Android Automotive OS (AAOS) runs on the vehicle’s own hardware and powers its infotainment system. They are different layers, not competing names for the same feature—and a car can support both.
What is the practical difference?
| Question | Android Auto | Android Automotive OS |
|---|---|---|
| Where does it run? | On your Android phone; the experience appears on the compatible vehicle display. | Directly on the vehicle’s in-car hardware. |
| Does it need a phone connection? | Yes. The phone supplies the Android Auto experience, over USB or wirelessly when supported. | No phone connection is required to use the car’s built-in infotainment apps. The vehicle may separately support Android Auto. |
| How do apps reach the screen? | Compatible phone apps provide supported, driver-optimized experiences projected to the car display. | Supported apps can be installed in the car’s infotainment system. Cars with Google built-in include Google apps and services, but configurations vary. |
| What depends on the vehicle? | Whether the car or stereo supports Android Auto and whether it supports wired or wireless connections. | The automaker’s implementation, services, and supported apps. |
The Android Open Source Project describes Android Auto as software running on the user’s phone and projecting its experience to a compatible in-vehicle system. It describes Android Automotive as an operating system running directly on in-vehicle hardware. Android Open Source Project: What is Android Automotive?

Does Android Automotive need a phone?
No—not for its built-in infotainment apps. AAOS is part of the car’s system, so supported apps can run in the vehicle without connecting a phone for that purpose. In cars with Google built-in, apps can be installed from Google Play in the car. The exact services and available apps depend on the vehicle’s configuration; not every AAOS vehicle should be assumed to include the same Google services. Yes. A vehicle can run Android Automotive OS and also support Android Auto. AAOS describes the car’s built-in operating system; Android Auto describes a phone-based experience that may be projected to the display. Android Developers explicitly says the two are not exclusive. Check the feature list for the exact vehicle rather than inferring Android Auto support from the presence of AAOS. Android Developers: Android Automotive OS overview

What do you need to use Android Auto?
You need a compatible Android phone and a car or aftermarket stereo that supports Android Auto. Google’s general guidance says Android 9.0 or later is sufficient for most wired connections; wireless use requires Android 11.0 or later, with selected newer vehicles also supported. Android Developers separately describes Android Auto support for phones running Android 9 (API level 28) or later. These operating-system thresholds do not guarantee that a particular phone, vehicle, stereo, or connection combination is compatible, so confirm support for your exact setup. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does Android Auto require a USB cable?
No. Android Auto can connect by USB or wirelessly, but wireless support is not universal: both the phone and the car or supported aftermarket stereo must allow it. For most wired setups, Google recommends a high-quality USB cable. Check that its connector matches your phone and the vehicle or stereo port; a cable is only relevant to a wired connection.

Which one should you expect in a car?
- If you want to use compatible phone apps on the car display, look for Android Auto support and check whether your setup is wired, wireless, or both.
- If you want infotainment apps that run in the vehicle without a phone connection, check whether the car has Android Automotive OS and which services and apps the automaker includes.
- If you want both options, confirm that the specific vehicle supports both AAOS and Android Auto; one does not guarantee the other.
