Use USB tethering when one compatible computer can connect by cable; choose a Wi-Fi hotspot when the receiving device needs to stay wireless or several devices need access. Android also supports Bluetooth tethering on most phones, but the best option depends on compatibility, convenience and your mobile plan—not a published universal speed or battery winner.
How the two connection methods differ
Both let another device use your Android phone’s mobile data. With a Wi-Fi hotspot, the phone creates a wireless network that the receiving device joins through its Wi-Fi settings. With USB tethering, you connect the phone to the other device by cable and enable USB tethering in the phone’s settings. Google says most Android phones can share mobile data over Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or USB. Google’s Android hotspot and tethering guide covers the standard setup.

Choose based on the device and situation
| What matters | Wi-Fi hotspot | USB tethering |
|---|---|---|
| Receiving device | Any device that can join a Wi-Fi network | A compatible device with a suitable USB connection; Google says Android USB tethering does not work with Mac computers |
| Mobility | Useful when the receiving device needs to move around without a cable | Connects the phone and receiving device by cable |
| Multiple devices | Google says a hotspot can share mobile data with up to 10 other devices; carrier or phone limits may differ | Useful for a direct connection to one compatible computer |
| What you need | Hotspot enabled on the phone and the network password | A USB cable that fits both devices and supports data, plus USB tethering enabled on the phone |
Use Wi-Fi when
- The receiving device is a Mac, since Google’s Android instructions say USB tethering is not supported for Mac computers.
- You need to connect more than one device, or the receiving device should remain untethered. Google documents hotspot sharing for up to 10 other devices, though that figure is not a guarantee for every phone or carrier.
- The receiving device can join Wi-Fi and you want to avoid a cable connection.
Use USB when
- You are connecting one compatible computer and a cable connection suits your setup.
- You have a USB cable that fits both devices and carries data; a cable that only charges may not be sufficient.
Google’s help pages do not provide a head-to-head test of speed, reliability, security or battery use, so they do not establish that either method is universally faster, steadier or more power-efficient. Practical results can depend on the phone, computer, mobile signal, cable and configuration.
Set up a Wi-Fi hotspot
- On the Android phone, turn on Hotspot in Quick Settings. To open hotspot settings, press and hold the Hotspot control. Menu names and locations can vary by phone.
- If needed, use the hotspot settings to view or change the network name and password. Keep the hotspot password-protected rather than choosing the unprotected “None” security option.
- On the receiving device, open Wi-Fi settings, select the phone’s hotspot network and enter its password.
Set up USB tethering
- Connect the Android phone to the receiving device with a USB cable that fits both and supports data.
- On the phone, open Hotspot and tethering settings and turn on USB tethering. The exact menu path can differ by device.
- Check that the receiving device has a connection. If USB tethering is unavailable, check device compatibility and the cable; Android USB tethering is not supported for Mac computers according to Google.
Check your plan and manage the connection
Some carriers limit tethering or charge extra, so check your own plan before relying on either method. Both Wi-Fi and USB tethering share the phone’s mobile connection; switching methods does not remove carrier restrictions. Google recommends plugging devices in during tethering, turning connections off when finished, and enabling automatic hotspot shutoff if your phone offers it. Its guidance does not claim that USB always saves battery or that Wi-Fi always uses more.

What about Instant Hotspot?
Google also documents Instant Hotspot and automatic Wi-Fi sharing for supported personal devices. These optional conveniences depend on Android version and manufacturer, and require the same Google Account and cross-device services. Samsung devices have separate feature behavior. Availability is not universal; ordinary Wi-Fi hotspot setup does not require Instant Hotspot. See Google’s guidance on connecting personal devices automatically to Wi-Fi and Instant Hotspots. Google notes that some hotspot and tethering instructions apply only to Android 14 and newer, so settings and feature availability can vary.
