 model to streamline processing.
- IMPROVEMENTS FROM PREVIOUS MODELS: This latest model of the Raspberry Pi 4 offers groundbreaking increases in processor speed, multimedia performance, connectivity, memory, and more! The desktop performance of this model is comparable to entry-level x86 PC systems.
- VERSATILE USE: The Raspberry Pi may have a small processor, but it is a highly adaptable little computer that can replace your desktop PC. Its functions range from practical to nostalgic since it can power an ad-blocking server as easily as it can power an outmoded gaming setup. Other uses include but are not limited to printing from non-wireless printers, playing media, making time-lapse videos, and building multiplayer network game servers and motion-capture security systems.
These figures cannot establish whether a phone or Pi will cost less to run. They describe different conditions, and a phone’s battery percentage or charger rating is not a comparable wall-power reading. USB storage, adapters, HATs, and other attached devices can also raise a Pi system’s demand; some peripherals may require an externally powered hub.

Choose a phone with Termux when
- You already have a spare Android handset and want to avoid buying a board for a small service.
- The service’s software and dependencies are compatible with the Termux environment.
- You can verify that it survives screen-off, reboot, and the handset’s power-management behavior, and that clients can reach it on your network.
Choose a Raspberry Pi when
- You want a separate, dedicated host with documented board and peripheral options.
- Your chosen model provides the networking or I/O you need, or you are prepared to add compatible accessories.
- You can account for the board’s power supply and any extra consumption from storage, adapters, HATs, or hubs.
How to compare electricity use fairly
If the electricity bill is the deciding factor, compare the exact phone and Pi configurations running the same service. Measure each complete system at the wall, using the same network connection and equivalent storage, and include both idle and busy periods. Record the handset and Pi models, operating-system versions, peripherals, workload, and measurement duration. No like-for-like measurement for a specified Android phone versus a specified Pi is established here, so the winner depends on the systems you actually deploy.
