It does not make the screen respond like a phone or tablet. These devices make the most sense when you want a reading-first E Ink device with a few useful extras—not a tablet for fast scrolling, video, or games.
What Android adds—and what it does not
On a conventional e-reader, you are usually limited to its built-in store and supported services. Android can broaden that choice: depending on the device, you may install apps from Google Play or add an app package (APK) yourself. BOOX says Google Play is preinstalled and activated on most of its currently sold models; some earlier models require manual activation. Its support documentation also explains that users can download APK files in a browser or sideload them from a computer (BOOX: Download and Install Apps).

That flexibility is model-specific, not a promise that every Android app will install or work well. Check the exact model’s Android version and app support before buying, especially for apps that rely on animation, frequent screen updates, location services, or particular hardware. Google Play availability and setup can differ across devices and generations.

E Ink forms an image by moving physical ink particles. BOOX notes that this process refreshes more slowly than a traditional display (BOOX: Understanding E Ink Technology in BOOX Devices). That is why page turns and static text suit the screen, while rapid scrolling, animated interfaces, video, and fast-moving games can feel less immediate. Some content may also leave faint traces of an earlier image, known as ghosting.
#1 Best Overall
- 【Eye friendly】5.8-inch touch screen with E-Ink technology, you can enjoy an eye-friendly and comfortable reading experience anywhere at any time. The screen is as close to an ordinary paper as possible, so it does not glare in the sun and doesn’t tire your eyes.
- 【Expand your library】 32GB of storage allows you to take your entire collection with you. With a memory card slot, the e-reader can easily expand its 64GB of internal storage.
- 【Easy to carry】Weighing just 165 grams, the e-reader is a lightweight device designed to accompany you on every adventure. You can take your story to the park, the beach, a coffee shop, etc.
- 【Speakerphone】You can listen to your favorite stories through the speakers when you're busy. E-book readers have a battery life of several weeks, so you can experience uninterrupted reading on a single charge.
- 【Convenient Design】Glide through stories with a simple touchscreen swipe, or use the page-turn buttons when one hand is busy. You can also switch to landscape mode for a different reading experience. Paired with a dedicated full-wrap cover for drop and scratch protection, reading should always be this elegant and effortless.
Refresh settings can make particular tasks more usable, but they are a tradeoff rather than a fix that turns E Ink into LCD or OLED. BOOX describes its modes as balancing display quality and refresh speed (BOOX: Refresh Modes):
- HD mode: prioritizes image quality, a sensible choice for reading text and viewing static pages.
- Speed mode: refreshes faster for more responsive interaction, usually at the expense of image quality.
- Smooth mode: on supported devices, targets dynamic content that changes frequently.
BOOX also documents per-app refresh settings and manual full refresh. These controls can help tailor a browser or reading app, but the available modes vary by device. A faster setting may make scrolling easier to follow without making it look as clean as a static page.
Which tasks suit an Android E Ink reader?
Good fit: reading across several apps
If you want to use more than one ebook service, Android can be a meaningful advantage. TechRadar’s review of the Palma 2 Pro reports that Kindle, Kobo, and Google Play Books work on that model. The reviewer also found touch interactions less responsive than on a phone, so app availability should not be confused with phone-like feel (TechRadar: BOOX Palma 2 Pro review).

Good fit: documents and notes on a larger screen
A larger Android E Ink tablet can make more sense than a pocket reader if you read documents, mark up pages, or take handwritten notes. Android Central describes the Note Air 5 C as a color E Ink tablet with Android 15, Google Play support, a stylus, and offline OCR and annotation features in BOOX Notes (Android Central: BOOX Note Air 5 C review). Those features point to a document workspace, not a more portable version of a regular tablet.
Usable with adjustments: web browsing
Browsing can work when you accept slower scrolling and tune the refresh mode for the browser. It is better suited to reading articles or checking relatively static pages than to rapidly navigating a highly animated site. If you expect to spend much of your time browsing, try the relevant browser on the specific device if you can.

Poor fit: video and fast games
These are the tasks most likely to expose slow refresh and image artifacts. A faster mode may improve responsiveness, but it does not remove the screen’s underlying limits. If video playback, action games, or fluid scrolling are central to your use, a conventional tablet is the more appropriate choice.

These examples show distinct sizes and roles, not a complete market survey. The Go 7 figures below are manufacturer specifications; the Palma 2 Pro and Note Air 5 C descriptions draw on named reviewers’ findings.
| Device | Form and display | Software and features | What the example is for |
|---|---|---|---|
| ONYX BOOX Go 7 | Manufacturer lists a 7-inch Carta Plus E Ink display. | Manufacturer lists Android 13, Google Play and third-party app support, 4 GB RAM, 64 GB storage, microSD expansion, and a 2300 mAh battery. These are specifications, not a runtime guarantee. (ONYX BOOX product page) | A compact reading device with broader app access; its listed configuration should not be assumed for other models. |
| ONYX BOOX Palma 2 Pro | TechRadar describes a pocket-sized color E Ink device. The reviewer found color useful for some web pages and color content, but reported grayer whites and less crisp plain text than on the monochrome Palma 2. | The May 2026 review describes Android 15 and Google Play support. It also reports that reading-app interactions remain less responsive than on a phone. (TechRadar review) | Pocket reading and selected color content, with a screen-quality tradeoff versus monochrome. |
| ONYX BOOX Note Air 5 C | Android Central describes a larger color E Ink tablet with stylus support. | The review describes Android 15, Google Play, and offline OCR and annotation features in BOOX Notes. (Android Central review) | Document reading, markup, and note-taking rather than pocket portability. |
Battery life depends on how you use it
TechRadar estimated five to six weeks per charge for the Palma 2 Pro with conservative settings and about an hour of reading each day. Its estimate fell to two to three weeks with heavier app use, browsing, streaming, and wireless use. Those are reviewer estimates for one model and stated usage patterns, not a category-wide promise. The Go 7’s listed 2300 mAh battery capacity, by itself, cannot predict how long it will run.
How to decide if one is right for you
- Start with your main task. Choose Android E Ink for reading in selected apps, static documents, or handwritten annotation—not because you expect a phone-like app experience.
- Check the actual software combination. Confirm the device’s Android version, Google Play setup, and compatibility with the apps you need. Sideloading is an option on documented BOOX devices, but it does not guarantee an app will work properly.
- Choose the screen and size for the work. Monochrome is the straightforward choice for text clarity; color can help with color material but may affect how whites and plain text look. Pocket readers and larger stylus-equipped tablets solve different portability and workspace needs.
- Consider the total setup. If you plan to annotate, check whether the stylus is included or compatible; for travel, account for any case you want. Verify current prices and accessory compatibility for the exact model.
- Be realistic about interaction. Refresh modes may help with browsing, but fast-moving content remains a weak fit for E Ink.
Choose an Android E Ink reader if app flexibility will support your reading habits and you are comfortable with slower, task-dependent interaction. Choose a conventional tablet if speed, video, or gaming matters more than an E Ink reading experience.
