Then restart the hotspot, reconnect from the other device, and check whether your carrier and plan allow tethering. The right fix depends on where the connection fails: the phone’s cellular service, hotspot visibility, the client device’s Wi-Fi connection, or the plan.
1. Check mobile data and cellular signal on the phone
A hotspot shares the phone’s mobile data connection. If the phone cannot reach the internet over cellular service, a connected laptop or tablet will not be able to browse through it either. Temporarily turn off Wi-Fi on the phone and try opening a webpage using mobile data. Google’s mobile connectivity guidance includes signal and carrier service among the checks for mobile-data problems.

- If mobile data does not work on the phone, check that Airplane mode is off and mobile data is enabled, then check signal, SIM or eSIM service, and whether your carrier reports an outage.
- If the phone has no usable cellular connection, troubleshoot that first; changing the hotspot’s Wi-Fi settings will not restore cellular internet.
2. Make sure the hotspot is on, then restart it
On a Pixel, open Settings > Network & internet > Hotspot & tethering > Wi-Fi hotspot. If it is already on, switch it off, wait briefly, and switch it back on. Google documents this as an initial check in its Pixel hotspot troubleshooting instructions. Other Android phones may use different menu names or paths; search Settings for “hotspot” or consult the phone maker’s guide.

3. Reconnect from the device that needs internet
On the laptop, tablet, or other device, open its Wi-Fi list, select the phone’s current hotspot name, and enter the current hotspot password. Google’s Android instructions for sharing a mobile connection describe connecting another device this way.

- Check that you selected the phone’s hotspot rather than a nearby network with a similar name.
- If you changed the hotspot name or password, use the updated details on the client device.
- If the client saved an old password, forget that Wi-Fi network on the client and connect again with the current password.
4. If the hotspot is not showing up, check visibility and band settings
A hotspot that does not appear in another device’s Wi-Fi list may be hidden or using a band the client cannot see. The exact controls vary by model. For the Galaxy Z Fold6, Samsung’s English EU user manual recommends setting the hotspot band to 2.4 GHz and turning off Hidden network under Advanced when another device cannot find the hotspot. Treat that as model-specific guidance, not a universal Android menu path.
5. Confirm that your carrier and plan permit tethering
Hotspot settings cannot bypass carrier restrictions. Google Android Help notes that “Some mobile carriers limit or charge extra for tethering,” and Pixel Help says that “Not all mobile service providers work with mobile hotspots.” Check with your carrier whether your phone and plan are eligible, whether tethering has a separate allowance, and whether any data limit or charge applies. 6. Check whether the hotspot is turning itself off
Google says a Pixel hotspot automatically turns off if no devices are connected for 10 minutes. That documented timer applies to Pixel guidance; other Android phones may behave differently. If the network disappears while idle, turn the hotspot back on and connect the client promptly. Google’s Pixel instructions describe this behavior.

Some phones cannot use Wi-Fi and a Wi-Fi hotspot at the same time. Google’s Pixel troubleshooting page gives the Pixel 7a as an example: Wi-Fi turns off when its hotspot is enabled. This is not a rule for every Android model. Also, Google’s Pixel tethering instructions say to turn off Data Saver to use Wi-Fi tethering on a Pixel. If you have a different phone, check its own support guidance before assuming either behavior applies.

8. Try Bluetooth or USB tethering if Wi-Fi hotspot sharing is unsuitable
Google documents three ways to share a phone’s mobile connection: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and USB. USB tethering may help when Wi-Fi discovery is the obstacle, but it still depends on mobile service and carrier permission. It also requires a cable that supports data and a compatible host device. Google says Android USB tethering does not work with Mac computers.

9. Identify where the connection is failing
- The phone itself has no mobile internet: check cellular signal, mobile-data settings, SIM service, and carrier status.
- The hotspot is on but cannot be found: check the hotspot name, visibility, and supported band; model-specific controls may apply.
- The client sees the hotspot but cannot join: verify the current password and reconnect from the client’s Wi-Fi settings.
- The client joins but has no internet: confirm the phone has working mobile data and ask the carrier whether tethering is permitted on the plan.
- The hotspot disappears after sitting idle: check the phone’s automatic shutdown behavior; Pixel guidance documents a 10-minute no-device timeout.
10. Contact the right support team
Contact your carrier if the phone’s mobile data is unavailable, your plan’s tethering eligibility is unclear, or an outage is possible. Contact the phone manufacturer if the settings on your device do not match the guidance for its model or the hotspot behaves unexpectedly after these checks. Google’s Pixel hotspot help specifically advises confirming hotspot eligibility with the carrier.
