Android Auto vs. Apple CarPlay: Compatibility and Features Compared

Android Auto is for compatible Android phones; CarPlay is for compatible iPhones. Your car or stereo must support the system, and wireless connections have extra requirements.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Android Auto works with compatible Android phones, while Apple CarPlay works with compatible iPhones. To know which you can use, check both your phone and your exact car or stereo: a USB port alone does not mean the vehicle supports either system. Wireless use has additional requirements, and the available official documentation does not establish a universal winner or exact feature parity.

Android Auto vs. CarPlay at a glance

What to compare Android Auto Apple CarPlay
Phone ecosystem Compatible Android phone. Google lists Android 9.0 or later for wired display use, along with an active data plan. Compatible iPhone running current iOS. An iPad or iPod touch does not support CarPlay.
Vehicle support Requires a compatible car or stereo; some compatible aftermarket units can provide support. Requires a CarPlay-compatible car. Check vehicle and country or region support.
Wired connection Requires a compatible car and a quality USB cable. Available in vehicles that support USB-connected CarPlay.
Wireless connection Requires a compatible phone and vehicle or stereo, an active data plan, and 5 GHz Wi-Fi support. Google’s listed Android versions vary by phone maker. Available in vehicles that support wireless CarPlay; setup uses the vehicle’s pairing mode and iPhone settings.
Documented functions Google describes navigation, maps, calls, texts, music, compatible apps, live traffic, lane guidance, and voice interaction. Apple’s cited connection and troubleshooting pages explain how to connect and use CarPlay, but do not provide a complete like-for-like feature inventory for this comparison.

Check compatibility before choosing

Start with the phone

Android Auto is for compatible Android phones; CarPlay is for iPhones. Google’s wired Android Auto requirements include Android 9.0 or later and an active data plan. CarPlay requires a compatible iPhone with current iOS. Update the phone and check the current requirements before relying on an older device.

Check the exact car or stereo

Compatibility can depend on the vehicle, model year, trim, and installed stereo. Consult the automaker’s compatibility information and owner’s manual rather than assuming that a USB socket supports phone projection. Google explicitly notes that USB alone does not establish Android Auto compatibility, and it recognizes compatible aftermarket head units as an option. Apple likewise advises checking that the car supports CarPlay and confirming country or region availability. Google’s guidance is available in Android Auto troubleshooting and compatibility information; Apple’s connection guidance is in How to connect your iPhone to your car.

Wired and wireless connections have different requirements

Wired Android Auto

Google’s listed requirements are a compatible car, an Android phone running Android 9.0 or later, an active data plan, and a quality USB cable. Android Auto is integrated into phones for car-display use, so Google says a separate app download is not required. Follow Google’s Android Auto setup steps and use a cable suited to your phone connector and the vehicle port.

Wireless Android Auto

Wireless use additionally requires a compatible phone and car or stereo, an active data plan, and 5 GHz Wi-Fi support. Google’s current requirements page lists Android 11 or later generally; Google or Samsung phones on Android 10; and specified Samsung Galaxy S8, S8+, or Note 8 devices on Android 9. These are Google’s requirements, not a guarantee that every phone meeting the version threshold works with every vehicle. Regional regulations can also affect 5 GHz Wi-Fi use. See Google’s Android Auto requirements and feature overview for current details.

Wired or wireless CarPlay

CarPlay can connect by USB or wirelessly, depending on the car. For wireless setup, use the vehicle’s pairing mode and follow the iPhone prompts. Apple’s guidance asks users to check the car manual and software as well as the vehicle and region support; see Apple’s CarPlay connection instructions.

Navigation

Google documents maps and navigation features for Android Auto, including live traffic and lane guidance. It also describes turn-by-turn navigation and notes that some electric-vehicle range estimates depend on setup. See Google’s turn-by-turn navigation guide for details.

Calls, messages, media, and apps

Google describes Android Auto as bringing compatible apps to the car display, including functions for calls, texts, and music. Which apps are available can vary; Google’s Android Auto app guidance explains supported app categories and availability. Apple’s connection pages establish how CarPlay connects an iPhone to a supported display, but do not set out an equivalent complete feature inventory. Do not assume every app or feature is available on both systems: check the apps you rely on and their support for your phone and car.

Controls and voice interaction

Google’s Android Auto feature overview includes voice interaction. For either system, compare the controls and voice functions available in your specific vehicle and the tasks you need to handle; the cited setup documentation does not establish identical controls or one-to-one feature parity.

Choose based on your own setup

  • Use the phone you already own: Android Auto requires Android; CarPlay requires an iPhone. Neither is a phone-independent alternative.
  • Verify the exact vehicle: confirm support for the car’s model year, trim, and stereo before buying a cable or aftermarket unit.
  • Decide whether wireless matters: confirm support for the exact phone-and-car combination and its additional requirements. If you prefer wired use, verify that the vehicle supports wired projection.
  • Check your everyday apps: confirm support for your preferred navigation, media, and messaging apps rather than assuming feature parity.
  • Consider everyone who connects: if more than one driver uses the car, check which phones and connection modes the vehicle supports.

There is no universal winner established by the official setup documentation. The practical choice is the system compatible with your phone and vehicle that supports the apps and connection style you want.

Troubleshoot a connection that does not work

Android Auto

  • Confirm the car or stereo is listed as compatible; a USB port by itself is not enough.
  • For wired use, check that the phone meets Google’s requirements and try a quality USB cable.
  • For wireless use, verify phone and vehicle support, active data, and 5 GHz Wi-Fi capability.
  • For device-specific steps, consult Google’s Android Auto troubleshooting guidance.

CarPlay

  • For wireless CarPlay, make sure Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are on and Auto-Join is enabled for the CarPlay network.
  • For a wired connection problem, try a different USB cable and port, and check that the port supports CarPlay.
  • Confirm the car supports CarPlay and check its manual and software. Apple’s steps are in If you need help with CarPlay.

Set up either system while parked and follow local driving laws; Google specifically instructs users to complete Android Auto setup before driving.
