Android Auto Settings Worth Checking—and How to Fix Common Connection Problems

Android Auto settings are on your phone. Learn how to customize the launcher, adjust accessibility and message options, and check cables, pairing, and car compatibility when a connection fails.

Android Auto’s useful settings live on your phone, not just in your car’s infotainment menus. You can use them to declutter the car launcher, keep navigation and media controls visible, improve text legibility, and find dismissed messages. If Android Auto will not connect, though, a hidden toggle may not be the cause: compatibility, a USB cable, or the car’s settings can matter more.

Where to find Android Auto settings on your phone

On many phones, open Settings > Connected devices > Connection preferences > Android Auto. If those labels or menus are different, search the Settings app for Android Auto. Phone manufacturers and Android versions can organize settings differently. Google documents both routes in its Android Auto developer guidance.

Make the car launcher easier to use

Hide apps and change their order

Open Customize launcher in Android Auto settings. Hide apps or options you do not want in the car launcher, and drag app names to put frequently used choices where you prefer them. Google says the changes appear in the car after Android Auto exits and restarts; if they are not visible right away, close and reopen Android Auto.

Keep navigation and media controls in view

If a full-screen app takes over the display and you want to keep key controls available, enable Show quick controls for apps in Android Auto settings. Google says this setting keeps media controls and navigation directions available while a full-screen app is open. See Google’s Android Auto display and app settings help.

  • Important Compatibility Check - PLEASE READ: This adapter is ONLY compatible with cars equipped with Factory Wired CarPlay or Android Auto (Model Years 2016-2025). ❌ NOT compatible with BMW, Tesla, or vehicles without a wired system. For Android Users: Requires a phone running Android 11 or later with "Wireless Android Auto" enabled. Includes USB-A to USB-C adapter for wider port compatibility.

Adjust display and accessibility options

Android Auto includes display options such as a dark theme, bold text, outlined text, and a phone setting to remove animations. Bold or outlined text may make labels easier to distinguish, while removing animations reduces movement; which options help depends on the person and the display. A dark theme is available, but it is not a guarantee of improved night vision.

Voice commands can be used for calls, messages, directions, and media. Some actions are restricted while driving, and the phone keyboard for entering text on the car display is available when parked. Set up and adjust these options before setting off, and keep your attention on the road. Google describes these features in its Android Auto accessibility guidance.

Listen to messages or find ones you dismissed

Android Auto can show message notifications and play messages aloud. To hear a message, use the voice assistant or select Play aloud when that option is available. A dismissed or missed message may still be available from Android Auto’s tiles or notification center. Use voice and other permitted interactions rather than reading or responding in a way that distracts you from driving. See Google’s messaging help for Android Auto.

Cars with Google built-in are a separate case: their message-notification behavior and requirements are not a universal Android Auto setting path. Google says reading or responding to notifications in those cars may require Bluetooth pairing and notification access for Gemini or Google Assistant; available functions can vary by vehicle manufacturer, region, and data plan. Details are in Google’s messaging guidance for cars with Google built-in.

Wired or wireless: check the requirements for your connection

Neither connection method is right for every car and phone. Compatibility is specific to the vehicle or stereo and phone, so check that both support the mode you are trying to use. Google’s Android Auto setup guide lists Android 9.0 or later and an active data plan for wired use. Wireless use requires a compatible phone and car or stereo, active data, and 5 GHz Wi-Fi support on the phone.

Connection What to check Common point of failure
Wired A compatible phone and car or stereo, plus a USB cable that supports data. A cable that is damaged, unsuitable, too long, or unable to carry data; Android Auto may also be disabled in the car’s system.
Wireless Compatible phone and car or stereo, active data, and 5 GHz Wi-Fi support on the phone. Pair over Bluetooth for first-time setup, keeping Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services on. Unsupported phone or vehicle hardware, or incomplete initial Bluetooth pairing.

Complete wireless setup while parked, before driving. Google’s connection setup instructions cover the requirements; exact compatibility depends on the car, stereo, and phone.

“My Android Auto app isn’t working”: troubleshoot the connection

  1. Check compatibility first. Confirm that your phone, car, and the wired or wireless mode you want to use are supported. A setting cannot make unsupported hardware compatible.
  2. For a first wireless connection, pair over Bluetooth. Keep Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services on during setup, and complete the process while parked.
  3. For a wired connection, test a short, quality data cable. Google recommends a high-quality USB cable shorter than 1 metre (3 feet), advises against hubs and extensions, and suggests trying the phone maker’s cable. If a wired connection worked before and has stopped, Google says replacing the cable is likely to fix it. Make sure the replacement supports data transfer and fits both the phone and car. These are Google’s recommendations in its Android Auto connection troubleshooting guide.
  4. Check the car’s infotainment system. Confirm Android Auto is enabled in its settings, then restart the infotainment system. If you use an aftermarket receiver, check with its maker about firmware.
  5. If you are trying another car, remove old car connections and retry. Google includes removing previously connected cars among its troubleshooting steps.
  6. Ask the vehicle or receiver maker if the problem persists. Compatibility and menu locations vary by model, and the manufacturer can confirm what its system supports.

“I can’t find the Android Auto app on my phone”

You do not need to rely on a separate app icon to reach these controls: search for Android Auto in the phone’s Settings app. If the search returns no result, check the phone maker’s instructions for its Android version, since menu organization and availability can vary.
