Google expanded the types of betting and gaming apps it said Play would support in India, Mexico and Brazil in 2024. Separate Android changes announced in 2026 address developer identity and app-store installation—not gambling licenses or permission to bet.
What changed—and what did not
On January 11, 2024, Google announced that Google Play would support more real-money gaming (RMG) app types and operators, with a planned June 2024 rollout for users in India, Mexico and Brazil. Google described this as an expansion following pilots, including daily fantasy sports (DFS) and rummy in India and DFS in Mexico. Google said its existing safeguards would remain: RMG apps should use age-gating to limit access to adults and geo-gating to offer apps only where legal. Play availability is not proof that a particular bet is lawful for a particular user. Google Play’s current gambling policy

The rollout dates in the 2024 announcement are historical plans, not a guarantee that any particular app is available today. The announcement said India’s DFS and rummy pilot apps could remain on Play through June 30, 2024, after which broader RMG types could be distributed subject to local law and Play policy. It set the same June 30, 2024 end date for Mexico’s DFS pilot before broader RMG distribution could proceed on those conditions. Check current Play listings and local rules rather than relying on those announcement-era dates.

How Google Play decides whether a betting app can appear
Google Play does not permit every gambling app everywhere, but its policy is not a worldwide ban either. It allows covered apps in select countries through an application process and subject to the rest of Play’s policies. The developer must be an approved governmental operator and/or registered as a licensed operator with the relevant authority in the specified country, and must provide a valid license for the particular gambling product there. There are therefore separate checks: whether the app and operator meet Google Play’s requirements, whether the app is offered in the user’s location, and whether the operator and betting product are authorized under local law. Passing one check does not settle the others. Google’s 2024 expansion changed the range of RMG apps Play said it would support in the named markets; it did not remove local licensing requirements or the age- and location-based safeguards.

Why a betting app may be missing from Play
A missing listing does not by itself explain the reason. Play’s rules limit gambling apps to select countries and require an application, qualifying operator status and a valid license for the product and jurisdiction. An app may also be unavailable in a location where its operator cannot legally offer that product. Google’s policy does not establish the current status of any specific operator in a reader’s jurisdiction; verify the operator’s local authorization with the relevant regulator and check the app’s current Play listing.
Play Store versus other Android installation routes
Google Play is one Android distribution channel, not the only one. Google describes users getting apps from other stores or sideloading directly from a developer’s website. Play’s gambling-app policy applies to apps distributed on Play; it should not be treated as a universal approval system for every app installed on Android. Android developer verification is not gambling approval
Google’s Android developer-verification documentation describes a separate platform measure. Google says protections begin September 30, 2026, for installs from participating stores in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand on certified devices running Android 7 or later; global expansion is planned for 2027. This measure concerns verifying developer identity. It does not establish that a betting operator has a gambling license, that a particular app has passed Google Play’s RMG application process, or that betting is legal where a user lives. Google’s wording is that “Protections begin for users installing apps from participating stores in select regions on certified Android devices.”

On March 4, 2026, Google announced broader Play and Android changes, including expanded billing choice and an optional Registered App Stores program. Google said qualifying registered stores that meet certain benchmarks would receive a more streamlined installation flow. The program was to start outside the United States, with US implementation subject to court approval; Google planned to launch it with a major Android release by the end of 2026. How to check whether you can use a betting app
- Check the applicable law. Identify the rules for your location and the specific betting product, including any state or regional restrictions.
- Verify the operator. Consult the relevant gambling regulator or official licensing register for authorization covering that product and jurisdiction.
- Check the distribution route. For a Play listing, confirm that the app is currently offered in your country and meets Play’s gambling-app requirements. For another store or a direct download, do not treat the installation option as proof of Play approval or local legality.
- Confirm who published the app. Use the store’s developer information and the operator’s official channels to check that the app is genuine. Developer verification, where applicable, helps identify developers; it is not a gambling license.
