A device connecting to your Android hotspot only confirms it joined the phone’s local Wi-Fi network; it does not confirm that the phone can reach the internet or that the carrier allows tethering. First turn off Wi-Fi on the phone and test a webpage using mobile data. If that fails, fix the phone’s cellular connection or account first. If it works, check hotspot settings, carrier eligibility, and another tethering method.
1. Check whether mobile data works on the phone
Turn Wi-Fi off on the Android phone, leave mobile data on, and try loading a webpage. Android hotspot shares the phone’s mobile data connection, so a client can join the hotspot even when that upstream connection is unavailable. Google’s Android instructions and Motorola’s Android 14 guidance both describe sharing a mobile connection.

- If the phone cannot load pages either: Check cellular coverage, confirm mobile data is enabled, and check whether the account or data service is active. Resolve that cellular-data problem before troubleshooting the hotspot client.
- If the phone can load pages: The cellular connection works for the phone, so continue with hotspot settings and tethering eligibility.
2. Refresh the hotspot and check its settings
On Pixel phones, Google documents this path: Settings → Network & internet → Hotspot & tethering → Wi-Fi hotspot. Turn the hotspot off and back on if it is already enabled. Other Android makers and software versions may use different menu labels; consult the phone’s own support instructions if this path does not match. Google’s Pixel Wi-Fi troubleshooting guide covers Pixel hotspot settings.
For Pixel, test with Data Saver off
Google’s Pixel tethering instructions say Data Saver must be off to tether over Wi-Fi. Turn it off for a test if it is enabled. This is a documented Pixel check, not a confirmed universal cause on every Android phone. Google’s Pixel hotspot and tethering instructions provide the requirement.

3. Confirm the carrier allows hotspot use on your line
Hotspot access can depend on the carrier, device, and plan; some providers limit tethering or charge separately. Ask your operator to confirm that hotspot or tethering is enabled for this specific line and included in the current plan. Google notes that carrier restrictions apply and that not all providers support mobile hotspots. Google’s Android tethering help and Pixel troubleshooting guidance explain these limitations.
4. Compare Wi-Fi with Bluetooth or USB tethering
Android can share a mobile connection through Bluetooth and USB as well as Wi-Fi, where the phone and receiving device support those options. Test another method if available. If it works, that is evidence the problem may be specific to Wi-Fi hotspot sharing, but it does not identify the cause by itself. Google’s instructions also state that Mac computers cannot tether with Android by USB. See Google’s supported tethering methods and limitations.

5. Check model-specific hotspot behavior
Hotspot operation varies by phone. Google says some devices, including Pixel 7a, cannot keep Wi-Fi and hotspot on simultaneously. Pixel support also says its hotspot turns off automatically after 10 minutes when no devices are connected. These are device-specific examples, not rules for all Android phones. Check the support page for your exact model if the hotspot switches off or behaves differently than expected. Google’s Pixel Wi-Fi troubleshooting guide describes these cases.

| Check | Result | What it indicates |
|---|---|---|
| Phone internet with Wi-Fi off | Does not work | Address mobile data, coverage, account status, or carrier service before hotspot troubleshooting. |
| Phone internet with Wi-Fi off | Works | Continue with hotspot configuration and carrier tethering eligibility. |
| Hotspot client joins Wi-Fi | Still no internet | The local Wi-Fi connection succeeded; the phone’s upstream data or tethering path is not yet confirmed. |
| Bluetooth or USB tethering | Works while Wi-Fi hotspot does not | The fault may be limited to Wi-Fi hotspot sharing; this result alone does not establish the underlying fault. |
| Carrier confirms tethering is included | All tested tethering methods still fail | A device-specific setting or support issue remains possible. |
7. When to contact support
If mobile data works on the phone but Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and USB tethering all fail, contact the carrier and device manufacturer. Give them the phone model, Android version, carrier, whether mobile data works with Wi-Fi off, and which tethering methods you tried. Carrier restrictions and phone-specific behavior are documented, but these symptoms do not point to one universal cause.
