If Android calls go straight to voicemail, the cause is usually call filtering, Google Voice routing, blocked callers, or weak mobile service. First determine whether the calls use your carrier’s regular phone service or Google Voice; then check the settings for that path. If service or reception problems keep happening, contact your carrier.
First, identify which calls are affected
Check whether callers are reaching your regular mobile number or a Google Voice number. The two services have separate call settings, so changing an Android setting alone may not fix a Google Voice routing issue.

- All or most callers: Check Android call-filtering Modes and mobile service.
- Only particular callers: Check blocked numbers and call-screening settings before assuming there is a wider service problem.
- Google Voice calls: Check Voice settings as well as Android settings.
Check Android Do Not Disturb and other Modes
Android Modes, including Do Not Disturb, can silence calls or limit interruptions. Google describes Modes as a way to “silence your device and to manage when and how you want to be notified.” Some modes can turn on automatically by schedule, which can explain why calls go to voicemail only at particular times. Google’s Android guide to Modes and Do Not Disturb notes that steps and labels vary by device, and some instructions apply only to Android 14 and later.

- If the problem continues, open Settings and inspect Modes and the Do Not Disturb filters. The exact labels may differ by phone and Android version.
- Review schedules and custom modes, such as Bedtime or Driving, especially if the missed calls happen at recurring times.
If the calls use Google Voice, check Voice routing
Google Voice has its own settings that determine whether incoming calls ring on your devices or go to voicemail. In the Voice app, verify that the phone you expect to ring is selected under the incoming-call device options. Check Voice’s Do Not Disturb setting too: when it is enabled, incoming Voice calls are sent to voicemail. Eligible Workspace accounts may also have a work or out-of-office schedule controlling this setting. Google’s instructions for sending Voice calls to voicemail explain this behavior.

If the intended device is selected and Do Not Disturb is off, check these other Voice-related causes:
- Review blocked numbers and any call-blocking apps.
- Confirm Voice notifications are allowed and that background activity is not restricted.
- Check that linked phones and numbers are active. Turning off all Voice devices and linked numbers can leave calls going to voicemail.
- Keep in mind that the carrier’s voicemail may answer a missed or dropped call, even when the call began through Voice.

Check mobile service and reception
If calls through the regular carrier number are affected and the phone has weak or no mobile service, try a different location and toggle Airplane mode off and back on. These checks can help distinguish a reception problem from a call-filtering setting. They cannot repair a carrier-side activation or service fault. Google’s Android connection troubleshooting guide includes basic connection checks; for recurring activation, service, reception, or call-quality problems, use Google’s carrier-help guidance to contact your mobile carrier.
When Wi-Fi calling may help
Wi-Fi calling is an option only when your carrier supports it. The setting may not appear on a phone whose carrier does not offer the feature. If it is available but continues to fail, restart the phone; persistent trouble may require the carrier to help reactivate the service. See Google’s instructions for making calls over Wi-Fi.
