For an older car without a compatible infotainment system, a phone mount is usually the simpler choice. Android Auto makes more sense if the car already supports it—or if you’re willing to install a compatible aftermarket stereo—and you want apps on the car’s display. A USB port alone does not mean the car supports Android Auto.
How the two options differ
| Consideration | Phone mount | Android Auto |
|---|---|---|
| Works without factory Android Auto | Yes. The phone and mount work independently of the car’s infotainment system. | No. The car needs compatible equipment or a compatible aftermarket stereo. Google’s compatibility guidance explains the requirement. |
| Setup | Position the mount and use the phone directly. | Requires compatible car equipment and setup between the phone and car. Google says to complete setup while parked. Google’s setup instructions |
| Where you see apps | On the phone screen. | On the car’s compatible display, connected by USB or wirelessly when supported. Google’s setup instructions |
| Adding it to an older car | No stereo retrofit is required. | A compatible aftermarket stereo is a possible retrofit; vehicle fit and installation requirements vary. |
| Best fit | Drivers who want a low-change way to use phone navigation and audio. | Drivers who want an integrated display experience and are prepared to verify or add compatible equipment. |
Choose a phone mount if simplicity matters most
A mount lets you use your phone for navigation and audio without relying on the car’s stereo supporting Android Auto. It is the straightforward route when you do not need a car-display interface or want to avoid a stereo retrofit.

Android Auto connects a compatible phone to a compatible in-car display. Google describes both USB and wireless setup, but wireless use requires compatibility in both the phone and the car system. For initial wireless pairing, Google uses Bluetooth and recommends keeping Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services enabled during setup. See Google’s setup instructions.

For an older car that lacks factory support, Google’s guidance identifies a compatible aftermarket unit as a route to Android Auto. Before buying, verify the exact vehicle and stereo fit, installation requirements, and whether factory controls you rely on will be retained. The available guidance does not establish installation prices, labor time, or which functions a particular installation will preserve.
Check compatibility before buying anything
- Identify the exact car configuration. Note the model year, trim, and installed stereo, not just the make and model.
- Check Google’s compatibility information and the vehicle maker’s details. Google’s compatibility page says Android Auto works with over 500 vehicle models and lists supported stereos; that published count is not a guarantee that a particular year, trim, or stereo is supported. Google’s compatibility page
- Do not use a USB port as proof. A car’s port may charge a phone or serve other functions without supporting Android Auto. Verify support for the exact car or stereo. Google’s troubleshooting guidance
- If using USB, connect to the vehicle’s USB port and follow the on-screen prompts. If setting up wirelessly, confirm that the phone and car system both support wireless Android Auto.
- Set up while parked. Google says to have the car in Park and the infotainment system on during setup. For wireless setup, keep Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services enabled as instructed. Google’s setup instructions
Can a wireless adapter add Android Auto to an older car?
A wireless Android Auto adapter is a possible convenience only when the stereo already supports wired Android Auto. It does not turn an incompatible stereo into an Android Auto system. Check the adapter maker’s support list for your exact stereo before buying; Google’s setup requirements still depend on compatible in-car equipment. Use either option without letting it distract you
Google instructs drivers to complete Android Auto setup while parked, pay attention to road and driving conditions, and obey applicable laws. A vehicle-manual excerpt hosted by NHTSA warns that distracted driving can lead to loss of vehicle control, serious injury, or death. Follow your owner’s manual and local rules, and choose a phone position that does not interfere with driving.
