Android Auto Settings: Which Phone Features to Turn Off, and Which to Leave On

Disabling phone features isn't a documented Android Auto fix. Here's what Google says to keep on, which permissions matter, and what to check by connection type.

There is no published evidence that switching off a batch of phone features makes Android Auto generally better. Google’s documentation points the other way for setup: Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Location Services should stay on. Only a few settings have a documented effect, and which ones matter depends on whether you connect by cable or wirelessly. This guide sorts them by symptom.

Start with your connection type

Most “Android Auto is flaky” advice mixes two separate setups. Work out which you have before touching any setting. The requirements below are Google’s published ones as of 5 October 2026. Confirm phone, car and regional compatibility with your phone and vehicle manufacturers.

Wired Wireless
Phone Compatible phone; Google’s getting-started page specifies Android 9.0 or higher Compatible phone; Google says wireless projection is compatible with phones running Android 11.0
Car Compatible car or stereo Compatible car or stereo that supports wireless Android Auto
Link High-quality USB cable Bluetooth for first-time pairing, then 5 GHz Wi-Fi support
Other Mobile data coverage Active data plan

Android Auto is built into phones, so you generally don’t install a separate app to use it on the car display.

Settings to leave on during setup

Google’s setup page says: “For best results, keep your phone’s Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services turned on while you complete the setup.” Bluetooth pairs the phone and car, and wireless projection then depends on Wi-Fi. Turning these off to “streamline” a wireless setup works against the documented process. After setup is complete, Google’s page doesn’t say whether you can switch them off. For wireless use, the 5 GHz Wi-Fi requirement means Wi-Fi must be available.

Permissions: restrict with care

Google says Google Play services device connections supports Android Auto and may use certain permissions:

  • Location: navigation.
  • Contacts: contacts while connected.
  • SMS: messaging.
  • Microphone: calls.

Google words these as “may be used”, so not every feature needs every permission. The practical rule is that denying one can disable the matching feature. If you never message or call from the car screen, you may reasonably withhold that permission. Treat it as a privacy choice rather than a performance fix, because nothing in Google’s pages says it improves connection quality.

If an app vanishes from the launcher (Samsung)

Google documents one specific battery-related behavior. Samsung phones may temporarily disable apps you haven’t used in a while, and those apps then don’t appear in the Android Auto launcher.

  1. Open the missing app on the phone itself. That can restore it to the launcher.
  2. To stop it recurring, open the phone’s battery settings and look for an option labeled “Auto disable unused apps” or “Put unused apps to sleep”. Turn it off, or exempt the app. Labels vary by software version.

This explains missing apps. Google’s page doesn’t say it causes connection failures, so don’t expect it to fix a phone that won’t connect.

If wired Android Auto won’t connect

Disabling phone features isn’t Google’s first suggestion. Its troubleshooting steps focus on hardware and the car:

  • Use a high-quality USB cable. Check that it fits your phone’s connector and carries data, not just charge. Swap it before anything else.
  • Confirm your car is compatible and that Android Auto is enabled in the infotainment system.
  • Restart the infotainment system.
  • For an aftermarket receiver, check for firmware updates.
  • If you’re connecting to a second car, forget previously connected cars and try again.

A cable is irrelevant to a wireless fault. For wireless problems, start with whether the phone and car both support wireless Android Auto, then re-pair over Bluetooth with Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Location on.

What isn’t established

Google’s pages don’t quantify how often any setting causes failures. They also don’t show that disabling battery, permission or other features improves Android Auto in general. If someone reports a dramatic improvement after turning something off, it may be real for their phone and car. It could equally come from the cable swap, restart or re-pair done at the same time. Change one thing at a time and note the result.
