A charging icon does not mean your Android phone and tablet have a working data connection. Check the cable, USB mode, device support and screen-lock security—but first confirm that the exact phone and tablet support direct USB file transfer. Google’s standard file-transfer steps cover Android devices connected to a Windows computer or Chromebook, not a universal phone-to-tablet workflow.
First, identify what you want the USB connection to do
File copying, mobile-internet sharing and moving data during a new-device setup are different tasks. A cable that charges a phone—or a USB tethering connection—does not necessarily let a tablet browse the phone’s files.

- Copy files: Confirm that both devices support direct USB data transfer and the required connection roles. Google’s standard instructions describe connecting an Android device to a Windows computer or Chromebook; they do not establish a general phone-to-tablet file-sharing method. - Share mobile internet: USB tethering shares the phone’s internet connection with another device. It is not a file-transfer mode, and carrier limits or charges may apply. See Google’s tethering guidance.
- Set up a new Android device: Android setup may offer cable or wireless data transfer depending on the devices and conditions. That setup flow is not the same as opening the phone’s files on a tablet. See Google’s Android setup transfer guidance.
For direct phone-to-tablet transfer, check the manufacturers’ instructions for both exact models. Compatibility can depend on the models, Android versions, ports and which device can act as the USB host.

Why the phone may charge but not connect for data
The cable may be charge-only or faulty
Some USB cables carry power but cannot transfer files. Google explicitly warns that not all USB cables can transfer files. Try a cable known to support data transfer, and test a second cable if the first does not work. A charging connection alone does not confirm a data connection.

The USB mode may not be set for file transfer
In Google’s documented Android-to-computer or Chromebook workflow, unlock the Android device, tap the “Charging this device via USB” notification, then select “File transfer” under “Use USB for.” Menu wording can differ by manufacturer and Android version. Seeing that option does not, by itself, establish that a tablet is a supported destination.
The plugs may fit differently—or one device may not support the pairing
A suitable adapter can address a mismatch between connector shapes. It cannot make either device support a USB transfer mode it does not have. Google’s adapter advice is part of its new-device setup transfer guidance, not a blanket guarantee of direct phone-to-tablet file sharing.

A device-specific security setting may block data while the screen is locked
On supported Pixel 6 and later devices, USB Protection in Advanced Protection can block a new USB data connection while the screen is locked even as charging continues. If this applies and the feature is enabled, unlock the device and retry. This is a Pixel-specific possibility, not a general explanation for every Android phone. Details are in Google’s USB Protection guidance.

Troubleshoot in a useful order
- Write down both device models and Android versions. Note each device’s connector type and what appears when you connect them. Check both manufacturers’ guidance for direct USB transfer support; do not assume that compatibility with a computer means compatibility with another Android device.
- Try a known data-capable cable. Confirm that each plug fits the intended port. If the connector shapes differ, use an appropriate adapter only after checking compatibility. A cable or adapter addresses a connection component, not unsupported device behavior.
- Unlock the phone and check its USB notification. For the documented Windows computer or Chromebook path, tap “Charging this device via USB” and choose “File transfer.” If there is no notification or file-transfer option, the direct phone-to-tablet path may not be supported or may use a manufacturer-specific process.
- Test the cable and endpoints separately. Try a second data cable. Connect the phone to a computer to see whether it can transfer files there, and test the other endpoint with another USB device where possible. These checks help distinguish a cable or port problem from a device-pairing limitation.
- If a Windows computer is part of the test, check detection. Google’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking that new hardware detection is enabled, restarting and updating Android if needed. These computer checks do not prove that the tablet supports direct transfer.
- If applicable, retry with the Pixel unlocked. For a supported Pixel 6 or later with USB Protection enabled, unlock the phone before starting a new data connection.
- Use a transfer method both devices support. For files, consider an account-based transfer or a manufacturer-supported setup flow. Choose based on the task: an internet-sharing tether is not a substitute for file transfer.
What to check before replacing a cable or buying an adapter
- Does the cable explicitly support data transfer, rather than charging only?
- Does it have the connector type required by each device, directly or through an appropriate adapter?
- Do the manufacturers document direct USB transfer for these exact models?
- Is the goal file copying, internet sharing or new-device setup? A product that solves one does not necessarily solve another.
If the devices’ USB support is unclear, get the phone and tablet model names before choosing accessories. A data-capable cable is a sensible test for a charge-only or faulty cable, but no cable or adapter alone guarantees that two Android devices can exchange files directly.
