The difference is practical: an Android reader may widen where you can read, while a dedicated Kindle keeps its own store-and-device workflow. Which matters more depends on whether you value app choice or a focused reading experience.
What an Android e-reader changes
A conventional Kindle centers the reading experience on Amazon’s ecosystem. An Android e-reader can run third-party apps as well, potentially putting books from several services and personal documents on the same device. That flexibility is the main reason an Android model can look like an all-in-one alternative.

It is not a uniform category: operating system, app availability, hardware, and supported formats vary by model. The BOOX Go 7 is one concrete example. BOOX lists Android 13, Google Play Store access, and third-party app support for it on its official product page.
Can you read Kindle books on an Android e-reader?
Yes, Amazon makes the Kindle app available for Android devices through Google Play. That gives readers a way to access Kindle content without Kindle hardware; see Amazon’s Kindle app page.

App availability does not establish that every title, Kindle feature, or reading behavior will be identical across Android e-readers. The app runs within the Android device’s software environment, rather than turning that device into a Kindle. A TechRadar comparison describes installing the Kindle app from Google Play as an option for Kindle owners using BOOX devices, while characterizing BOOX’s broader functionality as tablet-like; that is editorial assessment, not a controlled comparison of reading performance (TechRadar’s BOOX-versus-Kobo comparison).

| Go 7 specification | BOOX listing |
|---|---|
| Display | 7-inch monochrome ePaper, 1680 × 1264 resolution, 300 ppi |
| Operating system and apps | Android 13; built-in Google Play Store |
| Memory and storage | 4 GB RAM; 64 GB storage; microSD card slot |
| Battery and weight | 2,300 mAh battery; approximately 195 g |
| Listed formats | EPUB, EPUB3, PDF, AZW3, MOBI, among others |
All figures and format examples in the table come from BOOX’s Go 7 specifications. Listed support for a file format does not mean every file from every source will open: DRM restrictions and how a file is transferred can matter. Nor does the 2,300 mAh capacity establish how long the device lasts between charges.
Where Kindle may still suit you better
More apps mean more choice, but they can also mean more configuration and a less focused device. A reader who wants one straightforward route from store to book may prefer a dedicated Kindle workflow; someone who already uses multiple reading services or reads a broad mix of documents may find Android’s flexibility more valuable. These are priorities to weigh, not measured claims that one device is simpler, faster, or more comfortable for everyone.

The available sources do not establish like-for-like battery runtime, page-turn responsiveness, setup time, reading comfort, or long-term Android support for a BOOX Go 7 versus a current Kindle. For those factors, compare reliable testing of the exact models you are considering and account for your own app, lighting, and usage habits.

- Start with your library: Check whether your books are in Kindle, other reading apps, or personal files, and whether the specific Android model supports the formats and services you need.
- Check restrictions, not just extensions: A format list is not a guarantee that a purchased or protected book will work. Verify DRM and transfer requirements with the book provider.
- Consider the workflow you want: Choose app flexibility if using multiple services on one device matters. Favor a dedicated reader if minimizing configuration and distractions is more important.
- Evaluate real-world performance separately: Seek comparable measurements for battery runtime and responsiveness instead of inferring them from battery capacity or operating system.
- Confirm the exact model and region: App access and specifications are model-specific, while pricing and availability can change by market and date.
An Android e-reader can be a credible alternative for someone whose main need is combining reading apps and compatible files on E Ink. It does not prove that the Kindle experience itself has been replaced. The decision turns on whether broader access is worth trading a single-purpose reading workflow for a configurable one.
