Android Auto Settings to Check for a More Reliable Connection

Start with the right checks for your connection mode: verify compatibility, keep wireless setup radios on, use a short direct USB cable, and confirm Android Auto is enabled in the car.

For a more reliable Android Auto connection, first confirm that your phone and car support the connection mode you’re using. For wireless setup, keep Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services on while pairing. For a wired connection, use a high-quality USB data cable shorter than one metre, plugged directly into the car—without a hub or extension. Then check that Android Auto is enabled in the car’s infotainment system.

Check compatibility before changing settings

A USB port does not by itself mean a car supports Android Auto. Your phone and the car or stereo must both support the connection mode you want to use. Google’s requirements for Android Auto list Android 9.0 (Pie) or later and an active data plan for wired use, along with a compatible car and high-quality USB cable. Android (Go edition) devices are not supported.

Wireless projection has separate requirements: a compatible Android phone with an active data plan and 5 GHz Wi-Fi support, plus a compatible car or stereo. Google recommends asking the phone manufacturer about 5 GHz support and the vehicle maker about compatibility with a particular car or stereo.

Android Auto is integrated into compatible phones for car-display use, so you do not need to download a separate Android Auto app. If you are unsure whether your vehicle supports wired or wireless Android Auto, confirm with its manufacturer.

Set up wireless Android Auto with the right radios on

  1. Park the car and turn on its infotainment system.
  2. Make sure the car or stereo supports wireless Android Auto and that your phone meets the applicable requirements.
  3. Turn on Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services on your phone. Google Android Auto Help advises: “For best results, keep your phone’s Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services turned on while you complete the setup.”
  4. Complete the first connection by pairing the phone and car via Bluetooth, following the vehicle’s on-screen instructions.

If wireless setup still fails, revisit compatibility and the vehicle’s setup instructions rather than assuming an unrelated phone setting will fix it. Google’s Android Auto setup guidance covers the connection process; the vehicle manufacturer can confirm model-specific steps.

For a wired connection, check the cable and port

  1. Confirm that both the phone and car or stereo support wired Android Auto.
  2. Connect the phone directly to the car’s USB port with a high-quality USB data cable. Trying the cable supplied with the phone is a sensible first check.
  3. If the connection is unreliable, try a cable shorter than one metre. Remove any USB hub or extension from the connection.
  4. If a cable that previously worked has stopped connecting, try replacing it.

Google’s cable-length and hub guidance is troubleshooting advice, not a quantified reliability test. It does not establish that a particular cable brand or specification will improve connection reliability.

With an aftermarket receiver, check the receiver manufacturer’s support site for firmware updates and model-specific instructions.
