Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteAndroid Auto is getting a noticeable visual upgrade: a recent Android Auto update adds full Material You color themes. If you’ve been keeping an eye on Android’s color system, this is the part where it finally shows up in your car’s interface instead of staying limited to the phone.
For drivers, the practical win is simple—your maps, media controls, and navigation surfaces can pick up the accent colors from your phone theme. The result is a UI that looks more cohesive and less “stock.” The catch is that rollout timing and device compatibility can vary, so you’ll want to verify the update and make sure theme sync is actually working.

What changed in the Android Auto update
The headline change is broader Material You adoption: Android Auto now uses your selected color scheme to style more of the UI instead of only applying limited accent colors. That typically means more surfaces and controls follow your system palette, including elements you’d normally expect to stay neutral.

Material You themes: what you should notice
After updating, pay attention to the accent color in places like media controls, the navigation bar, and highlighted UI states (for example, selected tabs or active cards). If your phone wallpaper changes the Material You palette, Android Auto should reflect those shifts more completely.

Where themes apply in the UI
While the exact coverage depends on the head unit and the Android Auto build, the typical pattern is: accent highlights adopt your Material You colors, and backgrounds/blocks use harmonized tones for a unified look. You’ll usually see the most obvious differences in screens where the UI has “brand” surfaces—media playback and the navigation moment you’re actively driving.
Requirements and compatibility
This feature doesn’t live in isolation. Material You color behavior depends on your Android version, your phone’s theme engine, and how your car screen renders Android Auto. Here’s what to check before you expect the full theme experience.
Phone requirements (Android versions and setup)
Material You is tied to Android’s theming system, so you need a phone that supports it (commonly Android 12 and newer). If your phone can’t generate a dynamic color palette from wallpaper, Android Auto has nothing rich to sync.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Android 12+ support: Required for full Material You palette behavior.
- Dynamic colors enabled: Your Material You setup must be using wallpaper-based colors.
- Android Auto version: You must be on a build that includes the updated theme rendering.
Car/Head unit requirements
Android Auto runs on your phone but is displayed on your vehicle’s head unit (or a connected aftermarket screen). Some head units and display profiles can lag behind in visual rollouts.
- Wired vs. wireless: Either can work; wireless sometimes takes slightly longer to refresh UI state after theme changes.
- Resolution and DPI: Some layouts may compress colors into fewer surfaces depending on screen characteristics.
- Brand differences: The UI theme can look “more complete” on certain car models than others.
App and system prerequisites
Even when Android Auto is updated, missing supporting components can prevent the newest UI behavior from appearing.
- Google Play services: Helps with device-side integration and UI rendering support.
- Android System WebView: Required for parts of the Android UI stack that render web-based surfaces.
- Android Auto permissions: Theme and UI updates can fail quietly if permissions are restricted by a work profile or battery saver.
How to update Android Auto
Rollouts aren’t always instant. The most reliable path is updating Android Auto directly, then confirming the build version and re-checking the UI in the car.
Update from Google Play
- On your phone, open Google Play.
- Search for Android Auto.
- Open the app page.
- If you see Update, tap it. If you see Open, you may already be current.
- After it finishes, unplug/replug your phone from the car (or reconnect for wireless) and check the UI again.
If you’re not seeing an update button, you may be waiting for staged rollout. In that case, keep the app installed and periodically check Play; staged releases often arrive over days or weeks.
Update on a managed phone (work profiles)
If your Android phone is managed by a company or school, app updates may be delayed or blocked by policy.

- Open Settings > Apps.
- Find Android Auto and confirm it’s installed in the active profile.
- Open Google Play and check whether Android Auto is allowed to update.
- If updates are restricted, ask your admin to allow Android Auto updates for that profile.
Confirm you’re on the new Android Auto build
To confirm you’re actually running the updated version, use the app’s version details.
- Open Android Auto on your phone.
- Go to its Settings (or menu) page.
- Look for About / Version info.
- Write down the version number and compare after another update check (if colors still don’t change).
Because version numbers differ by country and rollout stage, the best verification method is visual confirmation in the car plus your app version record.
How to turn Material You color themes on (and verify they work)
Android Auto doesn’t invent new palette values—it typically pulls a color scheme from your phone’s Material You settings. So if your phone theme is neutral or static, Android Auto will follow that.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteSet or change your phone wallpaper/theme
Material You palettes are most reliably driven by wallpaper. If you want a richer theme match in Android Auto, choose or generate a wallpaper that yields a strong color palette.
- Open Settings > Wallpaper (or Personalization on some devices).
- Choose a wallpaper that supports dynamic colors.
- Apply it and let the system generate the Material You palette.
- Wait a minute, then reconnect Android Auto in your car.
Check Android Auto theme syncing
Depending on your phone and Android Auto version, there may be a theme-related setting. If you can’t find it, the default behavior is usually automatic syncing from the phone.
- Open Android Auto on your phone.
- Go to Settings.
- Search for options like Theme, Colors, or Use device theme.
- Make sure it’s set to the device-driven option (if available).
Verify in the car: quick UI checklist
After reconnecting, use this short checklist to confirm the theme update is live:
- Media screen accents: Buttons and active states match your Material You accent.
- Navigation emphasis: Active route elements or highlights use the new palette.
- Consistent surfaces: You see fewer “neutral” gray surfaces where accents should appear.
- Theme changes after wallpaper: Changing wallpaper on the phone results in a visible palette shift in the car after reconnecting.
Troubleshooting when colors don’t change
If the Android Auto update is installed but the UI still looks the same, don’t assume the feature is missing. Theme sync can fail due to caching, connection state, or missing system components.
Restart the head unit and reconnect the phone
Theme rendering can get “stuck” on an older UI session.

- In the car, exit Android Auto (if the UI has a back/exit flow).
- Turn off the head unit.
- Wait 30–60 seconds.
- Start the car, then reconnect your phone (wired or wireless).
- Check the media and navigation screens again.
Clear Android Auto cache (without losing your settings)
Clearing cache can force Android Auto to re-render with the latest palette.
- Open Settings on your phone.
- Go to Apps > Android Auto.
- Tap Storage.
- Tap Clear cache.
- Reconnect Android Auto in the car and verify the theme.
Avoid Clear data unless you’re comfortable re-pairing and re-configuring. Cache clearing is the safer first step.
Update Google Play Services and Android System WebView
These components often gate UI behavior and rendering updates.
- Open Google Play.
- Search for Google Play services and update it.
- Search for Android System WebView and update it.
- Restart the phone.
- Reconnect Android Auto and re-check the palette.
Fix wallpaper/theme sync issues
If your phone clearly changes colors in the system UI but Android Auto stays stuck, the theme sync signal may not be triggering.
- Change your wallpaper (even briefly), then switch back.
- Wait 1–2 minutes on the phone.
- Fully disconnect Android Auto from the car and reconnect.
On some setups, a complete disconnect/reconnect cycle (not just switching screens) is what forces the new palette to propagate.
If you use a dark mode schedule or extra accessibility themes
Material You palettes interact with dark mode and readability options. If you schedule dark mode, Android Auto might render one scheme while you’re in a different lighting state.
- Check Settings > Display > Dark theme schedule.
- If you use Color correction or High contrast, verify whether your accessibility layer is forcing a fixed palette.
- Try manual dark/light toggles, then reconnect Android Auto to see if accents follow.
Common mistakes and gotchas
The biggest failures aren’t technical—they’re expectations. These are the patterns that most often cause “it didn’t change” reports.

Using an unsupported theme engine or third-party theming app
Material You’s dynamic palette comes from Android’s supported theming paths. Some third-party “theme” tools don’t integrate with the system palette API, so Android Auto can’t read them properly.
Multiple users or profiles on the same device
If your phone has work/personal profiles, Android Auto can run under one profile while your wallpaper/theme changes happen under another. Confirm which profile you’re using when you update the wallpaper and when you connect to the car.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What’s the best way to get a consistent theme while driving
You can reduce visual surprises by controlling palette volatility and contrast.
Choose a wallpaper with strong contrast
Material You generates accent colors based on your wallpaper. Wallpapers with a clear dominant hue typically produce more noticeable, stable accents in Android Auto.
Prefer a stable wallpaper and avoid rapid theme cycling
Frequent wallpaper changes can create a mismatch between what your phone shows and what your active Android Auto session is rendering. If you care about consistency, pick one wallpaper and keep it for a while.
Plan for lighting: dark vs. light UI
Most drivers care more about readability than aesthetic matching. If you notice low contrast, switch your phone’s dark theme setting or let it follow the system schedule, then reconnect Android Auto to apply the matching UI variant.
Alternative ways to customize the look
Full Material You theming is the main event, but you can still tune how the display feels.

Use Android Auto’s in-app settings (where available)

Adjust car display brightness and contrast
Many vehicles have their own “Day/Night” display modes. Even with perfect Material You colors, poor display settings can make accents look muted or harsh.
Use Android’s Display settings for readability
If the color theme isn’t the problem but readability is, adjust font size and display size on your phone and then re-check Android Auto. Some readability changes alter how UI surfaces and highlights are rendered.
FAQs
Does the Android Auto update add Material You themes to all cars?
No. Rollouts and UI rendering can vary by head unit and display profile. If your Android Auto version is updated and your phone has Material You enabled, you should usually see improved accents, but full coverage may differ.
Recommended Free Tools
Will my Android Auto theme change automatically when I change my phone wallpaper?
Often yes, but not always instantly during an active session. If you don’t see the change, reconnect Android Auto or restart the head unit.
Why do I only see accent colors change, but not the rest of the UI?
That can happen if your head unit limits theme surfaces or if your Android Auto build hasn’t fully rolled out. It can also occur when your phone’s Material You palette is generated from a wallpaper with limited dominant color.
What if I updated Android Auto but the colors still look the same?
Try a cache clear for Android Auto, update Google Play services and Android System WebView, then reconnect. If you’re on a work-managed device, confirm the app is updating in the active profile.
Does wired vs. wireless affect the theme?
It can affect timing. Wireless sessions sometimes cache UI state longer. If colors aren’t updating, try a wired connection or do a full disconnect/reconnect cycle.
Bottom Line
The Android Auto update that adds full Material You color themes is the kind of change you notice immediately once you compare a before/after session. When it’s working correctly, your car’s interface looks more like an extension of your phone instead of a separate, neutral shell.
If the new colors don’t appear right away, focus on verification: update Android Auto via Google Play, confirm Android 12+ Material You is enabled on your phone, then reconnect and clear cache if needed. With those steps, most drivers should get the refreshed theme experience without guesswork.
