Android may be adding a built-in way to move an on-screen cursor with a game controller, but the feature is not confirmed for release. Strings found in Android 17 QPR3 Beta 1 describe a setting called “Gamepad mouse”; Android Authority reported the discovery on October 8, 2026. No launch date or supported-controller list has been announced.
What the beta strings say
Android Authority found three relevant strings in Android 17 QPR3 Beta 1: “Gamepad mouse,” “Use a connected gamepad to control the cursor,” and “Gamepad mouse lets you control the cursor and perform actions using a connected gamepad or joystick.” These are interface strings in beta code, not a public launch announcement or a statement from a Google spokesperson. Android Authority’s report says a joystick could move the cursor freely across the screen and a controller’s default action button could simulate a tap.

That would differ from focus navigation, in which controller input moves a highlight between selectable screen elements. A movable pointer could, in principle, reach floating menus or parts of scrolling feeds that are awkward to select by moving focus alone. The report describes a possible usability benefit for people who have difficulty using a touchscreen, but no study or measured accessibility outcome has been published for this feature.

The report does not confirm that the feature is enabled for beta users or available publicly. Code strings can indicate work in progress, but do not prove that a feature will ship. Android Authority could not determine its timing; a future stable QPR3 release was mentioned only as a possibility, not a confirmed release window.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
There is also no published list of compatible controller models or reported compatibility testing. The beta discovery therefore does not establish that any particular controller will work with the proposed cursor feature.
How this differs from existing Android controller options
Focus navigation
Controllers can already navigate selectable items by moving focus from one element to another. That is distinct from free cursor movement: the beta strings point to a pointer that could be positioned anywhere on screen, but this behavior has not been confirmed as a released Android feature.

Controllers with touchpads
Some controllers have an integrated touchpad that can generate an on-screen mouse pointer when touched. Android Developers documents this as an existing pointer-input route for supported hardware. It is a controller-specific capability, not evidence that the newly reported system setting is available. Android Developers: Additional controller features

Android’s Game Controller library documentation distinguishes physical mice from virtual mouse devices emulated by controllers; an analog stick or integrated touchpad may provide mouse-like input. That developer-library behavior should not be mistaken for confirmation of a new system-wide consumer feature. Android Developers: Add mouse device support

Connecting a controller is not the same as verifying cursor support
Google’s Android Help explains that a controller can be connected with a compatible cable or paired wirelessly over Bluetooth. It also documents settings for swapping button assignments or switching the left and right joystick assignments. Those are general controller setup options; Google’s instructions do not certify support for the beta’s reported cursor feature. Set up your game controller settings on Android
For now, treat connection and cursor compatibility as separate questions: a controller may pair successfully without supporting the reported gamepad mouse behavior. The available reporting gives no model-by-model comparison, confirmed compatibility results, or performance measurements.

- Which controller models, Android devices, or connection types would support it.
- How well the pointer and simulated tap would work in different apps or accessibility scenarios.
