Android Auto’s Weather Experience Is Broken—and a Raccoon Meme Won’t Fix It

Android Auto has weather apps, but better integration with navigation—not an unreleased raccoon animation—is the missing piece in Andy Walker’s critique.

Android Auto’s weather experience is uneven, and an unreleased raccoon animation would not address the core problem: drivers need useful weather information that fits naturally alongside navigation. That is the argument Android Authority’s Andy Walker made on Oct. 2, 2026—not a Google diagnosis, and not a claim that every car, app, or Android Auto setup behaves the same way.

What is wrong with Android Auto’s weather experience?

Walker’s criticism is about integration, not simply the absence of weather apps. He names MyRadar and Weather & Radar as third-party apps that support Android Auto, but says that using them does not provide the combination he wants: weather information that works alongside broader navigation details. In his account, drivers can feel forced to choose between the two. That is his assessment of the experience, not a universal test result or proof that either app lacks every navigation-related function. Android Authority’s Oct. 2, 2026 opinion article

A useful in-car weather app has to do more than display a forecast. Drivers need to see relevant information quickly, understand whether conditions may affect a trip, and avoid a layout that competes with the route. Google’s developer guidance describes weather maps and overlays such as temperature, wind, and radar as possible capabilities. It does not establish that every app provides all of them or combines them with Google Maps navigation.

Android Auto and Google built-in are different

Android Auto projects compatible phone apps onto a car’s display. Cars with Google built-in run Google’s system in the vehicle. An app announced for one does not automatically belong to the other.

Google announced The Weather Channel app for cars with Google built-in, with hourly forecasts, follow-me alerts, and Trip View radar. That announcement does not say the app is an Android Auto projection app. Google’s Jan. 9, 2024 announcement

Google’s later developer information says the weather app category graduated from beta, allowing developers to publish weather apps to production tracks for both Android Auto and cars with Google built-in. Its guidance for Android for Cars templates describes ways weather apps can show relevant information, including maps with temperature, wind, and radar overlays. Those are supported design possibilities, not a guarantee that every available app offers every feature. Android Developers Blog, May 2025 Google for Developers weather-app guidance

Question Android Auto Cars with Google built-in
What is it? Phone apps projected onto a compatible car display. Google’s system running in the vehicle.
What weather availability is established here? Google says developers can publish weather apps to production tracks; specific app features vary. The Weather Channel announcement describes hourly forecasts, follow-me alerts, and Trip View radar.
Does The Weather Channel announcement establish availability for this system? No. The announcement is for cars with Google built-in. Yes. Google announced the app for cars with Google built-in.

Google also announced The Weather Channel for cars with Google built-in in 2023; that historical announcement likewise should not be read as confirmation that it is an Android Auto projection app. Google’s Sep. 13, 2023 announcement

What to look for in an Android Auto weather app

Because features and integration differ, compare an app against the job you need it to do rather than assuming that an Android Auto label means it works well during navigation.

  • System compatibility: Check whether the app is for Android Auto projection, cars with Google built-in, or both.
  • Information offered: Confirm whether it shows current conditions, forecasts, alerts, or radar. A weather category listing does not guarantee that every app provides all these features.
  • Navigation behavior: Find out whether weather stays accessible during active navigation and how it shares the display with route guidance. Google’s template documentation establishes weather maps and overlays as a design space, not integration with Google Maps in every app.
  • Glanceability: Look for clear, limited information that is easy to read at a glance. A large or busy map may offer detail without making that detail practical to use while driving.

For Walker, the gap is a more coherent experience: weather that informs a trip without making drivers trade away the navigation context. Google Director of Product and User Experience for Android for Cars Guemmy Kim described the company’s broader aim in a Jan. 9, 2024 announcement: “Cars do so much more than get you from point A to point B these days, and Android is dedicated to making the full driving experience as safe, connected and enjoyable as possible.” That statement describes a general product goal; it is not a promise to fix Android Auto weather integration. Why weather matters on the road—and what the numbers do not show

The Federal Highway Administration’s Road Weather Management page reports estimated annual averages for 2019–2023, based on NHTSA data analyzed by Athey Creek Consultants. FHWA notes that NHTSA values can be revised. The estimates are 744,911 weather-related crashes, 268,239 people injured in those crashes, and 3,807 people killed per year. FHWA defines the relevant context around adverse atmospheric weather conditions. FHWA Road Weather Management

Those figures establish that adverse weather is a serious road-safety concern. They do not show that Android Auto’s interface causes crashes, that adding more weather information would prevent them, or that a particular dashboard design would improve safety. No Android Auto-specific study or controlled usability result establishes those product effects.

The raccoon is a teaser, not a weather solution

Walker’s article describes a raccoon character called “Jimothy, the viral raccoon,” found in an APK teardown. At the time of his Oct. 2, 2026 article, the animation was not live. It remains an unreleased possibility: Google could abandon it or make it public, and no confirmed launch schedule is established. A playful character might add personality, but it does not by itself solve the practical question of how weather can be presented alongside navigation. Android Authority, Oct. 2, 2026
